No Reports Of Abandoned MyKiosk Stalls In Melaka

GENERAL MELAKA, May 16 (Bernama) -- There have been no reports of abandoned or unused stalls under the MyKiosk@KPKT initiative in Melaka, despite claims made elsewhere. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said demand for MyKiosk units in Melaka remains strong, particularly in areas under the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB). 'I'm not sure why the MyKiosk initiative is said to be failing in other places, but here in Melaka, the situation is under control. A few units may not have opened yet, but this isn't a major issue,' he said. He estimated that only 10 to 15 per cent of the stalls have yet to be occupied and expected these to be taken up soon. He pointed to a recent MBMB interview session that drew 75 applicants for just 30 available units as evidence of demand. Rais, also the Paya Rumput state assemblyman, was speaking to reporters after officiating the Teacher's Day celebration at Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya Rumput, where he presented the Alumni Teacher Recognition Award. He added that several units that appear closed are already allocated to traders who are still preparing to begin operations. The MyKiosk@KPKT initiative, led by the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), has previously faced criticism, with some labelling it a 'white elephant' project. However, Rais dismissed that characterisation, highlighting the programme's aim to support the B40 income group and small businesses by offering low-rent, standardised kiosks that are safe and functional. As of last December, 7,243 MyKiosk units had been approved across 133 local authorities nationwide, benefiting over 7,000 families by helping them boost their incomes.

Punjab, Bhakra board face off: CM Bhagwant Mann draws flak for questioning farmers' absence

BATHINDA: The farmer organisations and environmentalists, mainly those raising their voices against the contamination of Buddha Nullah, have expressed their anger over the outbursts of aimed at the farming community of Punjab. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The farmer organisations stated that the CM, through his outbursts, had shown his 'dislike' for the farmers and other activists who were fighting for the farming community and the water issues concerning the state. Mann, while addressing the protesters outside the office of the (MBMB) at Nangal on Sunday, said: 'Where are the farmer organisations now? They have not issued even a single statement for saving the water of Punjab, but we are not bothered, we will fight alone." Mann had made it clear that their (farmers) thinking was limited to holding sit-ins and disrupting the highways. 'They should have come here, but we have no need of them. They should come to us tomorrow; we are saving the water for their fields. They used to call themselves saviours of water, but where are the so-called saviours of water?' the CM asked. 'Sometimes they used to sit at Buddha Nullah and sometimes at other places. Now,they will also have to face opposition. It will not be me (Mann), but the public will oppose them. People will come to know who stands where in this fight for Punjab waters,' Mann had added. He also said the farmers did not visit the protest site here as there were no air-conditioned trolleys (trailers). 'Without AC, it is tough for them; this needs to be highlighted,' he added. Reacting to the CM's outbursts, Kirti Kisan Union leader Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala said: 'We held protests against the Dam Safety Act and against the BBMB in 2022, but the AAP govt did not take the Dam Safety Act seriously and now, Punjab is paying the price for it." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarvan Singh Pandher said: 'Farmers do not botherabout holding protests under the scorching sun in the summers or chilly winter nights for their rights, and using AC is not a sin as the CM too remains in the AC all the time. We regularly raise the water issue. The CM is misleading the public.' The Public Action Committee (PAC) Mattewara – a pro-environment organisation, in a sharp rebuttal to the CM's comments against Budda Dariya activists exposed his govt's 'hypocrisy and negligence'. The committee representatives stated: 'The CM has questioned our absence from the dharna site at Nangal. He also asked why we did not issue a statement on the issue. He (Mann) is lying. We have many times issued statements in support of the right of Punjab on its waters. Also, it is surprising as to why the CM expects activists and farmers to help him in his dharna when they are busy fixing problems created by him.' 'Our team is fighting multiple NGT cases against the Govt of Punjab, including those of illegal common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) and reverse boring by a distillery. The CM and his govt are not following even the NGT orders to shut the illegal CETPs. He has not ordered the permanent closure of a distillery despite its clear indictment by the Central Pollution Control Board for reverse boring polluted effluent into the groundwater. We don't have time for photo ops. We are fixing the mess this govt has created,' said committee members Amandeep Bains, Col J S Gill(retd), Kuldeep Singh Khaira, Kapil Dev, and Jaskirat Singh. The committee also took note of a post on social media by Mann on Saturday that the Rajasthan govt demanded water from Punjab's quota for the drinking needs of personnel from the defence forces who were on duty for national security. 'Whenever it is for national interest, Punjab never lags behind,' they said. The committee said the water through the Indira Gandhi canal goes via Satluj, mixed with effluents of Buddha Dariya. So, Punjab has provided heavily polluted water to our armed forces for their drinking water needs, which contains chemicals from dyeing and electroplating industries of Ludhiana, they added.

Pak Lah's love for crafts and Melaka remembered by state governor

AYER KEROH: Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam described the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as a people-centric leader who was always calm yet firm in his approach during his time leading the nation. Recalling his time with the former prime minister, Mohd Ali said Abdullah, affectionately known as Pak Lah, always prioritised the nation's interests and the well-being of the people. He said that during his tenure as chief minister when Abdullah was prime minister, many issues affecting the people of Melaka were resolved, including flood problems, with drainage upgrade projects being implemented promptly. He said this involved areas under the administration of the Melaka City Council (MBMB) Phase Two, covering borders from Kampung Duyung to Bukit Katil, Kampung Durian Daun to Sungai Melaka, and Kampung Chetty to Tengkera, with an allocation of RM80.96 million. "Abdullah also approved RM90.4 million for the beautification and cleaning of the Melaka River under Phases One and Four, covering the stretch from the Hang Tuah Bridge to the Hang Jebat Bridge, as well as RM188.2 million for the upgrading and extension of the runway at the Melaka International Airport in Batu Berendam," he said in his speech when officiating the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly at Seri Negeri today. Also present was Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. Mohd Ali said that in honour of Abdullah's iconic slogan 'Excellence, Glory, and Distinction' the state government built and named a building 'Kota Cemerlang' at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) intersection. "I also recall fond memories with the late Abdullah, who would often take the route from Alor Gajah town to Simpang Ampat after his duties in Melaka just to observe the roadside stalls selling handicrafts. "This was because Pak Lah had a great interest in handicrafts and batik. "During the final moments of his life, he managed to visit Melaka for a holiday with his wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah, visited the Istana Melaka with his family, and enjoyed cendol in Kampung Hulu by the Melaka River on Dec 10 last year."

Clothing designer tosses t-shirt into Melaka River, gets RM500 fine

PETALING JAYA: The Melaka Historical City Council (MBMB) recently imposed a RM500 fine on a clothing designer who previously went viral for throwing a counterfeit t-shirt into the Melaka River. Malaysia Gazette reported that Melaka mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said the authorities took the matter seriously, even though the act was intended as social media content for the designer's premises located at the Stadthuys Building. 'Even though the counterfeit clothes, which were described as rubbish, have been retrieved, there should have been another way to express anger — such as throwing the clothes into a rubbish bin,' Shadan was quoted as saying. Last Sunday, the council reportedly visited the designer's premises. Although the designer was not present at the time, they managed to contact him. The clothing designer admitted to his actions during the phone call. MBMB subsequently issued a Notice of Offence under Section 47(1)(a) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974. In the viral video, the man was upset after discovering that his designs had been copied and sold.
