Mysuru: Motorists caught driving vehicles with window tints beyond the permissible limit are being fined Rs 500 here. Police are also making vehicle owners remove the tint on the spot.
The initiative aims to ensure public safety and security and is in keeping with Supreme Court directives.
While there's some confusion over the degree to which window tinting is permissible, a police officer clarified that
Supreme Court guidelines
on the issue clearly state that no additional material should be affixed to the window glass.
The regulations apply to all vehicle types, including private cars, taxis, and commercial vehicles, specifically prohibiting any aftermarket modifications to window transparency.
Dark tints on vehicle windows often make it difficult for the police to identify the occupants of vehicles. Additionally, heavy tinting reduces visibility for motorists at night, potentially raising the threat of accidents.
Police are also conducting regular awareness campaigns to educate motorists about the rules.
M Shivashankar, the assistant commissioner of police (traffic), said a special drive was conducted in Mysuru city and some motorists were booked over using darker window tints.
About 31 driving car were booked for using black films on car windows during the special drive on Sunday. NR traffic police have booked 16 cases and VV Puram traffic police seven cases.
Traffic police have planned similar awareness drives against speeding, bike stunts, and using defective vehicle registration number plates, the ACP further said.
