Scientists baffled after finding 6,000 year-old skeletons with no link to humans
The discovery, made in the Bogotá Altiplano of Colombia, has complicated the already-debated story of South America's first inhabitants - who were thought to have crossed from Siberia into North America A mysterious group of ancient hunter-gatherers has left researchers puzzled after DNA analysis revealed they were genetically unlike modern humans. The discovery, made in the Bogotá Altiplano of Colombia, has complicated the already-debated story of South America's first inhabitants. While some theories once proposed that humans reached the continent through transoceanic voyages from Africa or Australia, the dominant view holds that early settlers crossed from Siberia into North America via an Alaskan ice bridge roughly 20,000 years ago. From there, successive waves of migration are believed to have moved southward. The earliest confirmed human remains in South America, including 'Luzia' - a 12,000-year-old skeleton found in Brazil - show ancestry linked to this migration. A second wave of migrants arrived around 9,000 years ago, and a third about 5,000 years after that. However, Colombia, the gateway between Central and South America, has been largely overlooked in ancient DNA studies - until now. Researchers analysed the remains of 21 individuals buried across five archaeological sites in the Bogotá highlands, with skeletons dating from 6,000 to 500 years old. The results, published in the journal Science Advances, were unexpected. 'We show that the hunter-gatherer population from the Altiplano dated to around 6000 yr B.P. lack the genetic ancestry related to the Clovis-associated Anzick-1 genome and to ancient California Channel Island individuals,' the study reports. 'The analysed Preceramic individuals from Colombia do not share distinct affinity with any ancient or modern-day population from Central and South America studied to date.' This means the group that first settled the high plains around Bogotá did not descend from the Clovis people, nor did they contribute genetically to later South American populations. Their DNA appears unique - and then it disappears entirely. The group seems to have vanished roughly 2,000 years ago, possibly as a result of incoming migration. DNA evidence shows that by this time, a new population had taken over the region - one that brought with it agriculture, pottery, and Chibchan languages still spoken in parts of Central America today. 'The genes were not passed on,' said Kim-Louise Krettek of the University of Tübingen. 'That means in the area around Bogotá there was a complete exchange of the population.' This genetic turnover coincides with the cultural shift from the Preceramic period to the Herrera period. The study describes this as a 'seemingly complete replacement' of the region's original inhabitants. 'That genetic traces of the original population disappear completely is unusual,' added Andrea Casas-Vargas of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts are celebrating their graduate! On Thursday, June 5, the former couple reunited to celebrate their 17-year-old son Sasha's high school graduation. Back in May, Watts shared photos and videos of her son Sasha on her Instagram Stories all dressed up and ready to go to his high school prom. In one snap, Watts and Schreiber posed together for a selfie with their son, who wore a dark suit and boutonniere, in the middle. Other pictures and clips showed the teenager with some of his fellow prom-goers and a large shot of the entire class celebrating the momentous occasion. The former couple ended their 11-year relationship in 2016. Since then, Watts and Schreiber have been open about remaining friends and putting their children first. 'We're doing things very differently. I'm pretty proud of us, corny as that may sound,' Watts told Net-a-Porter in August 2019. 'We've made it our absolute priority to be good and kind to each other and we're absolutely committed to that.' On March 6, PEOPLE caught up with the Perfect Couple actor at the Cirque Du Soleil New York City premiere of Luzia, where he was joined by his son. When asked how it felt to be walking carpets with his eldest, Schreiber admitted it's an adjustment process. 'It's strange,' the X-Men star told PEOPLE. 'I felt a little self-conscious walking into the circus with him because, like, it's the kind of thing you do with your kid.' Schreiber added, 'He doesn't feel like my kid anymore. He feels like a man now, so, it's a whole different thing for us.' Read the original article on People

Performing arts market sees 14.5% revenue growth in 2024
South Korea's performing arts market saw a 14.5 percent increase in total ticket sales revenue in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The 2024 Annual Report on Ticket Sales, based on data from the Korea Performing Arts Box Office Information System, revealed that total ticket sales revenue reached 1.45 trillion won ($1 billion). While the number of performances increased by 6 percent on-year to 21,634, and total tickets sold rose by 6.1 percent to 22.24 million. Revenue growth for the same period outpaced both figures, indicating that higher average ticket prices played a significant role. The average ticket price climbed by 5,000 won, reaching 65,000 won per ticket. Theater, musicals, classical music, traditional Korean music, dance and mixed-genre performances accounted for 77.5 percent of all performances and 68.5 percent of total ticket sales, but only 45.9 percent of ticket sales revenue. This was due to lower ticket prices and paid attendance rates in these fields. In contrast, popular music saw a 31.3 percent revenue increase, reaching 756.9 billion won, driven by large-scale concerts, nationwide tours and performances by internationally renowned artists. The top 20 performances by ticket sales revenue in the 2024 performing arts market were dominated by musical productions and concerts by singers. The only exception was Cirque du Soleil's "Luzia," which made its way into the top 20 list with performances in Busan during January and February last year. Regional Imbalance While Seoul remains the dominant hub for performing arts, shifts have occurred due to the growth of performance venues and regional initiatives by the Culture Ministry. The capital region, encompassing Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province, accounted for 75.3 percent of ticket sales and 79.1 percent of revenue. However, Seoul's share of ticket sales revenue decreased from 68 percent in 2023 to 65.1 percent in 2024, while Gyeonggi Province and Incheon saw increases in their shares. This shift is attributed to the growth of performance venues and large-scale productions in these areas. In regions outside the capital, Busan and Daegu hosted the highest number of performances. Classical music dominated most regions, with traditional Korean music taking the lead in South Jeolla Province and musicals in North Chungcheong Province. North Chungcheong also saw the highest growth in theater ticket demand, attributed to the establishment of the Chungbuk Theater Company. Highlighting the regional imbalance in the performing arts market, Culture Minister Yu In-chon stated, "As last year's regional arts support initiative led to the establishment of the Chungbuk Theater Company, we will continue providing practical support to strengthen the sustainability of regional performing arts communities. Furthermore, we will actively expand the reach of national arts institutions to regional areas, ensuring that people nationwide have access to diverse and high-quality performances."
