UAE a Global Aviation Leader in Low-Carbon Fuel Development, Says IATA

The UAE has been hailed as a 'global role model' for aviation development by Kamil Al-Awadhi, Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). On the sidelines of the IATA World Cargo Symposium 2025 in Dubai, Al-Awadhi praised the UAE's rapid progress, world-class infrastructure, and highly efficient operations. He highlighted the country's fully integrated aviation ecosystem—including airlines, airports, ground services, safety, and security—as an example even developed nations look to. He also noted the UAE's smooth visa procedures and exceptional passenger services as key strengths. Crucially, Al-Awadhi pointed to the UAE's leadership in sustainable aviation, particularly in the development of Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF). Unlike Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), LCAF is derived from conventional sources but emits significantly less carbon. 'The UAE is a leader in the development of LCAF,' he said, adding that the fuel remains under study and development. Looking ahead, IATA forecasts air traffic growth in the Gulf and Middle East to hit 9% in 2025—well above the global average of 5.6%. UAE airlines, backed by modern infrastructure and ambitious growth plans, are expected to grow even faster across both passenger and cargo operations. With its strategic focus on efficiency, innovation, and sustainability, the UAE continues to set the pace for the global aviation industry. News Source: Emirates News Agency

UAE leader in development of low carbon aviation fuel: IATA

Kamil Al-Awadhi, Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East at International Air Transport Association (IATA), described the UAE as a "global role model" for aviation development, pointing to the speed of progress, quality of infrastructure, and efficient operations in the country. In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the IATA World Cargo Symposium 2025 in Dubai, Kamil Al-Awadhi praised the UAE for its outstanding achievements in the aviation sector. He noted that the country has established itself as a role model—even for developed nations—due to its integrated and well-coordinated aviation ecosystem. He highlighted that this system includes airlines, airports, ground services, security, and safety, all functioning at high levels of efficiency. Additionally, he pointed to the UAE's streamlined visa procedures and the exceptional treatment of passengers at its airports, which reflect the nation's commitment to quality and world-class service standards. He confirmed that the UAE is taking a leading role on the global stage in developing Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF), which, unlike Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), is derived from conventional sources but has lower carbon emissions. It remains under study and development. ''The UAE is a leader in the development of LCAF,'' he noted. On IATA's forecast for air traffic in 2025, he said that IATA expects air traffic growth in the Gulf and Middle East to reach approximately 9%, which is higher than the expected global rate of around 5.6%. He emphasised that UAE airlines in particular will be among the fastest growing, and may even exceed this rate, due to their modern infrastructure and ambitious expansion strategies. He noted that this growth includes both passenger and air cargo traffic. Copyright 2024 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

IATA: Aviation sector contributes $92 billion to UAE economy

A new study from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed that aviation and related tourism contributed $92 billion (AED 337.9 billion) to the UAE's economy in 2023, making up 18.2 per cent of the country's GDP. The sector also supported over 992,000 jobs, with 74,500 employed directly by airlines and hundreds of thousands more working in aviation services and tourism. IATA praised the UAE's strategic vision and investment in world-class infrastructure, calling the country a 'critical hub for global connectivity.' One million tonnes of air cargo were handled in 2023 alone. Looking ahead, the UAE is well-placed to progress in three priority areas: Sustainability: The UAE has been a leader in the development of Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF) and is targeting an annual production of 700 million litres of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030. IATA looks forward to the potential for even broader collaboration with the UAE to advance progress towards aviation's net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Infrastructure: As the UAE continues to invest in world class-infrastructure to meet future demand, particularly with the development of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) and Zayed International Airport (AUH), it is critical to work with industry to remain a cost competitive hub for airlines and passengers. Workforce: Maintaining a sustainable pipeline of aviation professionals will further strengthen the UAE's status as a global aviation hub. As part of this effort, a new IATA training centre was recently opened in Abu Dhabi.
