Reds place OF Austin Hays on the 10-day IL with bruised left foot
CHICAGO (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds placed outfielder Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list on Friday because of a left foot contusion. The Reds also activated outfielder Jake Fraley from the 10-day IL before their series opener against the Chicago Cubs. Right-hander Lyon Richardson was recalled from Triple-A Louisville. Hays, who turns 30 on July 5, got hurt when he fouled a pitch off his foot in the sixth inning of Wednesday's 3-2 loss at Kansas City. He missed the start of the season with a left calf strain and also spent time on the IL with a left hamstring strain. Hays signed a $5 million, one-year contract with the Reds in January. He is batting .303 with six homers and 25 RBIs in 31 games this season. Fraley, 30, got the start in right field for the series opener against Chicago. He had been sidelined by left calf tenderness. Richardson is replacing Luis Mey, who was sent down on Thursday. The 25-year-old Richardson is 0-1 with a 1.32 ERA in 10 games with the Reds this season. ___ AP MLB:

Why Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona apologized to team after loss to Astros Sunday
HOUSTON – At the end of the grueling stretch of games that includes a miserable road trip through Atlanta and Houston, Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona held a quick meeting to tell his guys how much they deserved Monday's scheduled day off. And to apologize. Advertisement Francona leaned especially hard on his bullpen the past week after short starts by Hunter Greene Wednesday, Brady Singer Saturday and Chase Petty Sunday, along with extra-inning games Tuesday and Thursday. Reds manager Terry Francona apologized to his team after Sunday, May 11's 6-0 loss in Houston that capped a 2-5 road trip. They covered all those extra bullpen innings without swapping out young guys like Lyon Richardson or Luis Mey for fresh arms from the minors. Manager Terry Francona said the Reds kept relievers Luis Mey (pictured) and Lyon Richardson instead of calling up fresh arms because the two rookies deserved to stay. 'Because we're trying to build something,' Francona added. 'I think loyalty and all that comes into play. And (general manager) Brad Meador felt the same way. Veteran lefty Brent Suter, for instance, was the first one out of the bullpen Sunday after multi-inning appearances Wednesday and Friday, to put out the fire of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the fourth against a nearly all-right-handed Astros lineup. He gave up a sacrifice fly, then got a strikeout and grounder to limit the damage. In all, the bullpen pitched 30 1/3 of the staff's 61 2/3 innings during the 2-5 trip to Atlanta and Houston – 11 2/3 of 17 the last two games. Sunday's 6-0 loss was the Reds' seventh in nine games. Reds place Tyler Callihan on IL, recall Jacob Hurtubise, Lyon Richardson
The Cincinnati Reds placed outfielder Tyler Callihan on the 10-day injured list following a left forearm fracture suffered in Monday's game in Atlanta. The team recalled right-hander Lyon Richardson and outfielder Jacob Hurtubise and optioned right-hander Yosver Zulueta to Triple-A Louisville. Callihan suffered the injury while attempting to make a catch in the 4-0 loss to the Braves. The 24-year-old, in just his fourth big-league game, immediately came off the field. After the game, Reds manager Terry Francona said Callihan would return to Cincinnati on Tuesday and was expected to have surgery to repair multiple broken bones in his forearm. Zulueta pitched the ninth inning of Monday's game. Richardson pitched three perfect innings in the team's 9-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the second game of a doubleheader last Wednesday. Hurtubise started the season in Cincinnati as an extra outfielder and pinch-runner. The 27-year-old played in nine games for the Reds in the first month with one hit in nine plate appearances. He started one game. Richardson, 25, appeared in two games for the Reds during his brief callup last month, allowing one run in four innings on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
