CODISSIA opposes the proposed hike in power tariff from July 1
The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association has urged the Tamil Nadu government and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to not implement the proposed increase in power tariff for industries from July 1. The Association president, M. Karthikeyan, said in a press release that the hike, if implemented, will impact the sustainability of the Micro, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (MSMEs). The industries are currently operating just 50% to 70% capacity due to high cost of raw material costs, increase in operational costs both in domestic and global markets, shortage of manpower, recent uncertainties such as the US import tariff, the geo political situation and war conflicts A further rise in power tariff could lead to additional financial stress, reduction in industrial output, job losses and even closure of industries. The government should reconsider the multi-year tariff revision and not implement any hike in electricity charges for the MSMEs, he said.

Girl with Rett Syndrome undergoes scoliosis surgery in a Thanjavur hospital
The scoliosis surgery done on a 12-year-old girl of Thanjavur having Rett Syndrome complication has helped her breath a fresh lease of life. According to Dr. M. Karthikeyan, Senior Consultant Spine Surgeon, Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur, the girl was brought to the hospital a year ago with abnormal spine curve and Rett Syndrome. Careful examination led to the conclusion that scoliosis surgery alone would be the solution for the spinal cord problem of the patient. Subsequently, surgery was performed on her wherein the surgical team used the advanced technology 'Intra Operative Neuro Monitoring' (IONM) that helped track the condition of the spinal cord and nerves in real time during the intervention, making the procedure safe and more precise. Stating that the physiotherapy team played a crucial role in helping the girl regain strength and mobility, Dr. Karthikeyan said with sustained assistance of the medical and paramedical teams post surgery, the patient was doing well now. Commending the surgery team, S. Gurushankar, Chairman of Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur, said that scoliosis was not uncommon, but it was often neglected in rural areas because of lack of awareness and screening programmes. Many mild cases go unnoticed. If detected early, surgery could often be avoided with the use of braces or supportive belts, he said.

Credit off take by MSMEs in Coimbatore reduces
With several industrial sectors facing a slowdown of orders for almost a year now, credit offtake by the Micro, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in the manufacturing sector seems to be shrinking. 'An industry will need funds either for expansion or for a new venture. It is a widespread belief that in the last one year, MSMEs are reluctant to invest,' said M. Karthikeyan, president of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association. 'We are talking about components and spares coming to Coimbatore in huge quantities from Gujarat as the MSMEs in Tamil Nadu, especially Coimbatore, are losing their cost competitiveness. If the current demand trend continues, more MSMEs in Coimbatore will go out of business,' added C. Sivakumar, president of the Coimbatore Tiruppur District Tiny and Micro Enterprises Association. Industries faced a slight drop in business in 2023-24. Instead of a revival, the situation worsened last fiscal. This year, demand is dull in the first month and there is no sign of a orders picking up. So, MSMEs do not want to invest in such a scenario, said Mr. Sivakumar. Offtake of bank loans in Coimbatore by MSMEs was nearly ₹35,500 crore in 2024-25. Even in February this year, the offtake was slow and several industry associations organised loan melas. The interest rate offered by the lenders in the non-banking financial sector (NBFCs) is competitive now for machinery purchase too and many MSMEs are moving to the NBFCs for loans, said Mr. Karthikeyan. The Potential Linked Credit Plan for 2025-26 envisages almost the same disbursement as last year by the banks for MSMEs. Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said the annual credit plan for Coimbatore for the current financial year would be released in the second week of May. Industry leaders say Coimbatore MSMEs require focused support packages to help them revive.
