'If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work, but you'll never know until you actually try it'
For as long as she could remember, Mariam Surian was fascinated by the bold colours and shapes found on traditional south Asian clothing. Those designs became the source of inspiration for her shoe company which she launched at just 19-years-of age. The company is called La Benim, and it is a luxury shoe brand that combines South Asian culture, heritage and ethnic designs. Since its inception in 2022, Mariam has been featured at luxurious fashion shows held at grand locations in Dubai and India. 'I started the idea when I was in college, when I was 19.' She told the M.E.N. READ MORE: Tributes as 'happy go lucky' man killed alongside beloved dog in south Manchester horror crash named READ MORE: Neo-Nazis celebrate Hitler's birthday in an Oldham pub with racist flags and a swastika cake 'Growing up I was surrounded by patterns, colours and embroidery which I loved a lot, so It came naturally to draw my own patterns and designs. 'I loved shoes as well, so I would draw shoes and visualise the patterns. During the pandemic I started doing more and more and then I realised that I wanted people to see my designs and I wanted to see what I could achieve with it as well. Mariam says that she comes from a 'working-class' family in Oldham and she has taught herself how to build a business from scratch with the help of the internet. 'All of this is self-taught; I did my own research and I just worked really hard for this. I was reading books and studying other people about how they brought their businesses to life. 'We're just a normal working-class family, so there's no background in business.' Last year her designs were showcased at a debut show in Dubai in partnership with The Fashion Connect. Despite her early success, it hasn't been easy, however. Mariam is balancing her studies in graphic design at Oldham Campus University, working part-time jobs, and supporting a growing dream which she says has been 'manageable' so far. 'A lot of it was how my parents pushed me to always try something out.' She told the M.E.N 'If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work, but you'll never know until you actually try it. 'People have seen my designs and I've done a couple of exhibitions and I've been invited to some other shows and just last year I did my first ever show in Dubai, which was a huge moment for me. 'Honestly it was amazing, I'd never been to Dubai before and it was amazing to see my shoes come to life amongst other designers, high profile ones too.'

Young woman 'partially decapitated' herself diving into pool on Turkey holiday
A young British woman who "partially decapitated" herself after diving into a pool and breaking her neck on holiday is lucky to be alive, medics claim. Becca Reed was in Turkey celebrating her 23rd birthday with a friend on May 16, 2022, when she dived to catch a ball during a game of pool volleyball and hit her head on the concrete base of the pool. The now 25-year-old the following days in a "haze and daze", managing the pain with painkillers and believing she just had whiplash. It wasn't until she returned home and sought medical advice on May 19 that she discovered she had crushed the C5 and C6 vertebrae in her neck. This led to two surgeries and years of mental and physical rehabilitation. Becca told the M.E.N: "When I did eventually see a doctor, the first thing she said after I told her what had happened was, 'I'm surprised you're not dead. "I was in pain, but there was no swelling, there was no bruising , my muscles were all just really tight – and it's called guarding. "My muscles were guarding the rest of my body because I essentially partially decapitated myself, so my muscles were holding my head on. "I had been going to the gym five or six times a week for nearly two years beforehand – and that is why I am alive. "Doctors said if my injury had happened to a normal person , they wouldn't walk, move, talk." Becca has always led an active lifestyle, taking part in weightlifting, skipping and boxing. But the incident in Turkey changed her life "in an instant". She explained: "The dive just went so wrong . My hands didn't even hit the bottom, my head was just the first thing to hit the bottom. "Once the injury had happened, I just floated in the water for what felt like an eternity and I was just thinking, 'Can I move my feet?'" Becca soon realised she could move and climbed out of the pool, and over the following days remained in bed, taking painkillers. "I hadn't jumped to, 'I've broken my neck or I've broken my spine', I just thought it was severe whiplash," she said. After flying home, the pain increased and on May 19 she called NHS 111 for advice. She was advised to visit A&E, where she underwent an X-ray and various scans before being placed in a neck brace. She then underwent two operations: one to replace the shattered vertebrae with a metal structure, and another to stabilise her neck with rods and screws . She said: "The pain was actually the worst after the second surgery because they had to cut through all of my neck and back muscles," she said. "The surgeon said you've grown muscles where people don't usually grow muscles because I used to lift weights, and that is one of the main reasons why everything else held on."

'It was absolutely terrifying - I actually had the tank shell in my hands'
A man clearing out the cellar of his new house prompted a major police response after he discovered a tank shell from World War Two. Emergency services swarmed Reuben Street in Reddish at around midday on Friday (April 11) following the discovery, which prompted the entire street to be cordoned off and neighbours evacuated. The adjacent Manchester Road was closed for a number of hours as police, fire and army bomb disposal units worked to safely retrieve the shell. It was then transported to Woodbank Park where a controlled explosion was carried out just after 3:30pm. READ MORE: Armed cops swoop in Manchester city centre following reported kidnapping READ MORE: Father-and-son City fans Alan, 72, and Justin, 28, tragically die a week apart The owner of the property, who bought it at auction and asked not to be named, told the M.E.N he was in the process of clearing and renovating it when he made the discovery. 'I had nearly finished it all, and I was in the cellar when I noticed a cupboard I hadn't looked in yet,' he said. 'It was absolutely terrifying. I actually had the shell in my hands and it was all rusty and crumbling away.' 'I thought, OK, let's just put this down, and I called the police straight away. They shut the road immediately – it was unbelievable.' The owner said he had been clearing out the house for over a month and had removed eight skips' worth and two van loads of items from the property. The previous owners were an elderly couple believed to have lived there for 'decades'. Incredibly, this is not the first time he has had to get police involved in his clear-out. 'I never knew the previous owners, but from going through the property, you can build a picture of who they were,' the owner said. 'He seemed to like his DIY – and he liked to go hunting too. 'He had a shotgun license, an air rifle, and an antique musket." A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: "At around 11.45am this morning (Friday 11 April 2025), we were called to reports of a historic tank shell from World War Two found at an address on Reuben Street in Reddish, Stockport. "Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene and took the device to a nearby park to carry out a controlled explosion. "As a precaution, a number of properties in the area have been asked to evacuate and there are road closures in place. Thank you for your cooperation."
