Why 908 Devices Stock Rocketed More Than 18% Higher This Week
The specialty device maker announced it had delivered its devices to an important European customer. The Romanian Customs Authority has deployed 27 MX908 detection devices. 10 stocks we like better than 908 Devices › A deal agreed in a far-off country was the spark that ignited chemical analysis device maker 908 Devices (NASDAQ: MASS) this week. The company's stock burned hot, finishing the period over 18% higher in price, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Before market open on Wednesday, 908 Devices announced -- no doubt happily -- that the Romanian Customs Authority has deployed 27 of the company's MX908 devices throughout its organization. These are handheld machines that pack sophisticated chemical analysis capabilities; the company claims they can identify a range of chemical substances in a matter of seconds. According to 908 Devices, this gives users the ability to detect even trace amounts of compounds on surfaces such as vehicle exteriors and containers. The company said it delivered all 27 MX908s to the central European country earlier this year. Its deal was done through a program headed by the European Union, of which Romania is a member country. That program, Customs Control Equipment, aims to assist E.U. nations in obtaining the latest, state-of-the-art border control assets. In its press release touting the deal, 908 Devices quoted CEO Kevin Knopp as saying, "The Romanian Customs Authority has taken a proactive step to arm its officers with fast, trace chemical identification, and we are committed to supporting their efforts to ensure enhanced safety and security at the border." One piece of information missing in 908 Devices' press release was the financial particulars of the Romania deal. It's hard to gauge the true impact of such an arrangement on the fundamentals without getting some sense of how large it is in terms of revenue and/or profitability. Regardless, this is undoubtedly a win for the company; not only will it bring in revenue, but transacting with a high-level governmental authority can only enhance its reputation and (hopefully) draw in new clients. Investors were right to cheer this news. Donation combats illicit narcotic trafficking
SPRINGFIELD — A decade-long effort to curb illicit drug trafficking in the region was recently buttressed by an investment in new equipment. Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni announced at a press conference on May 12 that his office and the State Police have received a $285,000 donation from the Massachusetts National Guard's counterdrug program to help combat transnational criminal organizations, violent gangs and other drug trafficking organizations in the area. Among the new equipment funded by the donation are a gray key — a tool for mobile devices that extracts critical information in narcotics investigations — and TruNarc, which is used for rapid analysis and identification of dangerous narcotics. It also funds a Cellebrite to help manage and organize data from mobile devices in narcotics investigations or prosecutions; as well as a handheld backscatter, which detects narcotics and other contraband through X-ray imagery in homes or vehicles. Additionally, the money finances an MX 908 drug analyzer for 'highly accurate' and 'more sensitive' analysis of dangerous drugs, even in trace amounts. In his remarks to the press, Gulluni said the new equipment will be accessible to his office's task forces, as well as local and state law enforcement. 'The danger of illicit narcotics to our communities has not abated,' Gulluni said. 'As drug dealers and traffickers adopt new methods and acquire new ways to infiltrate our communities, we must stay ahead of them and similarly continue to adapt and evolve our methods of investigation and interdiction.' Investment in new equipment comes at a time when the number of opioid-related fatal overdoses across the state has remained steady over the past several years. According to Gulluni, Massachusetts experienced between 2,100 to 2,300 opioid-related fatal overdoses over the last few years, and Hampden County specifically has seen an increase in recent years. In 2015, Gulluni's office signed a memorandum of understanding with the state's National Guard to tackle drug trafficking problems that are exacerbating the opioid crisis. The partnership was renewed in 2018. 'I have said many times, we have to aid and support those suffering from the disease of addiction, but we must also simultaneously deter and arrest those who profit from it,' Gulluni said. The National Guard's counterdrug program has helped law enforcement in each state combat illicit drug trafficking since its inception in 1989, according to Gary Keefe, adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard. 'We in the guard, we look at these drugs now as weapons,' Keefe said. 'We're very proud to do what we can to continue to support the mission of getting rid of this and making sure that Hampden County and the neighborhoods in Hampden County are safer places for people to live and raise families.' Gulluni mentioned that the National Guard's global reach is 'a huge aspect of assistance' on his office's work in the realm of 'bigger narcotics investigations.' As part of the program, the guard has assigned specialized personnel to support both the Hampden DA's SAFE Narcotics Task Force and the State Police's Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team, according to his office. 'Some of the analysis, linguistic services, etc., are things that locally or even at the state level we might not have access to,' Gulluni said. 'So, the federal government through the National Guard can provide that here at the very organic local level to assist us and collaborate to make sure that we're doing our best work.' Aside from Gulluni's partnership with the state police and National Guard, his office also works with the New England High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, a regional organization that provides funding resources, facilitates and enhances coordination of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in designated areas. David Kelley, the deputy director of NEHIDTA, said the organization runs several projects to combat illicit drug trafficking, including its domestic highway enforcement program. 'The I-91 corridor that travels through this state and this county is patrolled by the Massachusetts State Police,' Kelley said. 'I will tell you that their efforts on [I-]91 to intercept and prevent drugs from entering these communities is nothing less than stellar, and I am very, very proud that we were able to play a role here today.' Local police begin using new groundbreaking technology to test for drugs
Every day, 14 Pennsylvanians die from opioid overdose. Now- new technology is available for the first time in our area, helping investigators get dangerous drugs off the streets faster than ever before. Channel 11 anchor Gordon Loesch got an exclusive look at the system designed to save lives. Channel 11 cameras were allowed inside the Washington County District Attorney's office as local police - some undercover - learned how to use this new and very expensive piece of technology - the MX908 spectrometer. 'It's going to be a game changer,' said Det. Michael Ledger of the Canonsburg Police Department. The portable device can be used to test for nearly 200 chemicals, explosives, and drugs. 'If we have an active crime scene, we could take this machine right in and test things in the house off the tables.' Drugs are specifically why the Washington County DA just secured six of the devices. Peters Township Police Chief Joseph Glover says this will offer a new line of protection for officers from dangerous substances like heroin and fentanyl. 'It can be absorbed through your fingers; it can also be inhaled. And either one can be very bad for someone, especially somebody who has absolutely no tolerance for it,' said Chief Glover. Right now, it takes weeks or months to send in substances and get results from state crime labs. But with the MX908 - it takes just minutes and, because it's portable, it can be done in the field. 'To be able to prosecute people that want to put these poisons into our communities a lot quicker,' said Washington County DA Jason Walsh. The president of the company, Stephen Mills, says this device started out in counterterrorism. 'Originally the targets of interest were very much based on chemical warfare and explosives,' said Mills. Mills says his company has now sold more than 3000 of the devices worldwide.' 'Law enforcement really has become a key focus for us because of the emergence of fentanyl and the emergence of nitazenes which is a new opioid that we're seeing on the street more. Eighty percent of people don't even know what those are--- they are more potent than fentanyl,' said Mills. The Pennsylvania State Crime Lab would still be needed for 'confirmation' on any 'positive' test result from the MX908. But it's possible in the future -- the device could be used to help lessen the workload at the state lab. Ohio has been testing out its own use. Ohio has a very interesting program backed by their lab where they're trying to use the MX908 to adjudicate cases that are of lower levels. Cases that would result in drug rehab or you know suspended sentences stuff like that. so, they're trying to use that to take some of the backlog off the lab.
