Fertility group transfers wrong embryo for second time
Major fertility clinic Monash IVF has admitted to transferring the wrong embryo to a patient, in the second such incident acknowledged by the company in recent months.
In an incident that occurred five days ago at its Melbourne clinic -- the wrong embryo was provided to a patient instead of one from the woman's partner.
Two months ago, the same company revealed a Brisbane patient was mistakenly implanted with another person's embryo, leading to the birth of a baby with no genetic link to the woman who carried the child throughout her pregnancy.
Monash IVF says it will now extend the scope of an independent review into that incident - along with conducting an internal investigation into the latest mishap.
It's also apologised to the affected couple.
Former embryologist Lucy Lines, who now works with prospective parents as a fertility educator and IVF patient advocate, says she cannot understand how this error could have happened twice.
