LSU baseball star goes No. 1 overall in latest MLB.com mock draft
LSU baseball star goes No. 1 overall in latest mock draft After a strong outing in the Baton Rouge Regional, LSU baseball pitcher Kade Anderson continues to fly up the draft board. In latest mock draft, Anderson is the No. 1 overall pick, heading to the Washington Nationals. "The lefty is athletic, throws strikes and has a legit four-pitch mix. With all of his stuff ticking up in the Regional, it looks like he still has plenty in the tank, checking off the durability box. Oh, he'll also have just turned 21 before the Draft as a sophomore-eligible prospect," wrote Jonathan Mayo. Anderson has been projected as a first-round pick all year and became a consensus projected top-10 pick in April. Now, Anderson is in the discussion to be the top overall pick. If Anderson goes No. 1, he'll be the second LSU pitcher in three years to do so. In 2023, the Pittsburgh Pirates picked Skenes with the top pick. The same year, the Nationals picked LSU outfielder Dylan Crews No. 2 overall. Anderson would have a chance to join Crews in Washington. In 96 innings, Anderson has a 3.28 ERA to go along with 156 strikeouts. Anderson is a draft-eligible sophomore and is enjoying a breakout year after working as a releiver in 2024. After Anderson, Mayo slotted Tennessee pitcher Liam Doyle going No. 2 overall. Anderson's next outing is expected to come on Saturday in Game 1 of the Baton Rouge Super Regional vs. West Virginia, though LSU has not officially announced its rotation.

Ex-Marlins exec David Samson rips Royals' Jac Caglianone call-up: ‘single-most irresponsible move'
Jac Caglianone's Royals promotion has been called into question by former Miami Marlins president David Samson. While many Kansas City fans were elated that Caglianone, No. 10 prospect, was promoted to the show, Samson had the complete opposite reaction. 'What Kansas City has done is the single-most irresponsible move I've seen in quite a long a time,' Samson said on CBS Sports HQ on Tuesday. The gripe, however, has nothing to do with the 22-year-old's readiness for the big leagues. 4 Jac Caglianone at bat for Kansas City's Triple-A affilate the Omaha Storm Chasers AP 'If he's going to be that good, how do you call him up now where he will hit arbitration a full year earlier than if they waited until after around June 17?,' Samson continued. By calling up Caglianone now instead of the Super Two deadline, Kansas City burn a year of team control of its star prospect. The Royals would have gained an extra season had they waited a little bit longer, with this move instead speeding up that clock. If Caglianone finishes in the top two of the Rookie of the Year voting he would get a full year of service anyway, but that is far from a given. While this might not be a significant issue for teams with higher payrolls, such as the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers, small-market teams like the Royals often need to be more strategic in managing their limited payrolls. 4 David Samson did not agree with the Royals' decision. @CBSSports/X 'I have no idea how a team that's not in the top-10 of payroll is not paying attention to dates,' Samson said. 'And the Royals forcing the issue, that's a bunch of horse hockey. You take the extra two weeks because it gives you an extra year and compounds itself in arbitration. 'This a $10 million decision they made. He better be Vladimir Guerrero Sr. and he better start now.' 4 Joc Caglianone made his Royals debut Tuesday. Getty Images Though the main argument from Samson is logical from long-term and financial views, it seemingly does not take into account the position the Royals are in today. After reaching the playoffs for the first time in eight years last season, the Royals are looking to carry that success into this campaign Kansas City is in the midst of another tight playoff race, entering Wedneday's slate one game out of a wild card spot and 7 1/2 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central. 4 Caglianone in his first career at bat in the second inning of yesterday's game. Jeff Curry-Imagn Images The Royals need offensive help, having scored the third-fewest runs in the sport, and Caglianone could make the lineup more menacing. The young lefty slashed an impressive .319/.370/.723 with an 1.093 OPS spanning 12 games with Triple-A Omaha, which included six home runs and 13 RBIs. He posted a cumulative .322/.394/.553 slash line with a .947 OPS including his time in Double-A. In his first game in the major leagues on Tuesday, Caglianone went 0-for-5 as the Royals' designated hitter If Caglianone can carry over his torrid hitting into the majors, he could become a key asset in the Royals' chase toward back-to-back playoff appearances.

