The next two ceremonies are set to take place in Manchester due to the area's rich musical heritage. It's the latest awards ceremony to leave the capital and move up north. After decades calling London home, the annual BRIT Awards are packing their bags and heading northwards for the 2026 and 2027 ceremonies. As one of the biggest award ceremonies on the musical calendar, organizers have confirmed that fans in Manchester will now not have to take the train to the capital, with the Co-op Live arena set to be the new home for the next two years. As Jason Iley, Chair and CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland, stated, the city 'perfectly captures the spirit and energy' of the event. Iley further cited that the move would help 'build on the Brits legacy of celebrating and reinvesting in world-class music.' His sentiment was echoed by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who highlighted the area's 'unparalleled music heritage': 'Celebrating the Brit awards right here in the home of 24-hour party people is the next chapter in its story and you can be sure that we will help them do it in style.' Deaf choir felt 'brave' to sing at MOBO Awards in Newcastle
A deaf choir who signed a music video which was played at the MOBO Awards have said they felt "proud and brave".Thirteen students from Jesmond's Northern Counties school performed at the ceremony in Newcastle on MOBO Awards was founded in 1996 and celebrates black culture and music in the UK and Liam said he would "remember it for the rest of my life", while pupil Kameron said "to feel included was great". Arya Starr became the first African woman to win best international act as well as the first woman to be recognised as best African music act in 16 years, while Central Cee made history by becoming the first artist to win the best male act award three Counties School, part of the Percy Hedley Foundation, is a specialist school for children with disabilities aged three to 19 years students recorded a video to God Gave Me Feet For Dancing by Ezra Collective which was played to the musicians in the Utilita pupils were among other local schools invited by Newcastle and Gateshead councils to get involved in the video and eight of the 13 attended the awards. Liam, 15, said he "felt proud and brave to be a part of it", adding that the "atmosphere was buzzing".Sophie, 17, who also went to the awards, said she felt "included".Kameron, 14, said he was not involved in things previously because of his autism and added it was "great to be included".Choir leader Mandy Davison said: "The attendance of our students at the MOBO Awards highlighted the importance of inclusivity, proving to the students that their talent deserves a spotlight, no matter their differences."The MOBOs coming to Newcastle is a fantastic moment for the North East, and having our students in the spotlight makes it even more special." Central Cee makes MOBO history by becoming first artist to win Best Male Act three times
Central Cee has made history at the MOBO Awards, which celebrate Black music and culture, becoming the first artist to win Best Male Act three times. The West London rapper now holds seven MOBO trophies - tying with Stormzy as the most decorated rapper in the awards' history. His reaction? Understated as ever. While not present at the ceremony, which took place in Newcastle, he posted a screenshot of the announcement on Instagram, captioning it: 'that's nice.' Last month, Cench dropped his highly anticipated debut album, Can't Rush Greatness, which debuted at No.1 on the UK Albums Chart (read our review of it here). He's also up for three BRIT Awards, including Best Artist and Song of the Year. Bashy, returning after a 15-year hiatus, took home Best Album and Best Hip-Hop Act. Darkoo beat out heavyweights like Raye and Jorja Smith to claim Best Female Act, while Nigerian star Ayra Starr made history as the first African woman to win Best International Act and the first woman in 16 years to take home Best African Music Act. Meanwhile, dancehall legend Vybz Kartel, recently freed after his murder conviction was overturned, was honoured with the MOBO Impact Award - and he's already gearing up for a major comeback, with a Wireless Festival performance confirmed for this summer. Other genre awards saw 2023 Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective named Best Jazz Act, Scorcher win Best Grime Act, Pozer take Best Drill Act, and TSHA claim Best Electronic/Dance Act. Prince's Purple Rain debut film joins Newcastle's MOBO celebrations
Films celebrating Black musicians on film are being featured at a city cinema as part of the MOBO Awards fringe festival. As Newcastle gears up for the big awards night - an event billed as Europe's biggest celebration of Black music and culture - which it be hosting this Tuesday for the first time, excitement is building about its line-up of nominees and special guests. And, as previously reported, a fringe festival is also taking place around it to keep that momentum going. The city centre's Tyneside Cinema has also joined forces with the MOBO fringe festival, with its own focus upon Black music talent - this time in film. And on its Original Genius programme this February will be the iconic 1984 rock musical Purple Rain which starred Prince in his acting debut. Now fans will be able to re-live the Purple Rain experience at Tyneside Cinema on February 23 and 27 when there will be screenings at 5pm and 3pm respectively, and there is still some ticket availability. The Tyneside's Original Genius programme of 'ground-breaking artists and iconic performances' also includes Summer of Soul this Monday, a documentary featuring long-lost footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, and Space is the Place - a sci-fi blend of concept album and film by Sun Ra - on Wednesday. The cinema also has been running Beyond the Screen: a programme of MOBO-inspired workshops intended to encourage young people to create music videos, with involvement from local experts from filmmakers to producers, editors and designers.
