Why Padres trade for .177 hitting White Sox star makes sense

The post Why Padres trade for .177 hitting White Sox star makes sense appeared first on ClutchPoints. June is here. This is the month when things start to get serious in Major League Baseball. The Midseason Classic is a month away, and voting for players to make the All-Star team will begin shortly. Trade season is also looming as we are now under two months before that deadline. The San Diego Padres are certainly a team that will be buyers at the deadline and desperately need a left fielder and pitching rotation help. Advertisement Luis Robert Jr. has been a name that has circulated trade rumors for the last two seasons. The Chicago White Sox are a team who are not close to competing. At 18-42, the Sox are once again one of the laughing stocks of the league, and it will be hard to imagine a flip of the script any time soon. A Padres and Robert Jr. pairing makes sense, even with Robert Jr. playing poorly this season. ESPN's Jeff Passan recently published his trade deadline piece, and mentions the potential pairing of Robert Jr. and the Padres. One of the primary reasons anyone makes sense for a trade is the opportunity for a fresh start. You cannot say that for every player, especially for ones who have been moved many times in their career. The 27-year-old has been with the White Sox his entire career. A fresh start may very well be the best thing for him. Envisioning playing for the Padres, a team that badly needs an outfielder, should be on his mind. The White Sox can get it done. They would receive prospects in return, and Padres' GM A.J. Preller has not shied away from making blockbuster moves. Over the last few seasons, he has done everything he can to turn the Padres into a winning ball club. A lot of moves have been questionable, but adding a star in this league to the roster has a chance to be one of his better moves.

(AP Photo/David Banks) CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox are going to rest Luis Robert Jr. for a couple days to give the slumping slugger more room to work on some changes at the plate. First-year manager Will Venable said he is planning to keep Robert out of the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday against Detroit. Advertisement 'He'll be available, but not in the starting lineup, just to give (him) an opportunity to really dial in some of these adjustments without just feeling the pressure of having to go out there and perform,' Venable said. 'So he's in a good spot physically. And just want to give him a couple days here to lock in some of these adjustments.' The 27-year-old Robert is 1 for 20 with 10 strikeouts and three walks in his last seven games. He is batting a career-low .177 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 55 games this season. The last-place White Sox had lost seven of eight going into Tuesday night's game against the Tigers. Michael A. Taylor replaced Robert in center field. Venable said Robert responded positively to the idea of taking a couple days off. Advertisement 'He is putting in a ton of work and working extremely hard all throughout the day to try and get this thing right,' Venable said. 'He agreed that it would be a good idea just to press pause on the games, just for a couple of days here.' Robert had a major league-high 21 steals going into Tuesday's action, and he also plays strong defense in center. But he hasn't been able to find his swing at the plate. An All-Star in 2023, Robert has been playing through some right knee soreness. But Venable said he doesn't think it has been limiting him in any way. 'There's some soreness, but I think that it's not more than any soreness that all these guys feel during the course of the summer and playing hard out there every day,' he said. Advertisement The White Sox made a move with their pitching staff on Tuesday, placing right-hander Jonathan Cannon on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. Right-hander Caleb Freeman was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. The 24-year-old Cannon was tagged for five runs in three innings in a 13-1 loss to Detroit in the series opener on Monday night. He is 2-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 starts and two relief appearances this season. 'Got some imaging done and they're continuing to evaluate it,' Venable said. "Yeah, it's gonna be some time here, but we'll continue to see how he feels before we put a timeline on it.' ___ AP MLB:

Phillies Linked to Luis Robert Jr. to Replace Beloved Outfielder

Phillies Linked to Luis Robert Jr. to Replace Beloved Outfielder originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have been an NL powerhouse since 2022, reaching the World Series that season and winning the NL East by an impressive six games in 2024. Fresh off their first division title in 13 years, the Phillies are locked in a tight battle against the New York Mets, who hold a one-game lead in the East. Advertisement As a clear contender, whether they win the division or make it into the postseason via the wild card round, the Phillies will undoubtedly be buyers at the trade deadline. The Phillies' main pursuit will be in finding pitching help, however, one analyst recently speculated on who the Phillies might be interested in to boost their offense. In a piece from Bleacher Report, MLB writer Kerry Miller suggested the Phillies might want to take a gamble on Luis Robert Jr. 'After a mediocre 2024 season and an even worse first two months of the present season, though, we shall see if they can even manage to trade [Luis Robert Jr.] at all this summer,' Miller wrote when predicting the major trade chips on the market this year. Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. (88) at bat in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Peter Aiken-Imagn Images 'Robert has at least been healthy, though. So healthy, in fact, that he somehow leads the majors in stolen bases despite possessing one of the worst batting averages among qualified hitters. Moreover, center fielders worth anything close to a darn aren't exactly growing on trees and readily available at the trade deadline. The Phillies and Mets could both use one.' Advertisement Over his career, Robert has compiled some notable stats and achievements. Unfortunately, injuries have consistently derailed him. As of today, he has only eclipsed 100 games played in a single season once. The former Silver Slugger and Gold Glover has shown a remarkable talent for every aspect of the game. However, this year, the White Sox slugger owns a .180/.270/.291 slash line with five home runs and 21 steals. If the Phillies do trade for him, it would be for his explosive potential when compared to Brandon Marsh. Like Robert, Marsh has also scuffled, hitting .220/.319/.330 with two home runs. If Robert can find his old form, this buy-low opportunity could be a once-in-a-decade type deal for whoever lands him. ‘I just focus on trying to get better': Chicago White Sox CF Luis Robert Jr. not concentrating on trade chatter

Luis Robert Jr. briefly took up the role of a general manager when the topic of trade talks came up Tuesday afternoon at Rate Field. 'I think right now, as my season is going, I don't think anybody is going to take a chance on me,' Robert said through an interpreter in a lighthearted moment. Robert's mind isn't on any of those conversations. 'I just focus on trying to get better,' he said. 'I can't think of anything else.' Robert's name had been mentioned in trade speculation during the offseason. The chatter hasn't died down much in the regular season, even though the Chicago White Sox center fielder is off to a slow start. He entered Tuesday slashing .186/.281/.308 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 44 games. 'I feel good in the cage, I feel good throughout my preparation for the game, it's just a matter of the results haven't been there in the games,' Robert said. 'But I've been feeling good with my routine. 'Everybody here works hard to get the results every day. When you are working hard and the results aren't there, it's sad. You feel a little sad, for sure.' Robert is trying to find the proper mix of aggressiveness and patience at the plate. 'I've been feeling good with my strike zone,' Robert said. '(But) I've been missing the pitches that I'm not supposed to miss. That has been the bigger issue. 'I think it's because I'm thinking too much. I think I'm thinking the pitches that are balls instead of pitches that are being thrown as strikes.' Manager Will Venable is confident Robert will find the balance. 'We've talked, and for me, as an observer, you see a guy that has one mentality on the bases and in the outfield and that's an aggressive one and then maybe a little in between at the plate,' Venable said. 'For me, it's just about making sure he felt supported. At the same time, we're challenging him to do all the right things that he needs to do to make adjustments to get better and he's doing those things. 'I think he knows where he's at. He's working extremely hard to make adjustments. He's going to find what he needs to find to have more confidence at the plate.' Robert has been a threat when he does reach safely, leading the majors with 17 stolen bases entering Tuesday. 'I've been stealing a lot of bases just because I have that ability and just trying to make the most of the chances that are on the bases,' Robert said. 'There have been few instances where I've been able to do that, especially with the season that I've been having at the plate. But that's something that I enjoy. I try to help my team in any way I can.' Robert is focused on putting in the work to get back to his 2023 All-Star form. 'I try to be that player every day,' Robert said. 'I prepare myself the best way I can to be that player. If at the end of the day the results aren't there, that is something I can't control. But I prepare myself to be that player every day.' The Sox signed free agent right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser to a one-year, $1.35 million contract, the team announced Tuesday afternoon. The Sox slotted Houser right into the rotation, as he was the scheduled starter for Tuesday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Houser, 32, is 32-39 with a 4.21 ERA, one shutout and 484 strikeouts in 152 career outings (104 starts) during eight major-league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers (2015, 2018-23) and New York Mets (2024). He went 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA and 37 strikeouts in nine appearances (eight starts) with Triple-A Round Rock in the Texas Rangers organization this season before being released on May 15. 'Excited to insert him into the rotation,' Venable said. 'His stuff has ticked up this year. He's got experience, over 100 starts in the major leagues, so happy to slot him in. He's going to put the ball on the ground against righties and has some different ways to get lefties out. 'Excited to add him to the mix.' In Tuesday's corresponding move, the Sox designated pitcher Yoendrys Gómez for assignment. The right-hander allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings during three appearances with the Sox after being claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 10. With Houser's arrival, Bryse Wilson will shift back to the bullpen. Wilson worked in a starter's role after Martín Pérez went on the 60-day injured list in late April with a left flexor strain.

