Cubs-Angels Trade Idea Sends Tyler Anderson to Chicago

Despite having multiple injuries to their frontline starters, the Chicago Cubs are off to an impressive 22-17 record, and they sit in first place in the National League Central. Lefty starter Justin Steele is lost for the season, and Shota Imanaga, who is off to a 3-2 start in 2025 with a 2.82 ERA and 34 strikeouts, was just sent to the Injured List. Advertisement The Cubs' starting rotation is now filled with either young starters who don't have much big league experience, or veterans who aren't true aces. This has led to some murmurs about Chicago looking to trade for a frontline starter. The Cubs may be able to hold their own in the NL Central, but if they want to be a true competitor, they will need to add to their staff somehow. In this trade pitch, the Cubs would acquire starter Tyler Anderson from the Los Angeles Angels in return for reliever Julian Merryweather and a top prospect in Kevin Alcántara. Vasquez-Imagn Images Anderson is a two-time All-Star and appears to be in the prime of his career. He was a late bloomer, but the 35-year-old would be a great fill-in piece to help stabilize the Cubs' rotation. The Angels had a solid start to 2025, but things have evened out, and they may not compete this season. Advertisement This trade provides a great opportunity for the Angels to get a solid prospect in Alcántara, who could be called up this season and get real reps. As for Chicago, they already have a full outfield, and there might not be room for Alcántara in the next couple of years. Related: Cubs Get Excellent Update on Justin Steele Trade Replacement

Seattle Mariners Trade Struggling Pitcher to Orioles After Recent DFA

While the Baltimore Orioles are in dire need of pitching depth, the same can not be said of the Seattle Mariners. The two teams could not be any more different when it comes to the abilities of their pitching staffs, and they came together on a trade late Wednesday night. The Mariners sent Luis F. Castillo, whom they recently designated for assignment, to the Orioles for cash considerations. Baltimore optioned the pitcher to Triple-A after the deal was announced. Castillo, 30, does not have much experience in the Major Leagues. He has pitched in only five games at that level in his career, three in relief for the Detroit Tigers in 2022, and two starts this year for Seattle. Advertisement In those outings, the pitcher has tallied 10.2 innings while pitching to a 5.06 ERA with nine strikeouts. He served as a depth piece for the Mariners while they have been dealing with injuries to other starters like Logan Gilbert and George Kirby. His outings with Seattle were not great this year, as most of the earned runs he has allowed in his MLB career came from those two starts. He carries a 7.71 ERA across seven innings to Baltimore with five strikeouts and a 2.71 WHIP. It is an interesting trade, as now the Mariners may have more cash available to make some moves at the 2025 MLB trade deadline. For the Orioles, they now have more pitching depth. It was highly unlikely that Seattle would need Castillo to fill in again this season, and this move gives him the opportunity to pitch more regularly and have a better chance of sticking in the Majors.
