The special operations team of Telangana police had arrested six persons while they were trafficking different kinds of drugs worth approximately Rs 2 crore near Kukatpally area in Hyderabad on Monday.
The arrested include Gunasekhar (40), a constable attached to Tirupati armed reserve police, U Surendra (31) from Tirupati rural, contractor D Haribabu Reddy, and three others belonging to different parts of the state.
Gunasekhar was in possession of 840 grams of cocaine and other drugs and some cash when he was arrested.
After reports linking the police constable and Tirupati MP went viral on various social media platforms as Gunasekhar worked as a gunman for Gurumoorthy in the past, the YSRCP leader clarified that Gunasekhar is no longer his gunman and now works in the armed reserve unit in Tirupati after he was surrendered back to the police dept.
Condemning the allegations, he accused the ruling TDP of unleashing a smear campaign against him while asserting that he has no involvement in any kind of drug trafficking activities.
"TDP promised a drugs-free Andhra Pradesh within 100 days of coming to power in the state but the ground reality is their own police force is indulging in drug trafficking activities which has been proved with the arrest of the armed reserve constable. I will initiate legal proceedings against those involved in the smear campaign against me," he warned, while adding that he will seek a central agency probe into the case to prove his innocence and to bring the real culprits involved to light.
