Orlando Pirates veteran defender may hang up his boots

Orlando Pirates stalwart Innocent Maela is reportedly preparing to call time on his playing career, but this might not be the end of his journey with the club. At 32, Maela made just 12 appearances across all competitions this season, starting only twice in the Betway Premiership. His final start came during Pirates' closing fixture of the season against Magesi FC. Which the source suggests may have been his last outing in the iconic black and white jersey. With his contract set to expire at the end of June, reliable sources have revealed that the club has opted not to renew it. Yet, the former captain could still remain part of the Buccaneers family. 'Inno is a Buccaneer through and through, and don't be surprised if he remains with the club beyond his career,' said the source. 'Remember that Pirates is where he started, in the club's youth development. Over the years, he has served the club with professionalism and commitment. And that isn't being taken lightly. He's been offered a role in a different capacity within the club. While final decisions are to be made, he's likely to take the offer.' Should Maela accept the role on offer, it would extend a long-standing tradition at Orlando Pirates of retaining loyal servants in off-field roles. From youth academy graduate to club captain, Maela has built a career marked by discipline, leadership, and consistency. Many within the club view his potential move into a technical, ambassadorial, or developmental position as a natural evolution of his career, especially considering his deep-rooted ties to the team. Maela's journey began within the Pirates' Youth Development system, and his rise through the ranks showcased his enduring commitment to the badge. Even as his playing days wind down, he will continue to influence the club behind the scenes. Orlando Pirates have also confirmed Maela's departure alongside that of midfielder Miguel Timm. The club paid tribute to both players on social media platform X. 'Thank you Miguel Timm for every tackle, every pass and every battle fought. Wishing you all the best,' read the post. Mandla Ncikazi optimistic: Orlando Pirates set for improvement next season after Magesi draw

MORE TO COME Mandla Ncikazi remained optimistic about Orlando Pirates' improvement next season after their 1-1 draw with Magesi FC, despite his likely return to an assistant role. Picture: BackpagePix 'Orlando Pirates will be a better team next season,' said Ncikazi after the match. Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring in the seventh minute, only for his strike to be cancelled out by Edmore Chirambadare just after the half-hour mark. In something of an anti-climax as Mamelodi Sundowns had clinched the league title almost two weeks prior, Pirates still had to play their last match a few days after the 'final weekend' of league action. Orlando Pirates interim coach Mandla Ncikazi insisted his charges would be a better team next season, following their 1-1 draw with Magesi FC at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening to conclude their Betway Premiership campaign. Ncikazi's Leadership Journey at Orlando Pirates: Reflecting on Challenges and Future Growth 'Pirates will improve – I trust the wisdom that is in that office of ours," he added. Ncikazi took charge of Pirates after former coach José Riveiro was allowed to leave his post early, with his last match in charge being the 3-0 league win over Golden Arrows on May 13. Since then, Ncikazi has led Pirates to three draws and a loss. 'We will have to take stock, we will have to compile our reports, where did we get it wrong, can we improve. "We can be better, where do we have to reinforce where we think we were doing well and after that I'm sure solutions will come out and we will be a better team next season.' Though it seems that Ncikazi will not continue as head coach as an assistant role is more likely, the 56-year-old was committed to catch Sundowns who have now won the last eight league titles in a row. 'I'm a smaller puzzle in a bigger picture, and how I'm wired, this has nothing to do with me, it's a mission. When you are at Pirates, you are sent. You must fulfil the mission. But growth in the club depends on how you look at it. I look at the positive side of life.' @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport

This result meant that Pirates finished second on the Premiership log with 61 points, 12 behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns. It was not the way the Buccaneers would have wanted to finish off the season, especially at their Orlando Stadium home, as a win would have served as a consolation after yet another disappointing campaign. However, this game was a true reflection of Pirates' shortcomings this season as they failed to either consolidate their lead or add to their advantage. This was due to the fact that they took the game to Magesi, using the speed of Mohau Nkota and composure of Relebohile Mofokeng. But it wasn't to be. Instead, Magesi stunned Pirates and punished their wastefulness as Edmore Chirambadare equalised before the break, resulting in the game ending 1-1. The equaliser must have stung for everyone, especially captain Maela, who was said to be making his final appearance for the club. Fans slate new ‘hubbly bubbly' trophy, Sundowns' Zwane, Onyango say it's ‘beautiful'

Described by its creator, Nelson Makamo, as a 'love letter to football', the new Betway Premiership trophy has met with a mixed reaction. The new piece of silverware has been slammed by football fans after its introduction to the public on Sunday, especially on social media, with some likening it to a 'hubbly bubbly' smoking device. Some players of the first recipients of the trophy, Mamelodi Sundowns, said they view it as a masterpiece after being presented it after winning their final Premiership game of 2024-25 2-0 against Magesi FC at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday evening.