Padres eyeing Red Sox All-Star Jarren Duran as potential trade target
The Padres have eyes on Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. The 28-year-old is is on San Diego's 'list of trade targets' according to The Athletic, as the team looks to bolster its offense, which has struggled to produce consistently. Per the report, the underperforming Red Sox (29-32) 'might consider Duran expendable,' especially with outfielder Roman Anthony — top overall prospect — dominating in Triple-A (.303 average, .922 OPS) and appearing ready for promotion to the big leagues. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Sheets had been one of the Padres' most productive hitters to start the year with a team-high 34 RBIs, plus a .267 average and 11 home runs. But the Padres will also have to consider saving trade capital to pick up starting pitching, with starters Yu Darvish and Michael King on the injured list. Advertisement Their front office, headed by president of baseball operations A.J. Preller, will have to choose a direction ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Duran, a lefty hitter known for his speed on the bases, enjoyed a career year with Boston in 2024, winning All-Star Game MVP and hitting .285 with 75 RBIs and 21 homers. This season, he's hitting .264 with 34 RBIs through 60 games, maintaining his value as an above-average outfielder — even if his stats have taken a dip from last season's breakout campaign. Cardinals' Heralded Prospect Drops Off Top 100 List Amid Absence
After starting the season on the 60-day IL, St. Louis Cardinals former top-100 prospect Tink Hence has fallen out of Top 100 Prospect List. Sam Dykstra covered the updated list, mentioning Hence as one of three prospects dropping out of the top 100. Advertisement "Hence really needed a healthy 2025," Dykstra wrote. He highlighted that Hence has yet to throw more than 96 innings in a full season due to his yearly struggle with injuries since joining the Cardinals' organization, writing, "As good as the stuff has looked, he needs to show he can stick to the mound to regain more solid Top 100 consideration." St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Tink Hence in a spring relief appearance on February 25, 2025. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images Coming into the season, Hence was sitting at No. 76 on the Top 100 List, but according to Dykstra, the news of the righty sustaining a right rib cage strain during spring training was enough to take him out of consideration for the list. The 22-year-old only totaled 20 starts for Double-A Springfield in 2024, but carried a 2.71 ERA with 109 strikeouts through 79 2/3 innings of work. Advertisement If Hence could work past the injuries, he could be something special, but it may be a while before Cardinals' fans see the flame-thrower in an MLB uniform until then. Other Cardinals in the Top 100 Cardinals top prospect JJ Wetherholt jumped from No. 23 to No. 20 on the list after starting the year with a .290 average in his first 22 games for the Double-A Cardinals. The 22-year-old shortstop has scored 12 times, walked 11 times, knocked in 10 runs, and picked up four doubles and a home run in just 78 at-bats so far this year. Although the team's No. 2 prospect Quinn Mathews hasn't seen action with Triple-A Memphis since April 11, the southpaw moved from No. 45 to No. 40 on the list. The 24-year-old pitched to a 6.10 ERA in three April starts, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and 15 in 10 1/3 innings before hitting the 7-day IL on April 13. Cardinals Provide Encouraging Update on Rising Young Slugger
The St. Louis Cardinals are one step closer to regaining one of their most electric bats from the early part of the season. According to John Denton, catcher Iván Herrera will travel to Memphis today to begin a rehab assignment with the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate. Manager Oli Marmol told reporters that Herrera will go through pregame workouts with the Redbirds and is scheduled to DH for five innings on Thursday, followed by five innings behind the plate on Friday. Both games will be against the Louisville Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Advertisement Herrera sustained a left knee injury in the third inning of the opening game of a day-night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox. After coming up limping after running out a foul pop-up, he had to be assisted off the field by Marmol and training staff. Since then, Pedro Pagés has taken over the bulk of the catching duties, while Yohel Pozo was called up from Memphis to serve as the backup. Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera (48) has a cooler poured on him after he hit three home runsJeff Curry-Imagn Images The 24-year-old backstop was off to a scorching start in 2025, slashing .381/.458/1.048 with four home runs and 11 RBIs across just 22 plate appearances. Earlier this month, Herrera became the first catcher in franchise history to hit three home runs in a single game—an early-season accomplishment that showed his potential to breakout. Advertisement Herrera's return could bring a much-needed offensive spark to a Cardinals team that has struggled to match their strong pitching outings with consistent hitting production to start the season. Despite missing most of April, the Panama native remains tied for the team lead in home runs with four, which is a clear sign of his early impact and the club's offensive struggles. If his rehab assignment goes as expected, Cardinals fans can look forward to Herrera potentially rejoining the big-league roster in early May.
