Rita Tresslar, a Custom Container Designer at Canoyer Garden Center, said it takes multiple people planting non stop to get all the plants ready. Boone to host fireworks convention this summer 'We have so much going on next door in our grow houses where seven or eight people are over there planting all day long and thousands and thousands of perennials, annuals and garden. Your garden needs all your veggies and things like that.' Tresslar said Mother's Day is when most of the plants grown now will be sold. 'Our biggest weekend is probably Mother's Day weekend, and that's when we try to encourage all of our customers to plant, take their baskets home,' Tresslar said. Boone to host fireworks convention this summer

BOONE, Iowa — The skies will light up over the Central Iowa Expo Grounds in August. This week, members of the Pyrotechnics Guild International were in Boone to work on planning their huge annual event that takes place August 2-8 at the Central Iowa Expo Grounds. PGI Inc. is an independent worldwide body of amateur and professional fireworks enthusiasts. The organization was founded in 1969, and has around 2,000 members. 'It's a fireworks club and we come together once a year,' said Connie Widmann, a member of PGI for around 25 years. 'We typically have between 1,700 and 2,000 members and families. We combine them together to come to that number who attend the one week event.' The group keeps track of the economic impact it has on a community, which is around $2.3 million dollars. People who are members and pay the convention fee can learn much about fireworks. Des Moines set to host first ever MASLW Champion Tournament 'You can learn how to make fireworks there are beginner classes that you can go to,' said Widmann. 'If you've never made something before and you can go to a class and learn, if you're interested in becoming a pyro-technician to set up public displays, we have courses for that type of licensing.' The event drew 2,300 attendees last year. This year's event will feature two evenings where members of the public can buy tickets and enjoy firework shows from a viewing area. 'On Sunday night we have multiple shows, they will be shows that you have never seen before in your life,' said Widmann. 'It will not be anything like any little town show that you've gone to see before, on Friday night we will have another public night, we called that our grand finale of the week.' The group has staged shows in Newton and Mason City before. They chose the Central Iowa Expo Grounds because it has lots of open space and air conditioned buildings for meetings and seminars during the event. Des Moines set to host first ever MASLW Champion Tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Soccer fans have the opportunity to see history in action at Buccaneer Arena with the debut of the MASLW playoffs. The announcement made Friday coincides with March being Women's History Month, and adds to the state's legacy of firsts for women with Des Moines hosting the tournament. To celebrate the landmark moment for women's sports, Mayor Connie Boesen was joined by soccer leaders and advocates at Buccaneer Arena, and spoke about how this weekend will inspire other young female athletes. Drake hires South Dakota State's Eric Henderson as next men's basketball head coach 'We look forward to the many years and the growth of your organization and the excitement that you bring because what I found as the first women Mayor is that young women look up to me understanding that anything is possible, and you will be doing that for a whole group of young women who thought maybe if they don't want to play outside, maybe this is a whole other avenue and more opportunities for people to play the sport that you love,' said Mayor Boesen. The owner of the Demon Hawks, Darwin Salas, spoke about how special hosting the tournament is for Des Moines. 'It's a dream come true, to be able to not only host the Major Arena Soccer League Women's first year in the making for the league with great competition, but being able to host it here in Des Moines.'
