Missouri basketball lands Jefferson City product, Oklahoma center in transfer portal
Mizzou's second transfer portal addition will be a homecoming. Missouri basketball is expected to sign Oklahoma big man Luke Northweather out of the transfer portal, a source told the Columbia Daily Tribune. The news was first reported Sunday evening by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Northweather is a Jefferson City native and Blair Oaks High product, and is listed at 6-foot-11, 240 pounds. Advertisement The big man struggled to find significant minutes in three seasons in Norman. He redshirted in his freshman year after choosing the Sooners over Mizzou in the Class of 2022 as an unranked prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings. Northweather appeared in 55 games with no starts over the course of the past two years, playing an average of 10.1 minutes per game. Over the course of those reserve appearances, he has averaged 2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. He has 15 blocks and five steals in his college career. Both of those totals are lower than Caleb Grill, Jacob Crews, Mark Mitchell, Trent Pierce, Peyton Marshall, Josh Gray and outgoing transfers Marcus Allen and Aidan Shaw from the Mizzou roster last season. Northweather is 41.9% from the field in his college career. Northweather was the 2021-22 Gatorade Missouri Boys Basketball Player of the Year, and scored 2,000 career points with Blair Oaks in Jefferson City. Former Oklahoma center Luke Northweather commits to SEC foe Former Oklahoma Sooners center Luke Northweather is heading home. Northweather entered the transfer portal after the season and will stay in the Southeastern Conference after committing to Missouri on Sunday. He played in 30 games for the Sooners in the 2024-25 season, averaging 2.7 points in 11.3 minutes per game. His numbers may have been slight on the season, but Northweather had his moments. He scored 10 points against Arizona and Texas during the regular season, showing he has a place in an SEC rotation. Missouri could use the size, too, after the Tigers lost freshman center Marcus Allen to the portal. He's the third rotational player the Sooners have lost since the season ended. Guard Duke Miles entered the transfer portal last week, and guard Jeremiah Fears also declared for the NBA Draft. Northweather was a three-star recruit from Jefferson City, Missouri, coming out of high school. He played 55 games over his two seasons on the court, averaging 10.1 minutes per game. He has two years of eligibility left with the Tigers. Oklahoma basketball coach Porter Moser has been linked to other coaching openings, most loudly at Texas A&M., but he hasn't tipped his hand either way. NORMAN — The college basketball transfer portal season has started. With Oklahoma's season over after falling to UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, focus now turns to the offseason. Sooners head coach Porter Moser's name has been floated as a candidate for Villanova's open head coaching job but that hasn't stopped OU from beginning to recruit the portal. The Oklahoma Sooners season came to an end on Friday night in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, losing to two-time defending national champion UConn Huskies. It was a strong finish for the Sooners after they had to fight back into the tournament following a five-game losing streak in January and February. Porter Moser likely did enough to see more time with the Sooners, but now he has to rebuild his roster once again with Jalon Moore, Sam Godwin, Brycen Goodine, Duke Miles, Kobe Elvis, and Mohamed Wague set to graduate and the likelihood that leading scorer Jeremiah Fears heading to the NBA Draft lottery. That task was made a little more difficult on the opening day of the transfer portal with Oklahoma forwards Luke Northweather and Yaya Keita headed to the transfer portal, according to SoonerScoop and On3's Bob Przybylo. Northweather played a rotational role for the Sooners this season, coming off the bench to provide a stretch scoring option for the Sooners. In the wake of what would end up being a season-ending injury for Godwin, Northweather's minutes increased. Over Oklahoma's final four games, he averaged 15.5 minutes a game, up from his season average of 11. In 2024-2025, Northweather twice scored 10 points, helping to key wins over No. 24 Arizona and on the road against Texas in the regular season finale.
