Jesse Southwell, debutants shine as NSW claim Origin I
NSW are on the road to State of Origin redemption, thrashing Queensland 32-12 in the women's series opener to begin John Strange's coaching tenure with a bang. An eye-gouging allegation from NSW hooker Keeley Davis headlined an eventful first match since the Blues coughed up their 1-0 lead last year to lose the inaugural three-match series 2-1. But to begin the second, the Blues cashed in on Strange's call to overhaul his team and finished with their biggest-ever women's Origin win on Thursday night. New halfback Jesse Southwell's control of her left edge was game-defining while the four NSW debutants shone before a Suncorp Stadium crowd of 26,022 - the largest in women's rugby league history. First-gamer Jayme Fressard scored twice down the left wing, Ellie Johnston scored the go-ahead try pummelling through Maroons in the second half before fullback Abbi Church sealed the result. How good is a try on debut for Jayme Fressard 😮💨#MadeForMore — NSW Blues Women (@nswbluesw) May 1, 2025 NSW will fancy their chances of clinching for the Origin shield for the first time since 2022 given they host the final two matches of the series. In a moment of high drama, Davis claimed she was eye-gouged just before Isabelle Kelly scored NSW's second try, and lodged an official complaint with referee Belinda Sharpe. Davis would not name the player she believed responsible but had first gestured towards her eyes following a tackle from second-rower Sienna Lofipo. Tiana Penitani Gray also risks the ire of the match review committee after pulling Tamika Upton's hair as the Queensland fullback made a break late in the first half. Penitani Gray had limited chances to shine on her much-discussed move to five-eighth as the majority of traffic went through Southwell's left edge. After Jess Sergis scored the opener down the right within four minutes, halfback Southwell had a hand in the Blues' next three tries. In her first Origin game since 2023, Southwell combined seamlessly with new captain Kelly and second-rower Yasmin Clydsdale, with the former crashing over before Fressard's double. Prop forward Johnston put the Blues on the path to victory when she burrowed over with 20 minutes to play and could have had a second, but was narrowly held up in the final 10 minutes. There's no stopping her 💪🏻#MadeForMore — NSW Blues Women (@nswbluesw) May 1, 2025 Fellow debutant Church confirmed the victory later in that set as Southwell threw the last pass to help make it a four-score game. Five-eighth Tarryn Aiken was Queensland's best, sending up the bomb that helped Lofipo score the Maroons' first before putting debutant Rory Owen over with a flat ball. But the Maroons could be thankful the deficit was not larger with Southwell missing three conversion attempts. One of eight Origin debutants across the two sides, Queensland's Jasmine Peters suffered a game-ending head knock colliding with Sarah Togatuki just before the break. But she is set to clear concussion protocols by the second game of the series in Sydney on May 15.

Silver for para surfer Zubeida
Zubeida Bux (56) made an inspiring splash at the SA Parasurfing Championships in Durban last weekend. The well-known South Coast ' surfer chick' took second place while representing KwaZulu-Natal in the Prone 2 division. Her total score was 10.43 behind winner Nolu Makalima on 13.77. For Zubeida, the event was more than a competition – it was a celebration of freedom, strength and doing what she loves. She has now successfully competed in four championships. ' I felt so alive out there. I absolutely love being in the water, and it's where I feel free. Without the amazing volunteers and coaches from Made For More, this wouldn't be possible. Their dedication and support means everything, ' said Zubeida. Born in Port Shepstone into the Moosa Bux family, her first major challenge was when she contracted polio at a young age, which left her wheelchair-bound. However, she has embraced life with open arms and continues to prove that no obstacle is too great when you have a strong mind and an even stronger heart. She looks forward to next year's event and thanks everyone for their support and encouragement. Eels' Lomax out for six weeks, racing clock for Origin
Zac Lomax kicked Parramatta to their first win of the season with a broken foot, which is set to leave the winger in a race against time to be fit for the State of Origin series opener. Lomax sealed the Eels' first win of Jason Ryles' tenure last Saturday when he kicked a golden-point field goal in Parramatta's 23-22 win over his former club St George Illawarra. It was initially believed that Lomax had suffered bruising to his foot after he spent a good chunk of the second half limping. You could tell how much icing this one meant to Zac Lomax 😤#MadeForMore — NSWBlues (@NSWBlues) April 7, 2025 But scans revealed late on Tuesday that Lomax had a minor fracture in his foot, with the 25-year-old set to miss the next six weeks of action, starting with Saturday's clash against Canberra in Darwin. Bailey Simonsson appears the most likely option for Ryles to turn to in Lomax's absence. The injury leaves Lomax at long odds to return to the NSW squad for State of Origin I in Brisbane on May 28. Lomax was one of the success stories of the Blues' 2024 series victory, the ex-Dragons flyer featuring in every game, scoring three tries and kicking eight goals after being installed as the NSW goalkicker. If Lomax's return to fitness goes to schedule he will line up for the Eels in round 11 against Newcastle on May 16, giving him just one match to press his claim for a recall. NSW coach Laurie Daley is set to name his squad for the series opener on May 19. Lomax's injury comes at the same time fellow incumbent NSW winger Brian To'o is sidelined with a hamstring issue, which is expected to rule him out until round nine. Manly fullback Tom Trbojevic, who has played Origin as both a winger and centre, is also not due back until round nine after being sidelined with a medial ligament injury. Daley will also be hoping Eels halfback Mitchell Moses can find some instant form when he returns from a foot issue. Moses has been struggling with pain in his foot caused by a screw inserted during surgery last year and starred for the Blues in last year's series. He is also due back in round nine and will jostle with Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai for a place as a five-eighth or halfback in the Blues' set-up.
