Mariners SS J.P. Crawford goes ballistic after ejection over wrong third-strike call vs. Nationals

Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford had some words for home plate umpire Andy Fletcher on Thursday. In the sixth inning of the Mariners' 9-3 loss to the Washington Nationals, Crawford was rung up on a called third strike from starting pitcher Mackenzie Gore with runners on the corners, no outs and Seattle down 2-0. The pitch was outside to the naked eye, but Fletcher still saw it as in the zone. Advertisement Immediately after he was punched out, Crawford could be heard yelling "That's not a strike man!" at Fletcher, who responded by ejecting him. Crawford remained on the field to get his money's worth until Mariners manager Dan Wilson stepped in and pushed him back to the dugout. Crawford was replaced atop the Mariners lineup by Leo Rivas, who took over at second while Dylan Moore moved to cover shortstop. MLB's Statcast cameras sided with Crawford, showing the pitch to be at least a ball outside. That result wound up being significant. Julio Rodriguez struck out on the next at-bat to give the Mariners their second out, then Cal Raleigh reached base on a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Arozarena also struck out to keep Seattle scoreless for the inning.

How Whiteville alumnus Mackenzie Gore is leading MLB in 2025

Mackenzie Gore makes his ninth start of the 2025 MLB season for the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The left-hand pitcher is off to a fiery start, tossing a majors-best 68 strikeouts in 46 innings. Gore, who was selected No. 3 overall by the San Diego Padres in the 2017 MLB draft, was a standout at Whiteville High School in Eastern North Carolina. Advertisement Since getting called up to the big leagues in 2022, Gore, who turned 26 earlier this year, has made 83 appearances with 80 starts, throwing 472 strikeouts with a career 4.11 ERA. This season, however, is the lefty's best start by far as he's on pace for nearly 300 strikeouts. What do the experts say about Mackenzie Gore? Gore started 2025 fast, throwing 13 strikeouts while walking zero on opening day. 'That was special,' manager Davey Martinez told Jessica Camerato. 'To go out there in his first Opening Day start and do what he did was awesome.' "Gore has slowly built himself into one of the most exciting starters in the Majors. The 26-year-old Gore has a 3.33 ERA and 1.3 FanGraphs Wins Above Replacement in his first eight starts and has struck out an MLB-leading 68 hitters." "At 26, Gore might have the best breaking-ball combination in all of baseball. Leads the majors with 68 strikeouts and 38 of which are on his breaking balls. He has a 52% whiff-rate using his curve ball and his slider. That's an astronomical number."
