On Peacekeepers' Day, UNIFIL emphasizes commitment to peace, despite continued tensions

In honour of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, UNIFIL hosted a ceremony at its Naqoura headquarters attended by members of the Lebanese Armed Forces, security services, local political and religious authorities, ambassadors, and UN officials. "The situation along the Blue Line remains tense and unpredictable, with repeated violations and a high risk of miscalculation," Head of Mission and Force Commander Lieutenant-General Aroldo Lázaro said. "Through our liaison and coordination mechanisms, we offer a channel for dialogue and de-escalation helping to build the foundation for a possible solution". Emphasizing the need for a political process, the UNIFIL head noted that, "the path to peace in southern Lebanon is political. We must all work to create the right conditions for a long-term, sustainable solution". "One important step in recent months has been the significant deployment of more LAF soldiers to the south," UNIFIL chief emphasized. "Their presence as the sole providers of state authority and security must be preserved and for that, help from international partners needs to be maintained." During the ceremony, Lieutenant General Lázaro and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander representative Brigadier General Nicola Tabet laid wreaths in tribute to fallen peacekeepers. Over 4,400 UN peacekeepers have lost their lives on missions around the world since 1948, including more than 330 since UNIFIL was established in 1978. "Today, with solemn respect and deep gratitude, their legacy is etched into the foundation of this mission, and their commitment continues to inspire all of us who wear the blue helmet," said Lieutenant General Lázaro. "As we commemorate the 77th anniversary of UN peacekeeping, may we also renew our shared commitment to a more peaceful future, for south Lebanon, for the region, and for all the conflicts where the United Nations tries to bring peace," the UNIFIL head concluded. In 2002, 29 May was designated as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers to pay tribute to the professionalism, dedication, and courage of the military and civilian peacekeepers serving in UN peacekeeping operations, and to remember those who lost their lives for the cause of peace. The date was chosen to commemorate the establishment of the first peacekeeping mission, the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), whose Observer Group Lebanon members currently work alongside UNIFIL for peace and stability in south Lebanon.

Bâoli Dubai Review: Where Glamour, gastronomy and golden hour collide

The Cannes creation includes a restaurant, a secret speakeasy and a beautiful beachfront. As the final piece of the J1 Beach jigsaw puzzle falls into place, Dubai's latest beachfront destination is complete. This stretch of carefully curated coastline has become the talk of the town, its allure built on an enviable collection of beach clubs imported from Cannes, St. Tropez, and Tulum. While each venue along this coveted strip has its own personality and price point, Bâoli Dubai promises leisure, luxury and sun-drenched hedonism. Bâoli's allure extends far beyond its iconic name. Backed by Sunset Hospitality Group, the team behind FACT Award-winning AURA Skypool, Mott 32, and Signor Sassi, the Bâoli brand is bolstered by a designer Prada boutique on-site and what is, without question, the largest swimming pool on this glittering strip. Designed by Barcelona's acclaimed Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio, this waterfront wonder channels the chic charisma of the original Cannes location while creating a setting that is distinctly Dubai. Bâoli offers a blend of coastal cool and Asian mystique, with natural stone, light wood, ornamental textures and cascading greenery lending an immersive edge to every corner, from the petal-shaped Sun Deck to the serene indoor-outdoor dining room. Executive chef Omar Basiony has worked wonders, ensuring the legacy of the Bâoli brand runs through the culinary offering without carrying one dish over from the flagship venue in Cannes. The result is a menu of Mediterranean fare kissed with Japanese precision. A prime example of this approach is the French Sea Bream Carpaccio. Its spiralling ribbons of flesh arranged like petals and dressed with wasabi, spicy miso, and mandarin. The fish hails from a farm off the coast of the original Bâoli in Cannes, paying tribute to the brand's birthplace. Just as striking is the Tomato Carpaccio (AED 80), where chunky Uzbek Couer de Boeuf tomatoes mingle with a delicate yuzu crème fraîche, tomato vinaigrette, and crispy tanuki crumbs. The raw and robata dishes are where the menu excels. The Spicy Tuna Maki (AED 125) pops with crispy quinoa and red tobiko, while the show-stealing Hamachi Crunch (AED 130) delivers a touch of texture and sweetness with its fried exterior, sweet potato purée, and a delicate hamachi tartare. Luxurious ingredients elevate classic Japanese favourites. The Otoro Nigiri, crowned with caviar, is a beautiful bite, while the Toro Uni Bowl, paired with a textured cracker, brings silky, briny intensity in every bite. From the robata, the 300g MB10 Pure Blood Wagyu Striploin (AED 750) is unapologetically indulgent. Charred shishito peppers sit beside slices of perfectly tender beef, each bite layered with umami and smoke. For seafood lovers, the Taraba King Crab (AED 320), grilled whole and slathered in yuzu kosho butter, is decadent and deeply satisfying. However, it's the 12-hour Short Rib (AED 180) that steals the show. Slow-cooked sous vide style and then skewered and charred on the grill, it's a textural triumph paired with tarragon mustard. Desserts are no less theatrical. Glace à Gogo (AED 120) arrives in a cloud of dry ice, a deconstructed sundae featuring Taiyaki-shaped Madeleines glazed in vanilla and brown butter, providing moreish morsels to dip into the sharing portion of velvety crème fraiche gelato. Visiting on a Sunday, we discovered the party-ready polish of Bâoli Dubai. A cosmopolitan crowd soaking up the sun, live percussion and a soundtrack that veers from Drake to Kanye West via Middle Eastern melodies. Framed by towering palms and frangipani trees in full bloom, the central pool is a glistening blue canvas surrounded by pristine daybeds and private cabanas. As the daylight dims, the energy shifts and attention turns to the Moon Room, an elegant speakeasy designed for intimate evenings and crafted cocktails. Bâoli has long been a celebrity magnet with Eva Mendes, Naomi Watts, Jay-Z and Sienna Miller among its loyal Cannes clientele. Its Dubai outpost seems set on continuing the tradition, with French Montana spotted poolside. We even peeped Anthony Joshua as we exited the venue. This heady mix of refined design and A-list energy makes Bâoli Dubai more than just another beach club. Anchored around a marvellous menu and picture-perfect pool, Bâoli guarantees a memorable meal whether you're tanning and having a night out on the tiles. GO: Visit for more information.

