My plea to automakers—I really want some buttons, it makes driving easier

The MG Windsor takes the lack of buttons to another level. For example, there is no dedicated button to control the outside rear-view mirrors. You can adjust them through the steering wheel-mounted controls, but it takes some time to know how to do that. Also, the vehicle has no headlight controls on the stalk; you have to adjust that through the infotainment screen. But, to be fair, you can keep that permanently on automatic. And then the most notorious non-button function, which is for the curtain under the panoramic roof. You instead use voice commands to open and close the roof curtain or struggle through the settings menu. And you know what is most frustrating, there is a blanked out portion where such a control would be. But I do have one serious gripe with this car, and to be fair, it isn't just directed at the Windsor EV. And that is the lack of physical buttons for functions. Call me old fashioned, but I like a physical button. A week ago, I found myself in Guwahati to drive the MG Windsor EV Pro, an updated version of India's best-selling electric vehicle. A bigger battery, thus more range and some Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features. The drive up to and down from Shillong was quite memorable as a result, without the need to be in a state of panic due to range. I genuinely like the Windsor EV, as does the Indian consumer. The first 8,000 units of the car, which had an introductory price tag of Rs 17.5 lakh, sold out in a day. Each brand has its idiosyncrasies. As more brands get button starts for their vehicles, there is no consistency whatsoever in where these are located. The MG Windsor EV doesn't even have a start button—you literally open the car, select 'Drive' and go. But only after wearing your seatbelt, because the MG Windsor EV does not release the electronic parking brake until you belt up. But as I said, the lack of physical buttons isn't unique to the Windsor EV, although that is the most extreme example. I also recently drove the new Kia Carens Clavis, which has a switchable touch panel for media and air-conditioning controls. Really cool feature, but again, I genuinely appreciate buttons for air-conditioning, which ironically the Windsor EV actually has. Also read: My Hong Kong visit was a reality check. XPENG has taken the first step for a 'flying car' Makes driving easier But why do I have this love affair with buttons? I'll tell you why I like buttons, because I like to control aspects of the vehicle by touch without taking my eyes off the road. And as used as I am to using my Amazon Echo device or saying 'Hey Siri', somehow using voice commands on a car is not something I've become used to. Maybe it is because I change cars so often, and different car brands have wildly different voice command abilities. That said, maybe I will change my habits. I have become used to mainly driving automatics and the increasing electronics onboard supercomputer-like cars. But even supercomputers have buttons. They feel deliberate, like you are doing an action. So my plea to automakers is quite simple: I love technology, but I really want some buttons. It just makes driving easier. @kushanmitra is an automotive journalist based in New Delhi. Views are personal. (Edited by Theres Sudeep)

