POLK COUNTY, Texas (KETK)- A bill is being proposed in Texas that is meant to eliminate a legal loophole that is allowing sexual predators to avoid registering as sex offenders. Officials said they found Audrii's body in the Trinity River on Feb. 20 near the Polk and San Jacinto county line under State Highway 59 south. After Cunningham's disappearance it was discovered that she was kidnapped and murdered by Don McDougal, who was a family friend and lived on the family's property. Following Cunningham's death, McDougal was charged with capital murder and will be spending the remainder of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. Texarkana man arrested for damaging Tesla with mini four-wheeler, police say In 2007, McDougal was charged with indecency of a child but was charged with a lesser offense that did not require him to register as a sex offender. The bill titled Audrii's Law would force those found guilty of child grooming to register as sex offenders and make their crimes available to the public. The bill is being proposed by Texas House Representative Trent Ashby, who is a part of district nine. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