Over 20 Israeli Raids Pound Nabatieh District in South Lebanon

Israeli warplanes launched a series of intense airstrikes targeting forested hills and elevated areas in Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh Al-Fawka in southern Lebanon, according to local media reports. The strikes extended to several villages across the Nabatieh district. Lebanon's National News Agency confirmed that Israeli aircraft bombed areas around Nabatieh, including Ali Al-Taher Hill and Dabsha near Kfar Rumman. Explosions were heard across vast areas of southern Lebanon, with shockwaves felt far from the impact zones. Videos shared by residents showed thick plumes of smoke rising from multiple locations. 🇱🇧 Circulating video shows a series of Israeli airstrikes on the heights of Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh Al-Fawqa areas in south Lebanon#Israeliwarplanes #Israeliviolations #النبطية #الجنوب — ManarWeb (@WebManar) May 8, 2025 The attacks come amid continued Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement in place since November. Israeli media claimed the air force targeted a 'significant Hezbollah site' in southern Lebanon, with Yedioth Ahronoth reporting that 20 raids were carried out in two waves. Meanwhile, Al-Manar correspondent reported that Israeli occupation forces opened fire on a civilian vehicle traveling between Adaisseh and Kfarkela. The passengers survived. Artillery also struck the outskirts of Shebaa and the Bastra farm area with two shells. The attacks come amid continued Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement in place since November. According to recent data, Israel has breached the truce more than 3,100 times, resulting in 153 deaths and 354 injuries. UNIFIL Chief: Israeli Actions Prevent Lebanese Army Deployment UNIFIL commander Major General Aroldo Lázaro said that Israeli occupation and military activity are the main obstacles preventing the Lebanese Army's full deployment in the south. In a recent interview, Lázaro openly criticized the Israeli enemy for its continued violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, highlighting that Israeli forces still occupy Lebanese territory despite the ceasefire agreement. He revealed that UNIFIL had issued an official protest against what he described as Israel's 'illegal presence.' He also noted that thousands of Lebanese civilians have been unable to return to their towns due to ongoing Israeli violations. Lázaro's remarks mark a clear acknowledgment from the international community of Israel's role in destabilizing southern Lebanon—an assessment some local voices continue to downplay, focusing their criticism on those upholding the truce instead of those breaking it.

Israeli drone hits a vehicle in Kfar Remmane, killing one and injuring another

An Israeli drone targeted a car in the "al-Jamaat" neighborhood of the village of Kfar Remmane (Nabatieh district), witnesses told our correspondent in southern Lebanon. The strike resulted in one fatality, the driver of the vehicle, and a Syrian passerby on the road. This incident comes as the commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Major General Aroldo Lázaro, urged the Israeli army on Tuesday to "completely withdraw from Lebanese territory and not target the prefabs in border villages." "Every situation that can lead to an escalation of confrontation must be avoided, and we will do our best in this regard in accordance with resolution 1701 to contribute to this stability," emphasized General Lázaro following a meeting in the Jdeidet Marjeyoun municipality building, as his tenure at the head of UNIFIL nears its end. "We urge the Israeli army to completely withdraw from Lebanese territory and not target prefabs in border villages," he continued. Despite the cease-fire agreement, the Israeli army continues to conduct nearly daily airstrikes targeting southern Lebanon and occupies five points it deems "strategic." More than 151 people have been killed since the truce. The UNIFIL commander added that although the situation in southern Lebanon is "more stable today than a few months ago," it remains fragile. "The solution in this region can only be achieved through political decisions, not through us (as UNIFIL) or military actions," he stated. "We recognize that the needs are significant and UNIFIL will always stand by the Lebanese people to the best of our abilities within our mandate and U.N. resolution 1701," Lázaro concluded. In recent days, hostility towards the U.N. force from residents of southern Lebanon has increased, blaming UNIFIL for patrolling villages without the Lebanese army.
