Brand Bengaluru: Urban Village Square initiative expanded across city

Bengaluru: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is forging ahead with its 'Brand Bengaluru' initiative by developing a network of "Urban Village Squares" and other neighbourhood-scale public spaces to promote walkability, local identity, and community interaction. As part of this effort, five urban village spaces have already been completed — at Brigade Road Junction, Basaveshwara Circle (Mourya Junction), Shivananda Circle (below the flyover), Race Course Road, and Anand Rao Circle. A sixth site, near the BHEL Circle on Mysuru Road, is currently under development. "At Race Course Road junction, the theme is pedestrian safety, and we focused on pedestrian improvements. At Brigade Road, the concept is centred around a war memorial," M Lokesh, special commissioner (projects - central), told TOI. "These themes are chosen after holding public consultations and considering what suits the locality best. Each design goes through multiple iterations before being finalised," he added. Speaking about the upcoming space at BHEL Circle on Mysuru Road, Lokesh said, "We are incorporating elements of Channapatna Bombe (toy) to symbolise the cultural connection between Mysuru and the people of Bengaluru." The overarching aim, he said, is to create inclusive and inviting spaces for people to relax and spend time in — a core vision of the Brand Bengaluru initiative. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The redesign of the five completed junctions cost around Rs 10 crore, with an average execution timeline of three months per junction. To expand the initiative further, BBMP launched a city-wide citizen engagement campaign, inviting residents to nominate potential public spaces in their neighbourhoods. Citizens can choose from 13 predefined categories — including kattes and urban village squares — to suggest locations that can be mapped and developed in future phases. Once nominated, the sites will be assessed for feasibility. Only suitable locations will proceed to design tenders and architectural competitions. Costs and materials will be determined at the design stage to allow site-specific adaptability. BBMP has already funded two neighbourhood-scale public spaces and identified two more under its Urban Revamp Design Challenge, which invited architects to reimagine public spaces. Insights from these pilots are now being scaled city-wide, with typical implementation timelines ranging from 6 to 9 months after the design phase. The classification of these public space categories was developed with inputs from urban design experts at Sensing Local and the Indian Institute of Urban Designers (Karnataka), ensuring both contextual relevance and design quality.

Residency Road white-topping will throw Bengaluru's central business district traffic out of gear

Bengaluru: Traffic in central Bengaluru is expected to be disrupted with BBMP starting its white-topping work on Residency Road. The project — covering the 280-metre stretch from Ashirvadam Junction (near St Joseph's PU College) to Opera Junction (near Brigade Road) — began on May 8 and is expected to continue until May 31. The work is anticipated to cause major congestion in the central business district (CBD), affecting Residency Road, Richmond Road, Convent Road, St Mark's Road, Anil Kumble Circle, Nanjappa Circle, Hosur Road, and surrounding areas. Vehicle users are advised to plan alternative routes and allow for extra travel time. Evidence of the disruption was already seen last weekend when the CBD experienced heavy traffic congestion during rain on Saturday evening, with vehicles stuck for several minutes. Slow-moving traffic continued on Sunday evening as well. BBMP decided to undertake white-topping after the stretch, previously built under the TenderSure project, suffered from waterlogging and developed multiple potholes. Traffic police have issued an advisory about traffic arrangements to ensure smooth vehicular flow in and around the affected areas. A senior police officer explained the timing of the project: "The area has many schools. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo Permission was given to BBMP to carry out work because schools were on summer vacation. The timing was specifically chosen to prevent disruption to students." Allaying concerns about potential delays affecting school-goers and worsening traffic in the area, M Lokesh, chief engineer (projects), said: "We plan to finish the work in 10-15 days. We'll definitely stick to the deadline." Ashok Nagar traffic inspector Seema VS has taken proactive measures to expedite the work. For example, she has asked that cement loads be increased so that work can be completed quickly, giving time for curing and other related activities. The inspector has also arranged for doubling the workforce on the project, ensuring 24x7 operations. Permission was granted only after reviewing the day-to-day work progress plan, with clear terms and conditions documented. One condition stipulates that a BBMP engineer must be present at the workplace at all times. Also, police, quoting IMD, said showers are expected only for the next couple of days, and the project won't face any rain-related delays. In case BBMP requires additional time to complete white-topping work at the junction, police will only permit work from Saturday night through Sunday, with the road to be reopened to traffic by Monday morning.