Luis Robert Jr. is off to a rough start with the Chicago White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) — Luis Robert Jr. isn't thinking about the trade deadline at the moment, not with his play so far for the Chicago White Sox. 'I think right now as my season is going I don't think anybody is going to take a chance on me,' Robert said through a translator. 'I just focus on trying to get better. I can't think of anything else.' Robert is off to a rough start in his sixth season with Chicago, batting just .186 with five homers and 17 RBIs. He also has a .589 OPS and 52 strikeouts in 44 games. The 27-year-old Robert is still a strong defensive center fielder, a Gold Glove winner in his rookie season in 2020. He also had a major league-leading 17 steals going into Tuesday night's matchup with the Mariners. But he is struggling at the plate, and that has been frustrating for him. 'Yes of course. Everybody here works hard to get the results every day,' Robert said. 'When you are working hard and the results aren't there, it's sad. You feel a little sad for sure.' Robert has been the subject of trade conversations in the past, but the last-place White Sox haven't found what they think is the right deal for the rebuilding franchise. Robert's contract has $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, with a $2 million buyout for each season. If Robert heats up, he could be one of the top sluggers on the market at the July 31 deadline. But he has shown no signs of a turnaround so far. 'We've talked, and for me, as an observer, you see a guy that has one mentality on the bases and in the outfield and that's an aggressive one and then maybe a little in between at the plate,' first-year White Sox manager Will Venable said. 'For me, it's just about making sure he felt supported. At the same time, we're challenging him to do all the right things that he needs to do to make adjustments to get better and he's doing those things.' Robert was regarded as a rising star as late as 2023, when he batted .264 with 38 homers, 80 RBIs and 20 steals in 145 games. He made the AL All-Star team that year. But he missed almost two months of last season with a right hip flexor strain, and he finished the year on a career-long homerless drought of 34 games. He batted .224 with 14 homers and 35 RBIs in 100 games. He thinks his slow start this year has to do with overthinking and his timing at the plate. 'I feel good in the cage. I feel good throughout my preparation for the game,' he said. 'It's just a matter of the results haven't been there in the games. But I've been feeling good with my routine.' A year after Chicago went 41-121, breaking the post-1900 major league record for losses in a season, it dropped to 14-34 with Monday night's 5-1 loss to Seattle. The White Sox signed Adrian Houser to a $1.35 million, one-year contract on Tuesday, and the right-hander was slated to start against the Mariners. To make room for Houser on the roster, right-hander Yoendrys Gómez was designated for assignment. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Houser, 32, was released by Texas on Tuesday. He went 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA in nine games with Triple-A Round Rock this year. He is 32-39 with a 4.21 ERA in 152 appearances in the majors with Milwaukee and the New York Mets. With Houser joining the rotation, Bryse Wilson is going back to Chicago's bullpen. '(Houser's) got experience, over 100 starts in the major leagues, so happy to slot him in and he's going to put the ball on the ground against righties and got some different ways to get lefties out,' Venable said. 'Excited to add him to the mix.' ___ AP MLB:
