Josh Magennis admits retirement fears put to bed after call with Michael O'Neill
An honest conversation with Michael O'Neill saw Josh Magennis put to bed any thoughts of quitting international football. The 34-year-old was left contemplating his future after he was left out of the Northern Ireland squad for the friendlies against Switzerland and Sweden back in March as O'Neill assessed his other forward options. Magennis felt he needed to ask the boss if he still featured in his plans moving forward and he was pleased with the response he got back from O'Neill. "I was like, 'if we're going to get to the stage where you don't feel I can perform or I can contribute to your team, not a problem. That's no problem at all'. "But I didn't want to get to the stage where we were sugarcoating it. I said, if you want me to retire or you think that I should retire, just let me know so I can do it the right way. "I don't want to just fizzle out. I thought that if I was going to retire, I deserved to go out on my terms. Like all the other greats, Garth McAuley, Steven Davis, Johnny Evans. "But Michael made it very clear that retirement, in terms of me, wasn't the case. I think I'm the only striker he has of my profile. He doesn't have anyone else. He just made it aware that he needed to see other players. I have to take his word for it." Magennis is currently recovering from hip surgery, but he is targeting an international return for the start of the World Cup qualifiers in September but he admitted though that will only happen if he is producing on the pitch. "The only way I'm going to get back into that squad, like I have done with all the other squads, is to keep performing," said Magennis. "Michael's always been open and honest with me, and I've definitely been that way with him. When we had the conversation, we were both able to say our part. "Michael's the manager and his rationale and his thought process, as much as I didn't agree with it, it took me a couple of days to come round, I could understand it because eventually I'm going to hopefully, God willing, be a manager, be a coach. "It's a coach's job to always improve and always to make the team better. If Michael thought that by seeing other players playing friendlies before we went into the World Cup, because the World Cup is what really matters, then he's every right to do so. "So I sort of had to reframe my thought process in terms of getting away from the victim mentality. I never wanted that to happen. Football is an ever-evolving game. "It doesn't wait around for anyone. So my thought process quickly went from feeling that I should be in the squad to why am I not in the squad to, well, you've just got to get back to work. The only way to continue to be in Northern Ireland's squad is to put in performances that no one can refute. "So I've just got to keep catching his eye and keep performing until hopefully September, October, November for the World Cup qualifiers and get back in."

Forest beat 10-man Exeter City 4-2 on penalties in FA Cup drama
EXETER, England, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Premier League high-fliers Nottingham Forest struggled past 10-man Exeter City 4-2 on penalties to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup after being held 2-2 by their third tier opponents. Forest, who had started the night with a second-string side at St James Park, will now host top flight rivals Ipswich in the last 16 in March. The lowest-ranked club left in the competition gave Forest, who are third in the top flight and now the highest-placed team remaining in the draw -- a tough time after taking a fifth minute lead. They then fought back from 2-1 down to end the second half with everything still to play for and the crowd holding their breath and hoping for another major upset. Exeter's Ed Turns was shown a straight red card in the 87th for a high challenge on second half substitute Morgan Gibbs-White but they still had several good chances after that as the game stayed deadlocked through extra time. Forest, who made 10 changes to the side that beat Brighton & Hove Albion 7-0 in their previous Premier League match, had Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi treated on the pitch and taken off on a stretcher in extensive second half stoppage time. "It was a hard game, we had a lot of setbacks," a relieved Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo told ITV television. "I think we started the game in a bad way but the response was good. "It was tough but happy in the end that we are going through." Striker and captain Josh Magennis had the Grecians fans dreaming after Forest reserve goalkeeper Carlos Miguel fumbled an attempted catch and he was there to give Exeter a shock lead. The hope of a similar upset to nearby Plymouth Argyle's 1-0 defeat ofmighty Liverpool on Sunday died down 10 minutes later, when Ramon Sosa levelled with a shot that went in off goalkeeper Joe Whitworth. Forest drew strength from the equaliser and Awoniyi put the visitors ahead in the 37th when he collected the ball with his back to goal and turned to curl in a low shot. Exeter refused to give up and equalised in the 50th when Magennis's shot went in after taking a deflection off Willy Boly. Miguel went off injured eight minutes later with Premier League regular Matz Sels coming on as his replacement between the posts. There was a 12 minute delay in stoppage time when Awoniyi suffered a heavy clash with Whitworth and needed medical attention on the pitch. The Nigeria international was taken off on a stretcher, surrounded by physios and doctors. Magennis stepped up first to take the spot kicks, smashing the ball past Sels who then saved from Reece Cole after Chris Wood had made it 1-1. Gibbs-White made it 2-1 to Forest and Angus MacDonald hit the woodwork to leave Exeter in trouble with Elliot Anderson taking it to 3-1. Tony Yogane kept home hopes alive before Neco Williams ended them.

