March Madness scores, results, bracket: UCLA, Notre Dame, South Carolina, TCU advance in NCAA women's tournament

The second round of the NCAA women's tournament began on Sunday, and the favorites keep on winning. Powerhouses like No. 1 South Carolina and No. 1 UCLA advanced, though the Bruins were tied at the half. Earlier in the day, No. 5 Kansas State defeated No. 4 Kentucky in an overtime thriller, while No. 5 Ole Miss also got an upset against No. 4 Baylor. No. 2 TCU and Hailey van Lith beat her former team, No. 7 Louisville, to reach the Horned Frogs' first Sweet 16 in school history. No. 2 Duke 59, No. 10 Oregon 53 No. 3 Notre Dame 76, No. 6 Michigan 55 No. 5 Kansas State 80, No. 4 Kentucky 79 (OT) No. 1 South Carolina 64, No. 9 Indiana 53 No. 5 Ole Miss 69, No. 4 Baylor 63 No. 2 TCU 85, No. 7 Louisville 70 No. 5 Tennessee 82, No. 4 Ohio State 67 No. 1 UCLA 84, No. 8 Richmond 67After letting them hang around early, UCLA put the Spiders away and secure a trip to their third straight Sweet 16. The top overall seed in the tournament is still alive. Lauren Betts finished with 30 points and 1 rebounds, and Kiki Rice added 23. Maggie Doogan, who dominated in the first half for Richmond, led the Spiders with 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Lauren Betts is now the first UCLA player to put up 25 points and 10 rebounds in an NCAA tournament game since 2000. She's up to 28 and 12 now late in the fourth quarter with the game all-but over. This game, somehow, was tied at halftime. UCLA outscored Richmond 29-7 in the period, and held the Spiders to just a single field goal in the last eight minutes, to completely blow this game open. That was a 23-2 run to end the quarter. After a battle early on, the Bruins are suddenly in full control. KiKi Rice coming out aggressive and Londynn Jones hitting from 3 is exactly what UCLA needs every game. After trading buckets early, UCLA has broken open a 13-5 run to start the third quarter. The Bruins are up by eight now, which is the largest lead of the game, not even four minutes into the second half. UCLA brought Lauren Betts out to the perimeter in the second half of the Big Ten championship to cause problems for JuJu Watkins. Richmond's five-out offense is necessitating it here. Betts' 6-7 frame can cause problems and force turnovers, but if the guards can find passing lanes, or get by her, it leaves UCLA vulnerable to giving up easy paint points. Richmond is not going away. Maggie Doogan has 16 points so far for the Spiders, who are still hanging right with the top-seeded team in the tournament midway through the game. They're shooting better than 65% from the field as a team, too, and ended the half on a 10-2 run. Lauren Betts leads the Bruins with 14 points, though she's the only one in double figures for the Bruins. Well, the Spiders are holding their own so far at Pauley Pavilion. They're up 20-18 after the first quarter where they shot nearly 73% from the field. The Bruins are up 8-6 early in the last matchup of the day on the women's side. They rolled past Southern by 38 points in the first round after earning the top overall seed in the tournament. None of the No. 4 seeds felt particularly strong in this tournament. That second tier of contenders below the likes of South Carolina, UConn, UCLA, USC, et al, was a pendulum all season. Even in the final week of the season, the final batch of hosting teams fluctuated. With Ohio State's loss, all three No. 4 teams in action today are out of the field. The only No. 4 left standing is Maryland, which faces No. 5 Alabama on Monday. No. 5 seeds Tennessee, Kansas State and Ole Miss advanced The Lady Vols have pulled off the upset in Columbus. They held on late and outscored Ohio State 16-8 in the fourth quarter to grab the 15-point win and secure another trip to the Sweet 16. They'll take on either Texas or Illinois in the next round. Tennessee is hanging on so far in the fourth quarter. They're up by 11 at the last media timeout, and are just minutes away from punching what would be their third Sweet 16 trip in four years. The Vols are a perfect 22-0 when leading with five minutes left this season, too. Tennessee needs to keep its foot on the gas to reach the Sweet 16. The Lady Vols had problems coughing up leads all season and a 10-point margin is NOTHIN' for these two squads. Each have had double-digit runs in the first 30 minutes. Seven minutes is a long time. This game is every bit as chaotic as you would expect from two teams that put on full-court pressure. A lot of play in the neutral zone, if we're using hockey terms. Tennessee ended the period on an 11-2 burst, capped by a layup from Ruby Whitehorn right before the buzzer, and the Lady Vols are back up by seven headed into the fourth quarter. Ohio State is on a 16-0 run now over about a two minute span, and we've suddenly got a game again. Jaloni Cambridge dropped nine of those 16 points, too. Losing in the second round of the SEC Tournament might have been for the best for Tennessee. The Lady Vols look refreshed and re-focused in this tournament, which is even more important for the style they play. But they can't let Ohio State get hot from 3. The Lady Vols opened the third quarter on an 8-2 tear off four layups and now lead by 11. It's their largest lead of the game. The first half closes out with Tennessee ahead by five points, holding on to the narrow lead the Lady Vols picked up in the second quarter. Tennessee outscored Ohio State 23-14 in the second quarter, taking the lead off a 12-1 run halfway through the quarter. Both teams are playing well defensively, picking up steals and blocks as well as shots. But the Vols are playing well off of the Buckeyes' mistakes: 14 of Tennessee's points have come off of Ohio State's nine turnovers, as opposed to seven points off turnovers from the Buckeyes. Ohio State's narrow lead is disappearing, with Tennessee taking a 27-25 lead after a pair of shots from forward Zee Spearman. After Spearman's second basket in a row — a tip shot off her own rebound — the Buckeyes are taking a timeout. Just under six minutes left in the half now. Addie Budnik added 14 points for Richmond (28-6), which had gone winless in the four previous March Madness appearances by a program that began play in 1981.

