Grand final heroics just the start for Mariners' Gomez
Grand final heroics and a Matildas call-up are just the beginning for emerging midfield star Izzy Gomez. That's the view of Central Coast coach Emily Husband after her midfield maestro led the charge in the Mariners' breakthrough A-League Women triumph on penalties on Sunday. But whether she can keep hold of the 22-year-old is yet to be seen. CENTRAL COAST MARINERS STRIKE FIRST IN THE GRAND FINAL 🌴🔥👊Semi-Final hero Isabel Gomez pounces ONE MINUTE into the 2nd half! #MVCvCCM live now on 10 Bold, 10 Play & Paramount+. — Ninja A-League (@aleaguewomen) May 18, 2025 The midfielder scored the opening goal in the regular-time 1-1 draw and also converted her penalty as part of a masterful performance as Central Coast won the shootout 5-4. Gomez notched seven goals and three assists from 16 games this season, having missed 11 through her MCL injury suffered in November, days after her first Matildas call-up. She is due to head into camp later this week ahead of friendlies against Argentina. "This past week has been amazing to be selected in the Matildas as well. It's such an honour. So I'm super grateful," Gomez said. "I'll go in with a lot of confidence. I've definitely grown in that aspect. "That's thanks to Em - she's really pushed me to be a better player and step up in these moments. And, yeah, I think it's great." Veteran Victory striker Emily Gielnik, who missed out on Matildas selection, gave some timely advice. "I saw Izzy Gomez crying, and I gave her a hug and I said, 'enjoy that first cap when you wear that green and gold jersey. You deserve it. Embrace it and enjoy every minute, because you've had a hell of a season'," Gielnik said. That will only be the start, according to Husband. "She's an incredibly special player, and she's somebody that we know has incredible talent, and she's still got a lot more to give," Husband said. "I don't think she's still even quite 100 per cent yet. "I look at our season and wonder what we could have achieved if we'd have had her all season. "She's not only just an incredible player with great athletic ability and great technical ability, great decision making, she's a phenomenal person as well. "So credit to her, credit to her family, she'll have made a lot of people proud, not just tonight, but for the last two seasons, and she's been an absolute dream to coach. I couldn't ask for a better player." Gomez is contracted for next season but offers from overseas and elsewhere in the ALW are certain to come. "There's a lot of options, but still unsure where I'm headed," Gomez said. Husband is confident she can keep most of her championship-winning team together. "I think they'll bring themselves together, I really do," she said. "I look at around the changing room, how close they are as a group and how much they they back each other, and how collective they are. "I think that's more of a selling point than anything else, to be honest."

Victory pile pain on battling ALM champs Central Coast
Melbourne Victory have charged to a 3-0 A-League Men's win over Central Coast to leave the two-time defending champions' title defence on the brink. Arthur Diles' decision to swing changes after a disappointing 1-1 away draw to lowly Brisbane was vindicated as Nishan Velupillay and Bruno Fornaroli scored on their return to his starting line-up. Zinedine Machach added a blistering strike in the 92nd minute to rub salt into the Mariners' wounds. Victory (33 points) charged to fourth on the table with Saturday's impressive win at AAMI Park, behind Auckland FC (40), Western United (35) and Melbourne City (34). But Mark Jackson's Mariners (21 points, goal difference of -16) are in strife, sitting 10 points behind sixth-placed Western Sydney with six games to go - starting with next Sunday's trip to Auckland. Victory had 24 shots (nine on target) and Mitch Langerak didn't need to make a save, with the Mariners registering just one shot, and none on target. Diles dropped Zinedine Machach, Nikos Vergos and Santos for Socceroos trio Velupillay, Fornaroli and Daniel Arzani. New loan signing Alex Badolato, the player of the tournament in the Young Socceroos' U20 Asian Cup trumph, came off the bench for his Victory debut and impressed in his half-hour on the pitch. Victory's opener, in the ninth minute, was all but gift-wrapped. Mariners goalkeeper Dylan Peraic-Cullen passed up the centre for Haine Eames but the 16-year-old didn't properly control the ball and it spilled into the path of Velupillay, who made him pay with a fierce first-time strike. Fornaroli bounced an audacious bicycle kick over the bar in the 34th minute, but seven minutes later doubled Victory's lead. The striker timed his run to perfection, latching onto a long ball from Brendan Hamill with a wonderful first touch, before turning Brian Kaltak inside out and coolly lashing home. Bruno Fornaroli, take a bow! 🫡💥The @gomvfc star produces a clinical finish to double his side's lead at AAMI Park. 📺 Watch #MVCvCCM live NOW on Paramount+, 10 Play or 10 Bold. — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) March 8, 2025 Tempers threatened to boil over after the break with Mariners substitute Nicholas Duarte in the thick of everything. Victory should have made it 3-0 in the 82nd minute but Santos couldn't quite control a wonderful ball from Badolato, while Peraic-Cullen brilliantly denied Vergos in the 90th. But there was no stopping Machach when he received the ball 25 yards out and slammed into the top corner. Victory next play the Wanderers away on Saturday.

Snubbed Matilda Gielnik steers Victory past Mariners
Snubbed Matildas striker Emily Gielnik has scored a double for Melbourne Victory to deliver a 2-0 win over Central Coast and shoot to the top of the A-League Women golden boot race. Elsewhere, Brisbane and Western United fought out a 0-0 draw at Perry Park. Gielnik and teammate Alex Chidiac were overlooked for Australia's SheBelieves Cup squad, while teenage midfielder Alana Murphy was a late call-up. The powerful striker scored in the 10th minute, missed a penalty in the 44th minute and added a cheeky second in the opening minute of first-half stoppage time. Chidiac and Murphy also controlled the midfield duel throughout the match at the Home of the Matildas in Bundoora. "She was pretty determined," coach Jeff Hopkins told AAP. "One or two of the girls were. "I thought Chids was excellent today as well - not a point to prove, but to say, 'Hey, I'm still I'm still around, still alive and kicking'. So it was good. "We had a good response from the whole team." In the process, Victory (32 points) leapfrogged Adelaide (31) into second place, while cutting Melbourne City's lead to seven. Only the leg of Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon stopped a close-range strike from Jade Pennock in the second minute. Victory snatched the lead eight minutes later when a beautiful through ball from Murphy unleashed Gielnik to score. What a way to celebrate your first @TheMatildas call-up! 🇦🇺🙌19-year-old Alana Murphy provides a sensational assist for Emily Gielnik - and @gomvfc lead after just 10 a ball that #MVCvCCM live now on 10 Play & Paramount+. — Ninja A-League (@aleaguewomen) February 16, 2025 Gielnik had her head in her hands in the 44th minute when she blasted a penalty over the bar after Jessica Seaman legged Rachel Lowe in the area. But she had her second goal of the day, and ninth of the season, just two minutes later. The ball bobbled out from a corner and Chidiac's shot was headed towards goal before Gielnik instinctively flicked the ball home. Mariner Annalise Rasmussen hit the crossbar just before half-time. Mariners star Isabel Gomez returned from injury on the hour mark and immediately showed her class. In the 65th minute, substitute Tiana Fuller clipped the post while Pennock forced a fine save from Newbon in the 73rd minute. "Today, the first half we let ourselves down compared to our levels that we expect and we know the girls can deliver," coach Emily Husband told AAP. "But the reaction in the second half was the right one, unfortunately we just couldn't come back from a 2-0 deficit." At Perry Park, Danielle Tan thought she had given the Roar an injury-time winner when she headed home, but she was offside. Perth host Wellington in Sunday's late match.
