Colombia's Descent Back Into Violence
Colombian senator and opposition presidential candidate Miguel Uribe remains in critical condition in a Bogotá hospital after he was shot at a Saturday afternoon campaign rally in the capital. Colombians are praying for the 39-year-old father and for their own future, which looks to be descending again into the political violence of the past.
A teenage boy, alleged to be the gunman, has been detained and an investigation into the assault is underway. But skepticism is running high that the government will do much in response. President Gustavo Petro, a former M-19 guerrilla who uses incendiary rhetoric against his political adversaries on the right, doesn't inspire confidence.
