The 77th Edinburgh Taxi Outing sets off
The 77th Edinburgh Taxi Outing is taking place on Tuesday. The outing is organised and paid for by the taxi drivers themselves and offers a fun day out for children with additional needs, life-limiting conditions and terminal illnesses. The taxis are all decorated with balloons or as floats and assembled this morning at the car park at Edinburgh Zoo for judging and presentation of prizes. The procession of cabs then left the car park under Police escort to make its way through the city and along the coast to Archerfield Walled Garden (between Gullane and Dirleton, East Lothian) with a stop outside Luca's in Musselburgh to refill the water tanks and to eat as much ice cream as possible. Taxi outing celebrates 77th year with water guns and plenty of ice cream
The popular Edinburgh Taxi Outing has taken place for its 77th year, providing a fun day out for children with additional needs, life-limiting conditions and terminal illnesses. Setting off from Edinburgh Zoo on Tuesday, children were taken by dressed up drivers in a convoy of police-escorted taxis, decorated with balloons or as floats through the city and out to Archerfield Walled Garden where they stopped for a picnic. The parade will stop outside Luca's to allow for the refilling of water tanks and for families to to fill up on ice cream. In keeping with tradition, the cabs were decorated with balloons and colourful figures. The taxi outing, which is free of charge for the families involved, began in the wake of the Second World War in 1947 and has continued ever since. This taxi was one of several football-themed cars in the parade last year. History Thousands of children have enjoyed a fun day out on the Edinburgh Taxi Outing over the years, armed with water pistols as they are driven down the coast for a day they will never forget. The first event took place in 1948, organised by the Edinburgh Licensed Hackney Carriage Association, with 20 cabs taking 40 children on a day out to the beach at Gullane. The destination was changed to Yellowcraigs in the 1970s, with the event growing to 100 cabs taking 250 children and helpers by then. The annual fun event has been delighting local kids for years, here in 1979, with the first event held in 1948. | TSPL Weather The sun is currently forecast to shine down on this year's Edinburgh Taxi Outing. The Met Office says that Edinburgh will enjoy sunny intervals when the outing sets off at 10am, when the temperature will be 14C, but feel more like 11C due to winds of 14mph and gusts of up to 28mph. Sunshine is then expected from 11am for the rest of the day, with the temperature rising to 15C feels 12C by noon. As the outing heads from Musselburgh down the coast, the weather there is still expected to be sunny in Gullane at 1pm, and 17C, feels 13C. While the children are at Archerfiled, sunny intervals are currently forecast by the Met Office from 2pm until 4pm, with the temperature rising slightly from 17C to 18C.

The outing is organised and funded by taxi drivers and offers a day out for children who have additional needs, life-limiting conditions and terminal illnesses. The taxis are decorated with balloons or created as floats. Taxis assemble at the car park at Edinburgh Zoo where judging takes place and the Rt Hon Lord Provost of Edinburgh hands out the prizes. There are categories for best float taxi, best balloon taxi, best fancy dressed driver and best fancy dressed child. Keith Bell Secretary Edinburgh Taxi Trade Children's Outing Committee explained: 'We then leave Edinburgh Zoo Car Park at 10am heading under Police escort through the city and along the coast to Archerfield Walled Garden (between Gullane and Dirleton, East Lothian) with a stop outside Luca's in Musselburgh to refill the water tanks and to eat as much ice cream as possible. 'Once we reach Archerfield it's a fun-filled afternoon before heading home about 4pm.' Every year taxi drivers across the city decorate their cabs with colourful balloons and form a huge convoy to travel through the city and East Lothian for children with additional needs, life-limiting conditions and terminal illnesses. Thousands take to the streets to watch on as taxis decorated as floats or with bright colours assemble and travel from Edinburgh Zoo all the way through Musselburgh, Prestonpans and finish at Archerfield Walled Garden in Dirleton in the afternoon. The event also encourages those attending to come armed with water pistols and judges will also be awarding prizes for the best float taxi, best balloon taxi, best fancy dressed driver and best fancy dressed child. The convoy then stops outside Luca's in Musselburgh to refill water tanks and eat 'as much ice cream as possible' before a 'fun-filled afternoon' at Archerfield and back home around 4pm. The annual event is organised and funded by taxi drivers and begins at 9am on Tuesday, June 10.
