‘Fallen heroes' Local police, sheriff's offices post for Memorial Day

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Multiple local law enforcement offices posted Monday in observance of Memorial Day. 'Today, we pause to honor the true meaning of Memorial Day – a day of remembrance for the courageous men and women who have laid down their lives in service to our country,' the Knox County Sheriff's Office wrote. 'Their valor and selflessness have paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy today.' Families and volunteers place flags to honor veterans on Memorial Day weekend The Madisonville Police Department, meanwhile, asked people to never forget the country's 'fallen heroes,' while other groups posted graphics like the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office which shared an image of marching soldiers and a graveyard of white crosses beneath the words 'Always Remember…' The Cocke County Sheriff's Office posted a quote from the popular song 'God Bless the U.S.A.' by Lee Greenwood: 'And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.' Gold Star Father shares about his veteran son while taking the last Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride 'Today, we remember and honor all who served and currently serve, as well as those who paid the ultimate sacrifice,' the University of Tennessee Police Department wrote. HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The Madisonville Police Department (MPD) says it will be increasing enforcement activities during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. MPD says several traffic safety checkpoints will be conducted throughout the city with a focus on identifying and removing impaired drivers from the roadways. Police say these officers have received extensive training beyond the basic police academy to recognize signs of drug and alcohol impairment in drivers. I-69 rehab project continues in Hopkins County with ramp closure Officers say possible checkpoint locations include: Grapevine Road / McLeod Lane Whittington Drive / Magaretta Loop West Noel Avenue / Rosecreek Road South Kentucky Avenue / East Jagoe Brown Road / Patriot Drive Princeton Road / Gentry Lane MPD notes checkpoints may be active at any or all of these locations throughout the weekend. HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – The Madisonville Police Department will be able to train K9s in a new way thanks to a donation from a soon to be Eagle Scout. The agency posted on social media that Flint Garrigan donated custom K9 training boxes that he designed and built to help enhance the skills and readiness of K9 officers. These training tools will make a lasting impact on our department and help keep Madisonville safe,' officials said. 'Great job, Flint, and congratulations on your path to becoming an Eagle Scout!' MPD says speeds reached 100 MPH before driver crashed into pole, ran before arrest

HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – Police arrested an Elizabethtown man after he allegedly drove at 100 MPH before crashing into a light pole, flipping and running from officers. The Madisonville Police Department state on Thursday at about 7:47 a.m., officers saw a blue Ford Escape traveling north on I-69, quickly changing lanes and forcing other vehicles to get out of the way while going upwards of 100 MPH. Officials state the vehicle exited before colliding with a light pole and catching on fire after flipping over and landing. Two people taken to hospital after serious crash on 41, Waterworks Road The driver was later identified as Ronald Mckenzie, and he allegedly jumped a barbed wire fence and fleeing on foot. Officials say a K9 unit arriving and was deployed, and Mckenzie stopped and started to comply after being warned of a pending K9 release. Mckenzie was able to be taken into custody after a brief struggle. He was taken to the Hopkins County Jail after being medically cleared for possible injuries, facing several charges including speeding, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading police and wanton endangerment.
