Frequent power disruptions add to heatwave woes in city
Lucknow: As Lucknow swelters, residents were found grappling with frequent power outages, compounding the misery of a relentless heatwave. From Fazullaganj to Alambagh, complaints of disrupted electricity supply, unresponsive helplines, and low voltage echo across the city, leaving families struggling with basic needs. In Keshav Nagar 1, Fazullaganj, a resident had to spend an entire night without power, calling it "extremely uncomfortable". Farhat Hussain reported a nearly three-hour outage, with customer care calls disconnected without resolution. Sachin Yadav in Faizullaganj 1's Basant Vihar Colony noted night cuts lasting over an hour for five days, with the 1912 helpline perpetually busy. Unable to connect to the helpline, few residents opted for social media to raise their voice. A user of X, who identified himself as Shivansh Saxena tweeted around 2.30 pm about a power outage in Jankipuram sector-D. Similar power outage was reported by another X user in the Amrai area of MVVNL's Gomtinagar zone jurisdiction. In Lucknow Central zone, a Rajajipuram resident Pooja Shukla highlighted a cascading crisis: no electricity means no water supply, leaving her family in a severe shortage. In Alambagh, Ayushi Singh, a working professional, struggled to cook and sleep due to night outages, affecting her work performance. Neetu Mishra in Alambagh Saketpuri described daily cuts, with power flickering every 15-30 minutes, calling it a "troubling routine." While in Amausi zone, Diksha Gaur from Aashiana Sector M complained about low voltage, which rendered fans and ACs useless. According to MVVNL official source, "All field units are working round the clock to attend any power outage complaint instantly. In fact, the discom is also using social media tools to immediately post updates about the estimated time for resolving the power outage and attach images of the on-duty team which gives a sense of assurance to power consumers." The source added, "During summer the power demand is at peak. The system breaks down due to overload, therefore to tackle such situations, the field team is always on standby, to repair faults." Visually impaired judo champ caught in a ‘power' struggle
Lucknow: Kamal Sharma (29), a visually impaired para-judo athlete and former national awardee who clinched the 2013 world championship, is used to overcoming obstacles—both on the mat and in life. But his latest battle has left him grappling with an opponent he never expected: Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Ltd (MVVNL), the state power discom. Despite winning medals for India, Kamal now finds himself defeated by red tapism delays as he runs from pillar to post for an electricity connection in Lucknow. Posted as a bank clerk in Alambagh, Kamal recently started construction of his dream home in Kakori's Sarosa Bharosa area. Initially I was given an estimate of Rs 70,000 as there was no power infrastructure but make-shift arrangements powering the neighbouring homes. Later, the estimate was revised, and I paid Rs 25,000 on March 11. Since then, I only have been receiving assurance from JE, SDO and EE, that soon my house will get power connection, but till date, I'm using diesel generator taken on rent for Rs 300 per day to power the requirement for house construction," said Kamal who lives in nearby rented accommodation with his wife. He added: "There is only a requirement for 50-55m long cable from the nearest pillar to power my house. However, SDO informed me that currently there is a shortage of single- phase cable." MVVNL superintendent engineer DK Saxena of Amausi zone told TOI: "We are probing why power connection has not been provided to Kamal Sharma yet. Since he has paid the amount for power infrastructure, he will certainly get the connection." Hailing from Pilibhit, Kamal won the gold at the world judo championship for visually-impaired persons in Hungary in 2013. He captained the visually impaired UP cricket team in 2018-19, won the national chess championship in 2017 in Lucknow, and received the national best sportsperson award in para athlete category in 2020.
