Rs 25,000 fine on 2 house surgeons of med college for ragging
1 2 Berhampur: Authorities of MKCG Medical College here have imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on two house surgeons for allegedly ragging a fourth-year MBBS student. The action was taken by the college's anti-ragging committee in its meeting held on Monday "We received a complaint from the anti-ragging cell about a fourth-year student facing ragging from the house surgeons on May 12. Based on the complaint, the anti-ragging committee held a meeting to discuss the complaint. After thorough discussions, the committee has decided to impose a fine of Rs 25,000 each on the house surgeons involved in the incident," said Suchitra Dash, college principal. An internal inquiry found the victim was not physically assaulted. "They psychologically harassed the student," she said. The complainant said he had informed the college dean about the ragging incident on May 13. Subsequently, some of his classmates, hostel union members and some house surgeons threatened him to withdraw the complaint. They also threatened to boycott him if he did not withdraw the complaint. The anti-ragging cell wrote to the college authorities to identify and counsel the victim so that he feels safe. SP (Berhampur), Saravana Vivek M, said they are conducting a separate inquiry into the incident. "We will register a case if the incident turns out to be serious as per ragging guidelines," he said.

Home Guard fitness test turns fatal for 2 aspirants in Odisha, 4 fall ill
Two Home Guard job aspirants died and four others fell ill while appearing for the physical fitness test in Odisha's Gajapati district on Thursday. The two aspirants who died were identified as Sulanta Misal, a native of Parisal village, and Deepak Padal from Narayanpur village. According to police, the physical test was conducted by the district police at Betaguda in Ranipeetha, and the candidates had to complete a two-km run. After completing the run, Misal collapsed and was rushed to the Paralakhemundi district headquarters hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Padal was among several candidates who fell ill after appearing for the test and were immediately rushed to the Paralakhemundi hospital. When Padal's condition deteriorated, he was rushed to the MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, where he died in the evening. Misal, the only son of Pramila, a widow, was in his final year of graduation. To support his family and carry forward his studies, he also practised tailoring. 'My son had promised that he would clear the test and get the job. But he never returned. I have no one else in this world,' said Pramila. The Gajapati police filed two unnatural death cases and are conducting an inquiry into the deaths. Officials said that over 1,000 male candidates and 200 female candidates participated in the physical test for the Home Guard recruitment drive. The male candidates are required to complete the two-km run in 10 minutes, and the female candidates are required to complete it in 12 minutes. Expressing concern over the death of two candidates, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to their families. In March, a 19-year-old aspirant died while appearing for the physical endurance test during a Home Guard recruitment drive in Deogarh district. Earlier in that month, two engineers and another youth had died during a 25-km walking test as part of a physical fitness examination for recruitment to the posts of foresters and forest guards.

27-year-old rapes, murders 4-year-old relative in Odisha; Arrested
Bhubaneswar: A 27-year-old man was arrested in Odisha's Ganjam district for allegedly raping and murdering his 4-year-old girl distant relative, whose body was recovered from an under-construction house on Saturday, Police said. 'The man, a distant relative of the girl who went missing on Friday evening, has been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012,' Ganjam superintendent of police (SP) Suvendu Patra said. The accused had allegedly lured the girl with a chocolate and told her he was taking her to a festival in their village. 'But he instead took her to an isolated place and attempted to rape her. He killed her by throttling her and then dumped the body. He was under the influence of liquor,' the SP said. After a missing complaint was lodged, the police started investigating. A forensic team and dog squad with several seniors police officers visited the crime site and collected more evidence. The accused was reported seen with the girl and the locals said that he used to often offer chips and toffees to the girl,' the SP added. According to preliminary investigation, the accused was allegedly under the influence of alcohol on April 25 evening. 'He had watched porn on his mobile phone before luring the girl. 'The exact cause of the death would be ascertained only after we get the autopsy report,' the SP said. 'We are investigating all angles and interrogating villagers suspected of involvement in the gruesome incident,' the SP added.
