Eight high school sports takeaways from Tuesday's action, including a new football coach at Lynn Classical

scored five goals for Medford in an 18-4 Greater Boston League win over Lynn, but it was his 12 assists that set single-game program records for assists in a game and points (17) in a game.

2. Walk-off wins
Wakefield, Arlington, Burlington, Marshfield, Reading, and Bedford all won games in the final seconds.
For Marshfield softball, it started when

tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, then watched

drive in the winning run for a 3-2 victory over Duxbury.

3. Going, going, gone
Despite a large slate of baseball and softball games, and warm, summer air invading New England this week, there wasn't a large power display Tuesday, although Kiley and Puglielli both homered for Reading and Hopkinton got blasts from

4. Three stars
Alyx Rossi
, Bedford — The senior continues to dominate before she heads off to Boston College, tossing a three-hit shutout with 18 strikeouts while collecting two hits and an RBI in a 7-0 win over a solid Tyngsborough team.
Alec Smagula
, Brookline — The junior dished 35 assists, including 15 in the third set, as the top-ranked Warriors broke a 15-all tie to earn a 3-0 sweep of No. 3 Needham.

Sharlotte Stazinski,
Walpole — The Colby-bound senior impressed once again, rapping out three hits, driving in five runs, striking out 10 and allowing just one earned run in a 6-2 win over Newton North.

7. Lynn Classical turns to alum
Lynn Classical brought back a member of its own Hall of Fame to lead the Rams' football program, hiring
Brian Smith
effective in August.
Smith brings 23 years of coaching experience, most recently at Kingstree High in South Carolina, which he led to the second round of the playoffs the last two seasons and was named a 2024 Carolina Shrine Bowl coach.

'We are thrilled to welcome coach Smith to the back to the Classical family, although in speaking with coach Smith, you can tell that he never really left,' said Lynn Classical athletic director
Josh Mower
in a statement. 'His passion for the game, commitment to student-athletes, and vision for our football program make him the ideal leader to bring our team to multiple championships.'
Previously, Smith coached CE Murray High in Greeleyville, S.C., where he also served as athletic director and assistant principal. He was named the 2021 4A Region Coach of the Year, and the 5A Region Coach of the Year in 2015, 2016, and 2019. He led Murray to its first state championship in 2015 and also coached three seasons at his alma mater, The Citadel.
A community meet-and-greet event will be held later in May.

signed his commitment letter to play lacrosse at Endicott.
