Greece CSD couples tech and education to protect students against digital harm

GREECE, N.Y. (WROC) — Wednesday, Lynn Girolamo could be found at Paddy Hill Elementary doing what she does all the time: visiting schools throughout the Greece Central District to help kids navigate the pervasive and ever-changing digital world. It's part of a mission she picked up years ago.'We do have a lot more research now that tells us in the last 10 years kids that already have high anxiety or depression can really succumb to challenging parts of social media,' she digital awareness program is now one of the main prongs within the district to combat the risks of screens and social media. The district has banned cell phones in school since 2022 and is about to install in certain schools new technology designed to detect them. Girolamo says preventing use during the school day is important, but so is helping students develop a healthy relationship with technology outside of school. One of the 5th graders Girolamo was talking to Wednesday appears to have already absorbed some of her lessons. 'Some people their entire life is based on social media, which I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but I think it is important to… you shouldn't be obsessed with it really, you should be able to go out with your friends, or go out with your family and not have to post anything about it,' said Sadie help with all this, Lynn brought in Win At Social, a project and program that encourages kids to engage with other kids to figure out ways to cut screen time and limit social media use.'It's a really great way for kids to turn and talk to each other about these ideas because us as adults we really don't have it all figured out either,' Girolamo of adults, Girolamo and the district are trying to launch a lunch program dedicated to bringing in parents to talk about their family needs.'Also helping parents with settings and features of phones and technology that we can have control over instead of letting it control us,' Girolamo said.
