(File Pic) Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025: Menstrual Hygiene, one of the most vital components of women's empowerment, is much more than just the use of sanitary napkins and clean toilets. It determines the overall well-being of all menstruating women around the world. Menstrual hygiene is a fundamental right of every woman and their dignity. Hence, Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated annually on May 28 to make people aware of the importance of good menstrual hygiene management (MHM). Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025: Theme Instead of picking up a theme for every year, the Menstrual Hygiene Day awareness campaign has already embarked on a long-term mission. The aim behind the special day is to make more and more people aware of menstrual hygiene so as to turn routine practices of menstruation into part of normal life by 2030. Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025: History Menstrual Hygiene Day was observed for the first time on May 28, 2014. It was initiated in 2012 by several organisations involved in public health with a mission to break the taboos of society regarding MHM. Why Social Media Deserves Credit For The Day? In 2013, a German-based NGO named WASH United began a 28-day social media campaign to generate awareness about the same. They pointed towards grassroots-level issues like sanitation and hygiene on various social media platforms like Twitter, garnering a considerable amount of positive feedback from the netizens. Finally, on May 28, 2014, many people around the world celebrated the day for the first time with rallies, exhibitions, movie screenings, workshops and speeches, as well as many such hashtag campaigns on social media. These initiatives also helped the men tackle the social stigma and help the menstruating ladies embrace the cycle as pride instead of shame, as per a report by Wayback Machine. Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025: Significance Various celebrations are carried out on this day to create a world, where everyone who menstruates, feels confident. Furthermore, open discussions about menstrual hygiene promote gender equality. MHD empowers people and helps in busting any myths and misconceptions about periods. The day is also an important way to raise awareness of period poverty and the need for various hygienic products like sanitary napkins or private places to menstruate. What Activities Are Done To Promote Awareness Of Menstrual Hygiene? The following practices are followed in order to celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day and promote awareness about the same — Expert-led educational webinars are organised to promote the well-being of menstruating women and girls. Workshops promote the usage of sustainable menstrual products without any shame. Panel discussions involving healthcare professionals and activists, as well as policymakers and the common public, are hosted to look into remote places that need more focus for the awareness of menstrual hygiene. Community participation, like rallies or campaigns on social media, to promote awareness of the same. Period-friendly toilets and access to period products should also be checked regularly. MPS lead crisis: Community leaders call for change outside clinic

The Brief Milwaukee Public Schools is in the midst of an ongoing lead hazard crisis. Community leaders called for change outside a North Division screening clinic. The health department is tasked with tackling the growing lead problem. MILWAUKEE - Community leaders gathered outside North Division High School on Wednesday afternoon, calling for changes in the city, county, health department and school district amid an ongoing Milwaukee Public Schools lead hazard crisis. "To advance policies that prioritize prevention of lead in children, whether in the school, the home, the water, the soil which folks are growing food to eat, and shift from a test-and-treat model to primary prevention," said Melody McCurtis, a Metcalfe Park neighborhood resident. FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX LOCAL Mobile app for iOS or Android What they're saying The Milwaukee Health Department is tasked with tackling the growing lead problem in MPS schools and bringing its facilities back into compliance after several lead closures and likely more to come. "Based on our investigation, we're prioritizing lead paint and lead dust," said Milwaukee Health Commissioner Mike Totoraitis. "They have to return to compliance. That, inherently, is going to be a reactive process." MHD is looking at school buildings built before 1978, prioritizing elementary schools as the age group most at risk for lead exposure. The scope of the problem is overwhelming. "We're an old city with a lot of deeply-rooted challenges," said Tyler Weber, Milwaukee's deputy commissioner of environmental health. Those challenges include redlining, disinvestment, old construction and lack of staffing. SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News By the numbers Wednesday's lead screening clinic at North Division had the capacity to test 300 children. If there are positive tests, the challenge is to determine where that possible exposure occurred. There are tens of thousands of children who live in Milwaukee, with 70,000 MPS students among them. Each year in the city, more than 1,200 kids test positive for lead poisoning with an average age of 3 years old. But many more children are not getting tested, which means there are likely many more MPS students who have lead poisoning and don't know it. So far, more than 1,400 children have been tested – including nearly 400 MPS students. Of that, the health department is investigating five potential lead poisonings. It's still unclear if that exposure happened in the home or at school. What's next Without additional funding or help from the federal government to hire more staff and expand the scope of the testing to be proactive, MHD said this is the most effective solution right now. "It is a critical step in better understanding the potential exposure that students might have experienced in the school," said Totoraitis.
