Caste census is Rahul's victory, govt buckled under his pressure: MP Congress

The Centre on Wednesday announced that caste enumeration will be a part of the next population census. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA). The government buckled under the pressure created by Gandhi, the party said. Bhopal, May 1 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Congress on Thursday said the Centre's move to include caste enumeration in the next census was a victory of party leader Rahul Gandhi, and claimed that he waged a 10-year-long battle for it. Talking to reporters here, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari said, 'It is the victory of Rahul ji. He relentlessly fought for it for the last 10 years. The BJP and its leaders opposed it but finally gave in.' He said the party's state unit will invite Gandhi to Bhopal in June for a mega event to ensure that the remaining fight of the caste census and empowering the weaker sections of society is accomplished. 'We will ensure that his vision to empower all sections of society through caste enumeration is completed,' he added. Patwari said this was not for the first time that the Centre gave in to Gandhi's demands. 'On many occasions, the Centre had to buckle under his pressure. It was due to the pressure mounted by our leader that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to backtrack,' he said. 'The Centre withdrew the new draft of the Broadcasting Services Bill last year after Gandhi opposed it saying it was against freedom of expression. Also, the lateral entry move for government positions was rolled back due to his pressure,' Patwari said. He said his party will hold programmes to sensitise people on the caste census issue from May 3 to 10, along with the Save Constitution campaign, as part of which rallies will be held in each district of the state. 'The campaign will then be run from May 11 to 17 in every assembly constituency of the state. Party leaders and workers will go door-to-door across the state from May 20 to 30as part of the campaign,' he added. PTI LAL NP This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Madhya Pradesh BJP Leader Issues Death Threat to Congress MLA Over Pahalgam Attack

New Delhi: Veteran Madhya Pradesh Congress leader and the party's MLA from the Bhopal Central assembly constituency Arif Masood is facing death threats, including one issued publicly by BJP leader Krishna Ghadge, who is a close supporter of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. 'This matter is not about Pakistan. Those agents of Pakistan are standing at this very intersection, listening. I want to tell them, now try causing a ruckus in Bhopal. Arif Masood, the thief, and his followers who oppose our religion, we will not spare them… We will deal with them right here),' BJP leader Ghadge is seen saying in multiple videos while speaking about the recent Pahalgam terror attack, reported Indian Express . Ghadge, who is a member of the state BJP working committee, also used an expletive against Masood. While Masood's supporters sent a complaint against Ghadge to the police, the BJP leader refused to apologise for his comments. 'Our rally was against Pakistan. My statement calling him (Masood) a Pakistani agent and a threat to take his life… it's a subject that is much better discussed now that the Arif Masood fan club people are filing a complaint against me… I spoke against Pakistan and they are taking Pakistan's side and filing a report against me,' said Masood in a statement. Earlier, Masood had also received death threats from a man called Sachin Raghuvanshi. Later, photos of Raghuvanshi, who faces an FIR, later emerged with a senior BJP leader. 'They are angry since I keep getting votes and remain the Bhopal MLA despite them applying their entire might to dislodge me. They don't like the narrative of Hindu-Muslim unity either and hence target me,' Masood told the newspaper.

Police personnel shot inside station premises in M.P.'s Satna, hunt on for accused

A head constable was allegedly shot and injured by an unidentified man inside the premises of the Jaitwara police station in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district during the early hours of Tuesday (April 29, 2025). This marks the second incident of a police personnel being attacked within the past three days. According to the Satna police, the incident occurred at around 12:15 a.m. when Head Constable Prince Garg, who was asleep in the police barracks, went to check on a noise and was shot in the upper chest near the shoulder. The accused fled the scene immediately after the firing. Speaking to The Hindu, Satna Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Gupta said, 'He [Garg] was immediately rushed to the district hospital, and we received information around 12:30 a.m. He has since been referred to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa and is in stable condition, though still under medical observation.' The police later identified the alleged shooter as Adarsh Sharma alias Achchhu, a resident of Nihuti village in the district. A manhunt has been launched with 12 teams comprising nearly 50 personnel deployed to trace his whereabouts. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused may be suffering from mental illness. 'His parents have informed us that he has been a source of distress for the family. He would often misbehave with them and has even reportedly set his house on fire. At one point, he threw his grandparents out of the home,' Mr. Gupta added. Officials have yet to find any direct link between Mr. Garg and the accused. 'It is difficult to ascertain the motive at this stage, but all possible angles are being examined,' the SP said. Additional Superintendent of Police Shivesh Singh Baghel confirmed that the Inspector General of the Rewa zone has announced a reward of ₹30,000 for any credible information leading to the arrest of the accused. The incident has reignited political criticism, with Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari taking aim at Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also holds the Home portfolio. 'This is not just an attack on a policeman but on the State's law and order,' Mr. Patwari said, calling for urgent reforms in the police administration. He further alleged that repeated incidents of violence against police personnel, as well as against Dalits and tribal communities, were indicative of a deteriorating law and order situation in the State. 'These incidents are screaming that there is no rule of law left in Madhya Pradesh. I request the Chief Minister to relinquish the Home Department if he cannot ensure safety,' he added. Just days earlier, in the early hours of April 27, a Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel was assaulted by a group of youths at Bhopal's Rani Kamlapati station. A video of the incident, which showed his uniform being torn, had gone viral on social media, further fuelling concerns over police vulnerability and public lawlessness.
