After summer vacation, schools in Tiruchi welcomed students on Monday. On the first day of the new academic year, textbooks, notebooks, school bags, stationery, shoes, and two sets of uniforms were distributed to children in government and government-aided schools. A total of 7,79,101 textbooks, 8,65,401 notebooks, 1,33,928 sets of school uniforms, and 2,41,282 books were distributed to students of 1,297 government and 363 aided schools in Tiruchi this academic year. Collector M. Pradeep Kumar distributed textbooks, uniforms, and other items to students at Syed Murthuza Government Higher Secondary School here. In Perambalur, about 418 government and aided school students received 31,903 sets of uniforms, 52,071 notebooks and 53,877 books. Children in 11 self-financed Tamil-medium schools also received notebooks. A total of 36,301 students studying in Tamil medium and 5,048 in English medium from Classes 1 to 5 at 751 government and aided schools, and 73,827 Tamil medium students and 14,116 English medium students of Classes 6 to 12 studying at 140 schools in Karur district received textbooks and other school items on Monday. Textbooks, notebooks, school bags, shoes, socks, atlases, crayons, colour pencils, geometry boxes, and uniforms were distributed to the students. Collector P. Rathinasamy distributed textbooks, uniforms and other items to 462 students of Classes 6 to 12 at the Government Model Higher Secondary School in Asithinapuram in Ariyalur. As many as 1,32,155 textbooks, 95,086 notebooks, and 64,610 uniforms have been distributed to students studying in government and aided schools in Ariyalur district. About 34,448 pairs of socks were given to students from classes 6 to 10, 48,168 school bags for classes 6 to 12, 13,966 geometry boxes for classes 6 to 9, and 5,462 drawing books for class 6 students have been distributed to the students, said Mr. Rathinasamy. Earlier, officials conducted a meeting with the school heads and inspected the availability of textbooks and other school items. They ensured that the schools were cleaned and repair works were carried out on the premises to welcome the children after a month-long break.

Persons with disabilities receive assistive devices in Tiruchi

The Department for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons (DWDAP), in collaboration with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), presented assistive devices to 217 persons with disabilities from Thuraiyur, Tiruchi, Tiruverumbur, Manachanallur, and Lalgudi at the Tiruchi Collectorate on Thursday. According to an official note, the beneficiaries were selected through social reinforcement meetings held by DWDAP, and received 461 assistive devices worth ₹21.73 lakh. District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar and Durai Vaiko, MP, distributed the devices on Thursday. Among the devices were motorised and ordinary tricycles, foldable wheelchairs, axilla and elbow crutches, assistance to daily living (ADL) kits for leprosy patients, mobile phones, and hearing aids. ALIMCO, which functions under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, and DWDAP had earlier presented assistive devices to 597 beneficiaries. As part of Special Mother's Day celebrations, the Collector felicitated 50 mothers who have worked hard to take care of their children with disability, in the presence of R. Ravichandran, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer, Tiruchi, and senior officials.

Cancer screening camps gets under way in Tiruchi district

Free cancer screening camps will be held across the district for people aged above 18 at the health centres. Collector M. Pradeep Kumar inaugurated one such camp at the health and wellness centre at Gandhipuram in Tiruchi on Monday. The purpose of the camps is to screen people for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and oral cancer at the beginning stage and provide appropriate treatment for recovery. It aims at raising awareness about cancer and rehabilitation for cancer survivors. District-level training sessions have been conducted for the woman health nurses (WHN) and they are engaged in a door-to-door awareness campaign to sensitise women and invite them to the screening camp. The initiative has been expanded to 164 health and wellness centres and 84 primary health centres in the district. Mr. Kumar said people aged over 18 would be screened for oral cancer once a year and women aged over 30 would be screened for breast cancer and cervical cancer once in three years. On diagnosing symptoms, the patient would be referred to hospitals empanelled under the CM's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Under the initiative, about 22.20 lakh people would be screened for oral cancer and 7.76 lakh women would be screened for breast and cervical cancer in the district. Steps are being taken to organise screening camps at government offices and industrial establishments, he added.

The Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) in collaboration with the Directorate of Collegiate Education, organised the third phase of its Outcome-Based Education (OBE) training programme for faculty members of government arts and science colleges in the Tiruchi region on the Khajamalai campus of Bharathidasan University on Saturday. According to an official release, the programme was inaugurated by District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar. M.P. Vijayakumar, vice-chairperson, TANSCHE, and P. Ponmuthuramalingam, Regional Joint Director of the Directorate of Collegiate Education, were present. Kanmani Buddhi, professor, BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru, in her keynote address, shared insights into designing curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment practices that align with learning outcomes. Around 110 faculty members from various government colleges in the Tiruchi region participated in the training programme. OBE is a learner-focused approach that emphasises the achievement of specific, measurable outcomes by the end of a course or programme. It promotes active learning, critical thinking, and real-world preparedness among students, with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement through regular evaluation and feedback, said the release.

District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar inaugurated new equipment worth ₹98.40 lakh at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi on Friday. In an official release, hospital authorities said that the new tools were an echocardiogram (ECG) with adult, paediatric and neonatal probe; a pulsed electro-magnetic stimulation therapy device, and a combined ultrasonic therapy tool for all types of pain. The machines are sponsored by the Corporate Social Responsibility funds of Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), Chennai The new equipment would be useful in treating cardiac patients, newborns and mothers, and augment the healing of fractures, besides aiding pain relief, said the release. At present, the Cardiology department receives at least 200 patients for ECG services. The instruments were launched by the Collector in the presence of Jacintha Lawrence, CWC executive director (South), S. Kumarvel, Dean, K.A.P.V. Government Medical College, MGMGH medical superintendent Udhaya Aruna and deputy superintendent Arun Raj.
