Investors more bullish on MBSB Berhad (KLSE:MBSB) this week as stock advances 4.5%, despite earnings trending downwards over past five years
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But you can do a lot better than that by buying good quality businesses for attractive prices. For example, the MBSB Berhad (KLSE:MBSB) share price is 15% higher than it was five years ago, which is more than the market average. In stark contrast, the stock price has actually fallen 9.2% in the last year. After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals. We've discovered 2 warning signs about MBSB Berhad. View them for free. There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement. During five years of share price growth, MBSB Berhad actually saw its EPS drop 15% per year. Since the EPS are down strongly, it seems highly unlikely market participants are looking at EPS to value the company. Given that EPS is down, but the share price is up, it seems clear the market is focussed on other aspects of the business, at the moment. In fact, the dividend has increased over time, which is a positive. Maybe dividend investors have helped support the share price. The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image). This free interactive report on MBSB Berhad's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of MBSB Berhad, it has a TSR of 67% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return. We're pleased to report that MBSB Berhad shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 0.7% over one year. And that does include the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 11% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for MBSB Berhad that you should be aware of. Of course MBSB Berhad may not be the best stock to buy. Analysts Just Published A Bright New Outlook For MBSB Berhad's (KLSE:MBSB)
MBSB Berhad (KLSE:MBSB) shareholders will have a reason to smile today, with the analysts making substantial upgrades to this year's statutory forecasts. The consensus statutory numbers for both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) increased, with their view clearly much more bullish on the company's business prospects. Following the upgrade, the most recent consensus for MBSB Berhad from its three analysts is for revenues of RM1.9b in 2025 which, if met, would be a major 26% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to soar 41% to RM0.07. Prior to this update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of RM1.7b and earnings per share (EPS) of RM0.06 in 2025. There has definitely been an improvement in perception recently, with the analysts substantially increasing both their earnings and revenue estimates. See our latest analysis for MBSB Berhad With these upgrades, we're not surprised to see that the analysts have lifted their price target 5.6% to RM0.76 per share. Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. It's clear from the latest estimates that MBSB Berhad's rate of growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully, with the forecast 26% annualised revenue growth to the end of 2025 noticeably faster than its historical growth of 1.8% p.a. over the past five years. Compare this with other companies in the same industry, which are forecast to grow their revenue 6.3% annually. Factoring in the forecast acceleration in revenue, it's pretty clear that MBSB Berhad is expected to grow much faster than its industry. The biggest takeaway for us from these new estimates is that analysts upgraded their earnings per share estimates, with improved earnings power expected for this year. Fortunately, analysts also upgraded their revenue estimates, and our data indicates sales are expected to perform better than the wider market. Given that the consensus looks almost universally bullish, with a substantial increase to forecasts and a higher price target, MBSB Berhad could be worth investigating further. With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year.
