Hillsborough County man turns $5 into $1 million after buying scratch-off at Publix
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Hillsborough County man's trip to Publix earned him a $1 million prize from a scratch-off game.
The Florida Lottery announced that 67-year-old Roger Shackelford of Valrico claimed a $1 million top prize from the MILLIONAIRE MAKER scratch-off game at the Lottery's Tampa District Office. He chose to receive his winnings as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $640,000.

Shackelford bought the winning ticket at the Publix located at 3461 Lithia Pinecrest Road in Valrico. The store will receive a $2,000 bonus commission for selling the winning ticket.
The $5 scratch-off game, MILLIONAIRE MAKER, launched in May 2024 and features six top prizes of $1 million. However, the Florida Lottery's website shows there is only one top prize remaining.
The game's overall odds of winning are 1-in-3.99.
