Woman charged with cheating duo of RM16,000 over fake travel packages
JOHOR BARU: A 59-year-old woman has been charged at the Magistrate's Court here with two counts of deception where she received close to RM16,000 from selling fake travel packages. Low Siew Hwa was brought before Magistrate Atifah Hazimah Wahab on Friday (May 16), where she pleaded not guilty to deceiving a 52-year-old woman in Taman Setia Indah to hand over RM14,396 for the holiday packages between Nov 22 and Dec 12, 2024. The offence was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of one to 10 years, caning and a fine if convicted. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Azman offered bail at RM10,000 with one surety. The accused asked for a lower amount, saying that she earns RM5,000 a month and has to take care of three children. The court allowed bail at RM6,000 with one surety and set June 17 for next mention. In a separate court, Low pleaded not guilty to deceiving a 58-old woman and convincing her to pay RM1,588 for a fake travel package to China in Taman Bukit Indah at 6.02pm on March 12. DPP Nur Fatihah Mohd Nizam offered bail at RM10,000 with one surety. Low asked for a lower bail, saying that she already has to pay bail of RM5,000 from the earlier charge. Magistrate A. Shaarmini allowed bail at RM5,000 with one surety and told the accused to hire a lawyer before the next mention set for May 29.

Two women wanted for running cheap China travel package scam
JOHOR BARU: Police are looking for two women linked to an alleged scam involving cheap travel packages to China. Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the two women, Low Siew Hwa of Taman Nusajaya Mas, and Lim Zhi Xuan of Bukit Indah, were wanted for allegedly collecting payments from customers but failed to fulfil their end of the bargain. 'We have received a total of 34 reports against them, involving a value of RM338,080 so far. 'The victims had purchased the travel packages to China and felt they were scammed after the tour operators could no longer be contacted after that," he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 6). He added that police are searching for the two women to assist in investigations. He said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of one to 10 years, caning and a fine for cheating. Those with information about the suspects' whereabouts can head to the nearest police station or call the state police hotline at 07-2212999.
