Two men charged with murder after boy killed in car crash

A father and son have been charged with murder after a four-year-old boy died in a crash in Dartford. Peter Maughan was taken to hospital with his father, Lovell, 24, and one-year-old sister after two pick-up trucks collided in New Barn Road at 9.30pm on Sunday. Patrick Maughan, 53 and Owen Maughan, 27, both from Darenth in Dartford were arrested on Monday and subsequently charged with murder. Tributes have been paid online to the child who was affectionately known as Peter Rabbit. Hundreds of comments were left by friends and family who offered their thoughts and prayers to those who survived and remain in hospital. Kent Police said Lovell Maughan was in 'critical condition', while his daughter had received only 'minor injuries'. Patrick and Owen Maughan have also been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted wounding with intent after the collision between the two grey Ford Rangers. The attempted wounding with intent applies to Annarica Maughan, Peter's sister, and Hayley Maughan, who is the children's mother. It is understood that Hayley Maughan is the first cousin of Owen Maughan. Patrick and Owen Maughan appeared at Sevenoaks magistrates' court on Wednesday. The two suspects were dealt with in short, separate hearings, speaking only to confirm their identities. They were remanded in custody and will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court, either on Thursday or Friday. A provisional plea and trial preparation hearing date of July 2 was also set.
