30 domestic worker agencies penalized in UAE for refund, salary violations
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has taken legal action against 30 domestic worker recruitment agencies in the UAE during the first quarter of 2025. These agencies were found to have violated labor rules meant to protect employers and workers. A total of 89 violations were recorded. Of these, 86 cases involved agencies failing to refund all or part of recruitment fees to employers within the legal deadline. This refund is required when the recruitment service fails or is canceled. Other violations included one agency not clearly showing the approved pricing of service packages, and two agencies not using the Wage Protection System (WPS) properly to pay salaries or commissions to their employees. MOHRE reminded the public to only deal with licensed domestic worker agencies to ensure their rights are protected. A complete list of approved agencies is available on the MOHRE website: Anyone with complaints about refund delays or violations can contact MOHRE at 80040. The ministry assured the public that all feedback is taken seriously and action will be taken if laws are broken.

When can your job contract end in the UAE? Here's what MoHRE says
Whether you're a first-time OFW in the UAE or someone who's been working here for years, it's important to know when and why your work contract can legally end. Sometimes, it's expected, like when you resign or your contract expires. But there are also less obvious situations that can lead to contract termination. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), here are nine official reasons a work contract can end in the UAE, based on Federal Decree Law No. (33) of 2021: Mutual agreement – If both you and your employer agree to end the contract, then it's valid. Contract expiration – If your limited-time contract ends and isn't renewed, it's automatically over. One party requests termination – You or your employer can end the contract, as long as the proper legal steps and notice period are followed. Death of employer – If your work depends directly on the employer and they pass away, the contract ends. Death or disability of the employee – If the employee dies or is permanently disabled and can no longer work, the contract is terminated. It should be substantiated by a certificate issued by a medical authority. Imprisonment – If the worker gets a final court conviction that results in a prison term of 3 months or more, the job ends automatically. Permanent closure of the company – If the business shuts down permanently and this is confirmed by the authorities, contracts are terminated. Bankruptcy or economic reasons – If the employer can no longer operate due to financial loss or exceptional events, contracts may end. Failure to renew work permit – If the employee can't renew their work permit (for reasons not their fault), the contract ends. Knowing these reasons helps protect your rights and lets you understand what to expect. If you experience any of these, you're not alone—and most of them are backed by proper legal steps. If unsure, consult MOHRE or your HR team for guidance.

MOHRE: Employers must pay for treatment of work injuries, occupational diseases
The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) reminded employers that they are responsible for paying for the treatment of their workers in case of work injuries or illnesses. MOHRE posted the reminder through its official Facebook page as part of its efforts to raise awareness among workers and companies. According to MOHRE, if a worker suffers from a work injury or an occupational disease, the employer must cover the full cost of treatment and compensate the worker accordingly. MOHRE's website defines occupational diseases as health problems caused by work conditions, meaning the illness 'must have developed due to exposures in the workplace.' Examples of these are lung issues from construction dust or hearing problems from loud factory machines. The compensation amount for the injured worker is based on their last basic salary. MOHRE clarified that workers should receive their compensation within 10 days after a medical report is issued stating the degree of their disability, if any. In case of an incident, the employer must notify the medical authorities, the local police station in their area, and the Ministry itself. The Ministry must be informed within 48 hours after the employer, or their legal representative, becomes aware of a suspected occupational disease or injury. Failure to report work-related injuries, deaths, or occupational diseases will result in a fine of AED 10,000 per case and the suspension of the facility's operations.

Jobless in UAE? You may be eligible for unemployment compensation
UAE and other Arab states condemned the Israel attack on Iran. PHOTO: AFP Listen to article Workers in the UAE who have recently lost their jobs can now submit claims for compensation under the country's Unemployment Insurance Scheme, provided they have been subscribed for at least 12 consecutive months. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), eligible workers must file their claim within 30 days of termination through the official website of the Involuntary Loss of Employment Scheme (ILOE) — Authorities have emphasised that before submitting a claim, the worker's employer must cancel the employee's work permit, a necessary step for the process. The Unemployment Insurance Scheme aims to offer financial support to those affected by job loss, helping them manage expenses while they search for new employment opportunities. The scheme is part of broader labour reforms in the UAE designed to enhance workforce protection and economic resilience. Workers are encouraged to visit the official ILOE platform to review eligibility requirements and the step-by-step claim process.
