275 families put up in relief camps in the Nilgiris
Udhagamandalam: Information and publicity minister M P Saminathan, along with MP A Raja and TN chief whip K Ramachandran, inspected the rain-affected areas in the Nilgiris on Tuesday, even as the India Meteorological Department extended the red alert for the hill retreat for the day. The minister was accompanied by R Lalitha, monitoring officer for the Nilgiris, and district collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru. Eight more trees were uprooted in the hill retreat overnight in the incessant rain and strong winds. Fire and rescue personnel, along with the highways and forest officers, were quick to remove them and restore traffic. Avalanche recorded the highest rainfall at 256mm, followed by Emerald (132mm) and Upper Bhavani (123mm) for the 24 hours that ended at 7am on Tuesday. Heavy rain was recorded in Kundha, Gudalur, Pandalur and Ooty taluks. Kotagiri and Coonoor taluks received comparatively less rainfall. Bembatty Road in Kundha taluk and Kalhatty Ghat Road, both part of state highways, were cleared and reopened for traffic in the morning. Bembatty Road needs a retaining wall in the landslide area." Following the inspection, Raja held a review meeting with the district administration at the collectorate in Ooty. Their food and medical care are being properly managed by the govt. The district administration will now take steps to assess the crop damage for compensation." He said the damaged drinking water lines and electric poles would be rectified in a day to ensure resumption of uninterrupted supply. "The work will take one more day in remote areas. Municipalities and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board are putting in all efforts to complete the work at the earliest. Disaster management machinery is in place in the district to tackle any eventuality. There is no need to panic." Later in the day, Raja, along with the district officials, inspected the relief camp at Pudhuvayal in Gudalur.

21 crore project to start more courses at Govt Arts College
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu govt is set to add more facilities such as printing technology, textile technology, and a library at the govt fine arts college in an area of 53,305sqft, these facilities will be housed in a four-storey structure to be built at a cost of 21.1crore. Tamil development and information department minister M P Saminathan and HR&CE minister P K Sekarbabu laid the foundation stone for the at the college said printing technology will help introduce courses in digital printing, digital designing, 3D printing, and designing. "This is a widely useful skill which students mostly learn in private institutes.
