Bay Area car sales surge before Trump tariffs go into effect

BURLINGAME, Calif. (KRON) — More tariffs are set to go into effect on Wednesday. President Trump plans to implement a 25 percent tariff on cars and auto parts coming from other countries, sending car sales soaring across the country and in the Bay Area. A sales rep at Ocean Honda of Burlingame says the dealership has been very busy since the weekend. In fact, their sales have tripled compared to this time last year. This car model continues dominance in CA sales for third straight year Not many customers were around as Ocean Honda of Burlingame was getting ready to close Tuesday night. However, earlier in the day, salesman Niko Loza says the dealership was packed with around 60 customers. 'I've never seen a day like this last Sunday…. never ever,' Loza said. 'All of our cubicles were all filled up; we even had some customers walking in the back alone by themselves. This whole sales room was full, and we were doing our best to focus who to put our attention on.' A record for the dealership — it sold 16 cars on Sunday and four on Tuesday. 'We're right next to downtown, so we get a lot of walk-ins, but this last Sunday felt like Presidents Day, Memorial Day… all combined,' Loza said with a chuckle. Three of 'best neighborhoods to live' in US are in this Peninsula city On average, that dealership sells 110 cars a month. But Loza and his colleagues estimate sales will hit 140 cars this month. It's because buyers are trying to grab a car hot off the lot — before the new 25 percent tariff on imported cars kicks in. Joseline Lopez picked up her new Honda at the Burlingame dealership. She says that once she learned about the tariff, she jumped on the best deal to get a new car. 'So I was like….. 'Oh! I'm lucky!' Because I know I think it was going to go up like 25 percent, so I thank god I got it at the right time and at the right moment,' Lopez said. The manager at Ocean Honda of Burlingame says it's not just their spot that has seen an influx in sales. However, they are worried about sales dropping once the new tariffs take effect.
