Nine injured in Ryanair emergency landing in Germany

By Ludwig Burger (Reuters) -A Milan-bound Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing in southern Germany late on Wednesday due to heavy turbulence from a thunderstorm, with nine passengers injured, police said. The flight from Berlin landed safely in Memmingen, about 115 km (70 miles) west of Munich, after bad weather prompted the pilot to initiate the emergency landing, Bavaria police said in a statement. Among the injured were a woman who sustained a head injury, her two-year-old toddler who suffered bruises and a 59-year-old woman complaining of back pain, police said. All three were treated in hospital, while other injuries were treated at the scene. Ryanair said in a statement on Thursday that the flight's captain had requested medical assistance ahead of landing. The airline, which apologised to those affected, said it provided a bus service from Memmingen to Milan late on Wednesday as well as a replacement flight early on Thursday.

Central Cologne evacuated after discovery of wartime bombs

BERLIN (Reuters) - Thousands of people were being evacuated from central Cologne in western Germany on Wednesday following the discovery of three wartime bombs, in what the city authority called the largest such measure since the end of World War II. An evacuation zone with a radius of 1,000 metres will be cleared from 8am (0600 GMT), impacting around 20,500 residents as well as many workers and hotel guests in the city's historic old town and popular Deutz district, a statement from the authority said. Three American bombs from World War II, each with impact fuses, were discovered during construction work on Monday in Deutz, a bustling area on the bank of the River Rhine. A team of bomb disposal experts plans to disarm the ordnance later on Wednesday, the statement said. Unexploded bombs are often found in Germany, which had many of its major cities bombed to ruins during the war, and such operations often go smoothly. The evacuation area includes one hospital, two retirement homes and nine schools, as well as 58 hotels and many museums. "Everyone involved hopes that the defusing can be completed in the course of Wednesday. This is only possible if all those affected leave their homes or workplaces early and stay outside the evacuation area from the outset on that day," the city authority said in a statement appealing to residents to follow instructions. The measures caused major disruptions to transport in and out of the city of over a million people, with Germany's national rail operator warning that many trains would be diverted or possibly cancelled. Germany arrests minors in strike against far-right 'terrorist' group

By Ludwig Burger FRANKFURT (Reuters) -German authorities on Wednesday arrested five adolescents suspected of forming a far-right terrorist group and said the charges included attempted murder and severe arson. The arrests follow arson attacks on a community centre and a refugee shelter. Federal prosecutors said in a statement the five were male culpable minors who formed a group which styled itself as the "last wave of defence" to protect the "German nation". They listed eight German members of the group, disclosing their first names and the initial of their last names, including three who had been previously arrested. Their ages were not disclosed. The group's "aim is to commit acts of violence primarily against migrants and political opponents to bring about the collapse of the democratic system of Germany," the statement said. Two of the five are believed to have committed arson at a cultural community centre in October in the eastern state of Brandenburg. Two other members of the group who were arrested previously are accused of breaking a window and firing fireworks into a migrant shelter in Saxony in January. The statement added that more than 220 police officers were involved in the five arrests and searches of premises across five regional states. Politically motivated crimes in Germany surged about 40% to a record high last year, a report by the interior ministry showed on Tuesday, with an especially sharp growth seen in far-right violence. Deepening political polarisation, a series of closely fought elections and the war in Gaza were cited as underlying reasons for the growth in violence. Far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) scored its best-ever results in national elections in February, calling for tighter immigration controls and a departure from the European Union.

Roche seeks US tariff relief in direct talks with Trump administration

By Ludwig Burger (Reuters) -Swiss drugmaker Roche is petitioning the U.S. government in direct talks for import tariff exemptions, arguing the products it ships into the United States are offset by its exports of U.S.-made drugs and diagnostics. "As long as we produce the same amount in the U.S. as we import ... we would not be impacted by tariffs. That's kind of the discussion we are trying to have with the U.S. government," CEO Thomas Schinecker said in a media call after the release of first-quarter sales figures. He added that Roche was in touch with various levels of President Donald Trump's administration, arguing that a U.S. drive for all goods used in the country to be produced there would inflate manufacturing costs. "For diagnostics, when you have 10,000 products, you cannot produce 10,000 products in every country," said Schinecker. He said Roche was arguing it would "produce as much in volume as you use in the U.S., because some of that you may export". The Swiss drugmaker said on Tuesday it would invest $50 billion in the United States over the next five years, creating more than 12,000 jobs, in the latest massive investment by companies reacting to Trump's tariff policy. Schinecker said on Thursday this announcement would not translate into less funding earmarked for sites elsewhere in the world and that Roche was also not increasing its overall budgets for global investments, research and development. Roche earlier on Thursday confirmed its full-year financial guidance and reported a forecast-beating 7% rise in first-quarter sales, driven by breast cancer drug Phesgo, eye drug Vabysmo and allergy treatment Xolair.