MG Windsor EV Pro Review: The Range Factor

Guwahati/Shillong (Anirban Mitra): On a drizzly morning, we set out towards the picturesque Umiam Lake in Shillong in the MG Windsor EV Pro. Guwahati and its outskirts had a bit of traffic. As we drove up and out of the city, the lush green hills and constantly changing clouds chased us. Our goal was simple. Soak in the serenity of the hills and drive the Pro variant in a 200-kilometre return trip to Guwahati to find out the range. MG Windsor EV Pro: What's Changed? The standard battery pack variant continues to exist, and the Pro slots in as a range-topping trim with 52.9 kWh of energy. The claimed range has shot up to 449 kilometres on a single charge. The bigger battery pack also takes a longer time to charge using a 7.4 kw AC wall box charger, filling it up in 9.5 hours. Another important update in vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-vehicle technology in the Pro variant, enabling powering of external gadgets and topping up other EVs using the Windsor EV Pro as a source. MG Windsor EV Pro: Feature Updates The Pro looks identical to the standard variant, barring a few cosmetic enhancements. There are three new colourways exclusive to the Windsor EV Pro. It also rides on bigger 18-inch wheels with their design looking more like an ICE-counterpart than an EV. Level-2 advanced driver assistance system (L2 ADAS) also features in the Windsor EV Pro, which is supposed to improve the safety factor of the MPV. The standard Windsor EV was always a handsomely packed vehicle with conveniences like panoramic sun roof, massive touchscreen, digital driver's display, wireless charging and quilted seats. The Pro variant carries forward all of those, however, the fabric colour of the seats are tweaked. Beige seats make the cabin appear more spacious and airy. MG Windsor EV Pro: Drive Dynamics and Real Range There are no changes to the powertrain. The Pro variant continues with a single motor setup, generating 136 horsepower and 200 Nm. The response from the motor is predictable, and the acceleration is gradual. The Pro variant is likely to be slower than the standard variants due to a bigger and heavier battery pack. The driver may choose to shift between the drive modes to alter the performance somewhat. There are three levels of regeneration as well; but strangely can't be shut off entirely. The Windsor EV Pro handles like a people mover. It's best suited for city commutes with occasional highway trips. On the twisted corners, the body roll was visible, and when driven spiritedly, throws the passengers to the edge of their seats. The ride quality is supple, and crossing road undulations are slow speed in comfortable. We drove the MG Windsor EV Pro for nearly 200 kilometres. The momentum during the downhill drive to Guwahati consumed lesser energy than the onward journey. We achieved an energy consumption of 6.6 km/kWh. Realistically speaking, the 52.9 kWh battery pack should offer you up to 360 kilometres in real world. MG Windsor EV Pro: Price and Verdict The Pro variant commands a Rs 1.5 lakh premium over the top-end standard variant, offering ADAS features and more range. MG Windsor EV Pro is priced at Rs 17.50 lakh (ex-showroom) and may witness a price hike in the near future. Also available under Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), the price for Windsor EV Pro starts at Rs 12.50 lakh (ex-showroom) with Rs 4.5 per kilometre as subscription charges. The Windsor EV Pro emerges as a sensible and comfortable electric choice in the segment, offering a good value-for-money factor for buyers.

MG Windsor EV real world range tested. Here's how far the EV can take you on a single charge

MG Windsor EV is powered by a 38 kWh battery pack. (HT Auto/Srinjoy Bal) Check Offers The MG Windsor EV Pro was recently launched with a starting price of ₹ 17.49 lakh, ex-showroom, which has now been increased to ₹ 18.09 lakh. One of the biggest changes to the Windsor Pro over the standard Windsor EV is the larger 52.9 kWh battery pack as compared to the 38 kWh battery pack that the Windsor EV gets. The Windsor Pro, equipped with a larger battery, boasts a claimed range of 449 km. In comparison, the standard Windsor EV, featuring a 38 kWh battery, offers a claimed range of 331 km. Typically, an EV's actual range is 70-80 per cent of the claimed figure. While a range test for the Windsor Pro is forthcoming, we tested the standard Windsor EV ahead of the Pro's launch to determine its real-world range. To find out, we conducted a real-world range test of the MG Windsor EV with a full-fledged round trip covering varied terrain, city traffic, rural roads, and highways. From bustling Delhi roads to the tight alleyways of Alwar, village stretches to Bharatpur, and tourist-packed zones of Fatehpur Sikri — the EV was put through a comprehensive range of scenarios. MG Windsor EV: Real-World Range Test The drive began with a 94 per cent state of charge and an odometer reading of 876 km. The drive included slow-moving city traffic, relatively smooth highway stretches, and challenging hilly terrain with several uphill and downhill sections. After covering multiple driving environments the trip meter reached 1088 km with the battery at 28 per cent. The car was then charged to 76 per cent and driven further until the battery again reached 28 per cent, this time at 1234 km. A second charge brought the level up to 80 per cent, and the drive concluded at 1386 km with 34 per cent remaining. Also Read : MG Windsor Pro bags over 8,000 bookings in 24 hours. Price hiked as introductory period ends In total, the car covered 510 km during this test, using the equivalent of 160 per cent of its battery capacity — or 60.8 kWh. The average energy efficiency stood at 8.39 km per kWh. When calculated against the Windsor's 38 kWh battery, the real-world range works out to roughly 319 km on a full charge. That's about 96 per cent of the company's claimed figure — an impressive result given the variety of driving conditions encountered during the test.