Nottingham Forest finally win marathon FA Cup tie at Exeter on penalties
Nottingham Forest survived a huge FA Cup scare against 10-man Exeter to win a penalty shoot-out after drawing 2-2 at St James Park. Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson all scored from the spot before fellow substitute Neco Williams wrapped up a marathon tie with the final kick of the contest at 11.03pm. Josh Magennis and Tony Yogane were on target for League One Exeter, but Matz Sels saved Reece Cole's poor penalty and Angus MacDonald struck the crossbar as Forest prevailed 4-2. Forest, third in the Premier League and the highest-ranked team left in the FA Cup, will now play Ipswich at home in round five. Despite an incredible effort from 10-man @OfficialECFC, it's @NFFC who progress on penalties 🌳#EmiratesFACup — Emirates FA Cup (@EmiratesFACup) February 11, 2025 Magennis had scored twice for Exeter – the competition's top scorer in taking his total to six – in giving the Grecians an early lead and then equalising at the start of the second period. Ramon Sosa and Taiwo Awoniyi, who left the action in stoppage time on a stretcher after being attended to by medics for several minutes, turned the tie in Forest's favour. Exeter debutant Ed Turns was handed a red card for a thigh-high challenge on Gibbs-White three minutes from time, but Forest had to settle for an extra 30 minutes after Jota Silva thundered a shot against the crossbar. Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo took the opportunity to rest almost his entire regular starting XI after his squad had spent the week away at a warm-weather training camp in Dubai. Brazilian midfielder Danilo was the sole survivor from the side which had demolished Brighton 7-0 last time out. Nuno's team sheet offered real hope to Exeter – 59 places below Forest on the football ladder – that they could replicate the giant-killing success of their Devon neighbours Plymouth, who had shocked Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday. Exeter had not won since their third-round victory over Oxford, losing four of their five games and conceding 10 goals against Leyton Orient and Stevenage in their previous two outings. A huge banner with the words 'Together We Can Create History' was held aloft on Exeter's Big Bank, the largest standing terrace in English football, as Grecians fans embraced the club's first fourth-round tie since 1981. Those supporters were able to celebrate a dream start when Carlos Miguel spilled Demetri Mitchell's fifth-minute effort at the feet of Magennis. Vincent Harper rushed back to clear off the line after Awoniyi had toed the ball past Grecians goalkeeper Joe Whitworth. But it was to be the briefest of reprieves for Exeter as moments later Ibrahim Sangare spied Sosa, and the Paraguayan found the net just as he had done in the third round against Luton. Whitworth pushed Awoniyi's volley around a post but the Forest forward was not to be denied after 37 minutes. Magennis has got another!@OfficialECFC are back in it 😲#EmiratesFACup — Emirates FA Cup (@EmiratesFACup) February 11, 2025 Again Sangare was the supplier and Awoniyi was allowed to turn on the edge of the box, work the ball onto his left foot, and find the bottom corner with Whitworth motionless. Exeter equalised five minutes after the restart when Magennis rose highest at a corner to force Miguel into a point-blank save. Magennis was on the rebound in a flash and Willy Boly turned it into his own net off a post. Miguel was soon forced off through injury and replacement Sels stood firm to prevent Ilmari Niskanen profiting one-on-one. It was one-way traffic in extra-time and Wood was twice denied by Whitworth as Forest were taken all the way.
