French films with English subtitles to watch in May 2025

French director Jacques Audiard's Palme d'Or, Bafta Golden Globe and César-winning movie, which is nominated for 13 Academy Awards, is the feature for a special Lost in Frenchlation Oscar night. It paints an, 'exhilarating half-sung Spanish-language portrait of a former cartel boss's life-changing transformation', according to trade publication, Variety – but it has found itself at the centre of something of a storm of controversy over its subject matter, and the views of its main star Karla Sofía Gascón, after it garnered a near-record number of Oscar nods.
