Salt Lake Co. crews conduct 4 rescues over Memorial Day weekend

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue crews conducted four rescues in one day across the Wasatch Front over Memorial Day weekend. Rescue crews had their hands full over Memorial Day weekend, with teams responding to four rescues within about six hours of each other on Sunday, May 25. The rescues included two cliffed-out hikers in Little Cottonwood Canyon, two lost hikers in Red Pine Canyon, and a dehydrated hiker on Mt. Olympus. All teams from each incident were reportedly off the mountain before 9 p.m. Two hikers were 'cliffed out' on the ridgeline between White Pine and Red Pine Canyons (Pink Pine) in Little Cottonwood Canyon. A four-person search and rescue team responded to the incident, ascending the mountain on foot to reach the individuals. Ultimately, the team determined a helicopter was necessary to conduct the rescue, and two individuals were hoisted from the area. While the White Pine rescue was underway, the Salt Lake Co. Sheriff's Office received a call from the Sandy City Fire Dept. requesting help with a fallen hiker who injured his ankle near the first waterfall in Bells Canyon. Several teams ascended the trail on foot to the injured person and were able to carry him in a Stokes basket back to the trailhead. Courtesy of Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue As the team from the White Pine Rescue was hiking down, some crew members reportedly diverted into Red Pine Canyon to help two lost hikers. The hikers had gone off trail, officials said, though the rescue team was able to find both individuals and get them back to the trailhead. Again, as the rescues above were taking place, the sheriff's office received yet another call for assistance. This rescue involved a dehydrated hiker about one mile up the Mt. Olympus trail. Several rescue crew members headed up the trail on foot and were able to reach the individual, who had reportedly already started making his way down. Crew members provided a medical assessment on the person and then helped them back to the trailhead. For a detailed guide on hiking safety, visit the National Park Service website here. 'M*A*S*H' actress Loretta Swit dead: publicist

Swit who played the high-strung but flirty Houlihan for the entire TV run of the smash series, was nominated for 10 Emmy awards for her work, winning two of them. Her death, at her home in Manhattan, was announced by her publicist, US media reported. AFP has sought confirmation. "M*A*S*H," which sprang from an Oscar-winning 1970 film, aired initially in 1972 and was a hit until it finished in 1983. The comedy was set in a mobile hospital for the US Army during the Korean War, and starred Alan Alda as Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce. The series tackled a range of issues from the tragic to the light-hearted, and was sometimes seen as a satire on US involvement in Vietnam -- a war that was still happening when it first began airing. © 2025 AFP

Loretta Swit dies aged 87 as tributes paid to MASH star

M*A*S*H star Loretta Swit, who has won two Emmys, died aged 87 earlier today, May 30. M*A*S*H icon Loretta Swit has passed away, it has been announced. The iconic actress died of natural causes at her home in New York City. Her representative Harlan Boll said that the New York police reported that the actor died earlier today, May 30, of suspected natural causes. Loretta is best known for playing Major Margaret Houlihan on M*A*S*H, which ran for 11 seasons on CBS from 1972 to 1983. ‌ She took over the role from the late Sally Kellerman, who starred as the character in the film M*A*S*H (1970), reported The Mirror. Loretta won two Emmy Awards for her performance as head nurse Margaret, who was also known as Hot Lips, on the long-running TV spin-off. ‌ She won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Or Variety Or Music Series in 1980 and then again two years later. The actress also managed to give a more feminist and three-dimensional quality to Major Margaret as the show progressed, downplaying her sexualised 'Hot Lips' character. The growing awareness of feminism i n the seventies spurred Houlihan's transformation from caricature to real person, but a lot of the change was due to Swit's influence on the scriptwriters. 'Around the second or third year I decided to try to play her as a real person, in an intelligent fashion, even if it meant hurting the jokes,' Swit told Suzy Kalter, author of The Complete Book of M.A.S.H. ‌ 'To oversimplify it, I took each traumatic change that happened in her life and kept it. I didn't go into the next episode as if it were a different character in a different play. She was a character in constant flux; she never stopped developing.' Loretta's decades-long career also included roles in shows like Hawaii Five-O, Mission: Impossible and the Love Boat in the 1970s. ‌ She had continued to act in the years since M*A*S*H, with her latest credit said to be the film Play the Flute (2019). She also originated the role of police detective Christine Cagney on-screen in the pilot movie for Cagney & Lacey in 1981. She didn't appear in the subsequent TV series though, reportedly due to contractual obligations to M*A*S*H. ‌ Meg Foster replaced her in the first season in 1982, starring alongside Tyne Daly, who remained in the role of Mary Beth Lacey. Sharon Gless is most associated with the role of Cagney though, after taking over from Meg in the second season and appearing until the final season in 1988. Loretta, who's also considered an animal activist alongside her acting work, is being remembered in tributes following the news of her death. Many fans have referenced her role on M*A*S*H in their posts about the acclaimed actor. One fan wrote on X earlier: "Rest in peace [Loretta]. A truly phenomenal actress who will be deeply missed…" Sharing their reaction, another person said in a post: "May you Rest in Peace Loretta. You are off duty now." Someone else wrote: "This is absolutely devastating news... Loretta Swit was an amazing human being. Exceptional on-screen and off-screen. Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen Loretta." Whilst one fan said: "R.I.P [Loretta], thank you for the memories." Another person commented: "No character evolves more across 11 seasons of M*A*S*H than Major Margaret Houlihan. Loretta Swit made it believable."

I-110 to close in both directions after train derails on bridge above interstate

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) will close both directions of I-110 near the Governor's Mansion curve on Friday, May 30, so crews can remove a derailed train from the railroad bridge above the interstate. DOTD said the closure is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will affect the stretch of I-110 between Capitol Access Road and North 22nd Street. According to officials, the train derailed around 1:30 p.m. and will be removed from its tracks with a crane. The lanes were closed due to falling debris but reopened as of 2:10 p.m. Friday. Officials said the contents of the train remain unknown at this time. No injuries were reported. After the train is gone, officials will inspect the bridge and road to ensure both are safe for travel. The closure will last a few hours. DOTD said they should reopen the interstate early Saturday, unless unexpected issues arise. Drivers are asked to exit the interstate before the overpass and use alternate routes.
