On Peacekeepers' Day, UNIFIL emphasizes commitment to peace, despite continued tensions
In honour of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, UNIFIL hosted a ceremony at its Naqoura headquarters attended by members of the Lebanese Armed Forces, security services, local political and religious authorities, ambassadors, and UN officials. "The situation along the Blue Line remains tense and unpredictable, with repeated violations and a high risk of miscalculation," Head of Mission and Force Commander Lieutenant-General Aroldo Lázaro said. "Through our liaison and coordination mechanisms, we offer a channel for dialogue and de-escalation helping to build the foundation for a possible solution". Emphasizing the need for a political process, the UNIFIL head noted that, "the path to peace in southern Lebanon is political. We must all work to create the right conditions for a long-term, sustainable solution". "One important step in recent months has been the significant deployment of more LAF soldiers to the south," UNIFIL chief emphasized. "Their presence as the sole providers of state authority and security must be preserved and for that, help from international partners needs to be maintained." During the ceremony, Lieutenant General Lázaro and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander representative Brigadier General Nicola Tabet laid wreaths in tribute to fallen peacekeepers. Over 4,400 UN peacekeepers have lost their lives on missions around the world since 1948, including more than 330 since UNIFIL was established in 1978. "Today, with solemn respect and deep gratitude, their legacy is etched into the foundation of this mission, and their commitment continues to inspire all of us who wear the blue helmet," said Lieutenant General Lázaro. "As we commemorate the 77th anniversary of UN peacekeeping, may we also renew our shared commitment to a more peaceful future, for south Lebanon, for the region, and for all the conflicts where the United Nations tries to bring peace," the UNIFIL head concluded. In 2002, 29 May was designated as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers to pay tribute to the professionalism, dedication, and courage of the military and civilian peacekeepers serving in UN peacekeeping operations, and to remember those who lost their lives for the cause of peace. The date was chosen to commemorate the establishment of the first peacekeeping mission, the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), whose Observer Group Lebanon members currently work alongside UNIFIL for peace and stability in south Lebanon.

Over 20 Israeli Raids Pound Nabatieh District in South Lebanon
Israeli warplanes launched a series of intense airstrikes targeting forested hills and elevated areas in Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh Al-Fawka in southern Lebanon, according to local media reports. The strikes extended to several villages across the Nabatieh district. Lebanon's National News Agency confirmed that Israeli aircraft bombed areas around Nabatieh, including Ali Al-Taher Hill and Dabsha near Kfar Rumman. Explosions were heard across vast areas of southern Lebanon, with shockwaves felt far from the impact zones. Israeli media claimed the air force targeted a 'significant Hezbollah site' in southern Lebanon, with Yedioth Ahronoth reporting that 20 raids were carried out in two waves. Meanwhile, Al-Manar correspondent reported that Israeli occupation forces opened fire on a civilian vehicle traveling between Adaisseh and Kfarkela. The passengers survived. Artillery also struck the outskirts of Shebaa and the Bastra farm area with two shells. The attacks come amid continued Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement in place since November. According to recent data, Israel has breached the truce more than 3,100 times, resulting in 153 deaths and 354 injuries. UNIFIL Chief: Israeli Actions Prevent Lebanese Army Deployment UNIFIL commander Major General Aroldo Lázaro said that Israeli occupation and military activity are the main obstacles preventing the Lebanese Army's full deployment in the south. In a recent interview, Lázaro openly criticized the Israeli enemy for its continued violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, highlighting that Israeli forces still occupy Lebanese territory despite the ceasefire agreement. He revealed that UNIFIL had issued an official protest against what he described as Israel's 'illegal presence.' He also noted that thousands of Lebanese civilians have been unable to return to their towns due to ongoing Israeli violations. Lázaro's remarks mark a clear acknowledgment from the international community of Israel's role in destabilizing southern Lebanon—an assessment some local voices continue to downplay, focusing their criticism on those upholding the truce instead of those breaking it.

Israeli drone hits a vehicle in Kfar Remmane, killing one and injuring another
An Israeli drone targeted a car in the "al-Jamaat" neighborhood of the village of Kfar Remmane (Nabatieh district), witnesses told our correspondent in southern Lebanon. The strike resulted in one fatality, the driver of the vehicle, and a Syrian passerby on the road. This incident comes as the commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Major General Aroldo Lázaro, urged the Israeli army on Tuesday to "completely withdraw from Lebanese territory and not target the prefabs in border villages." "Every situation that can lead to an escalation of confrontation must be avoided, and we will do our best in this regard in accordance with resolution 1701 to contribute to this stability," emphasized General Lázaro following a meeting in the Jdeidet Marjeyoun municipality building, as his tenure at the head of UNIFIL nears its end. "We urge the Israeli army to completely withdraw from Lebanese territory and not target prefabs in border villages," he continued. Despite the cease-fire agreement, the Israeli army continues to conduct nearly daily airstrikes targeting southern Lebanon and occupies five points it deems "strategic." More than 151 people have been killed since the truce. The UNIFIL commander added that although the situation in southern Lebanon is "more stable today than a few months ago," it remains fragile. "The solution in this region can only be achieved through political decisions, not through us (as UNIFIL) or military actions," he stated. "We recognize that the needs are significant and UNIFIL will always stand by the Lebanese people to the best of our abilities within our mandate and U.N. resolution 1701," Lázaro concluded. In recent days, hostility towards the U.N. force from residents of southern Lebanon has increased, blaming UNIFIL for patrolling villages without the Lebanese army.
