Louisville signs former Packers VP Andrew Brandt as advisor for athletic department
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville has signed Andrew Brandt, a former vice president of the NFL's Green Bay Packers, to be an advisor as the Cardinals' athletic department manages college sports' changing landscape, including revenue sharing and name, image and likeness pay. The Cardinals announced the move Thursday. Brandt currently is the executive director of the Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law at Villanova University and has written for Sports Illustrated and has a podcast on The Business of Sports. Brandt also has been an agent representing NFL and NBA athletes. Louisville first reached out to Brandt last year. Athletic director Josh Heird said they want to position Louisville to lead and not follow as college athletics evolves into more of a professional model. Heird also worked with Brandt previously at Villanova. 'Andrew is one of the most respected minds in sports business and law,' Heird said. 'His insights give us a real strategic advantage as we navigate this transformative period.' Brandt will be advising Louisville on everything from contracts with athletes to negotiations with player representatives. He called this a 'transformational time' in college sports. 'Louisville isn't just preparing for the future — they're shaping it,' Brandt said. ___ AP sports:

UCLA Makes Surprising Quarterback Move on Wednesday
The UCLA Bruins struggled in their first year in the Big Ten, going just 5-7, marking their first losing season since 2020 and 3-6 in conference matchups. However, they've had a very busy offseason, led by head coach DeShaun Foster, where they have brought in a total of 20 players from the transfer portal, for a class that ranks No. 11 in the nation, per On3. Advertisement Of course, the biggest of that group is quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who spent last season with the Tennessee Volunteers and was ranked as the second-best player to hit the portal this cycle. However, they made another interesting move on Wednesday, flipping Ole Miss transfer quarterback Pierce Clarkson, who has been with the Louisville Cardinals the past two seasons. Coming out of high school in the class of 2023, On3 Industry Rankings placed Clarkson as a four-star recruit, the No. 26 quarterback and the No. 395 player in the nation. However, his time with the Cardinals has been extremely lackluster, appearing in three games and completing 4-of-6 passes for 18 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Advertisement Clarkson is also the third quarterback UCLA has added through the portal that will be with the team next season, which of course includes Nico, and his younger brother, Madden Iamaleava, who will be a true freshman. Louisville Cardinals quarterback Pierce Clarkson (10).Jordan Prather-Imagn Images With Nico undoubtedly getting ready to be the starter in 2025, it's hard to imagine that Clarkson transferred in with the idea that he would see much time on the field, so he will have to wait at least a year on the bench. That means that he's not only banking on Nico entering next year's NFL draft but also on his ability to beat Madden in a positional battle for the starting role in 2026. Derek Carr retires: Aaron Rodgers to Saints, or Tyler Shough gets a promotion? Big hint here
With Derek Carr retiring, the New Orleans Saints have an important choice to make - go shopping for a top-tier quarterback or promote rookie Tyler Shough to fill the big shoes. It looks like Kellen Moore and co have decided to go with the latter. Carr suffered a shoulder injury after 10 games last season. The 34-year-old reportedly took injections and even underwent rehabilitation, but there were no signs of full recovery ahead of the 2025 season. The Saints knew his status and decided to back Tyler Shough, drafting the former Louisville Cardinals quarterback in the second round. Two-time Super Bowl champion Deion Branch told the team's fans to be excited about Shough, just hours before Derek Carr made the big announcement. 'Tyler's all that. I promise you. I want to be the person to quieten down all the grumblings that I have, probably, slightly heard. About 'Oh, we didn't take the right quarterback.' No, you took the right quarterback, trust me, I promise you," Branch said. Rookie minicamp began on Thursday, and Nick Underhill reported Kelvin Banks, Danny Stutsman, Quincy Riley, Devin Neal, Moliki Matavao, and Fadil Diggs have signed contracts. Three draft picks who were pending are Shough, Vernon Broughton, and Jonas Sanker. Rodgers, who is a free agent after being released by the New York Jets, has been strongly linked to the Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers. The 41-year-old, however, is yet to make a clear choice. With Carr retiring and the Steelers trading star WR George Pickens, New Orleans could become an attractive landing spot for the four-time NFL MVP.