Maggie Doogan propels Richmond past Georgia Tech 74-49 for the Spiders' first March Madness victory

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Maggie Doogan had 30 points, 15 rebounds and six assists, and eighth-seeded Richmond routed ninth-seeded Georgia Tech 74-49 on Friday night for the Spiders' first women's NCAA Tournament victory. Addie Budnik added 14 points for Richmond (28-6), which had gone winless in the four previous March Madness appearances by a program that began play in 1981. With a phenomenal 18-point first half from Doogan, the Atlantic 10 player of the year, the Spiders jumped to a 20-point lead. They comfortably stayed in front of the Yellow Jackets all night while playing more than 2,600 miles from home at Pauley Pavilion. Richmond will next face the winner of top-seeded Big Ten champion UCLA's late meeting with First Four winner Southern. Tonie Morgan scored 12 points for the Yellow Jackets (22-11), who lost six of their final seven games. Georgia Tech started cold and never warmed up, making 30% of its shots in the first three quarters. The victory was the culmination of six years of steady growth under coach Aaron Roussell for the Spiders, who have now won 57 games in the last two seasons. After a few character-building nonconference losses in December, Richmond rolled off a 17-game winning streak and claimed the A10's regular-season title. The streak ended in the conference tournament semifinals on a buzzer-beater by St. Joseph's, but Doogan and the Spiders kept the confidence grown from a season of challenges met. They showed it against the ACC's Yellow Jackets, who were making their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five years under veteran coach Nell Fortner. Georgia Tech struggled down the stretch with those six late losses — albeit five to NCAA Tournament teams — while being forced to make two separate trips to California. After missing four of her first five shots, Doogan got the Spiders rolling in the first quarter with 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions during a 13-2 run. The Spiders scored 11 straight points to open the second quarter to stretch their lead to 30-10. But Georgia Tech finally increased its defensive intensity and held Richmond scoreless for five full minutes before Doogan's layup at the buzzer, which put the Spiders up 35-23 at halftime. Doogan added six points in the third quarter as Richmond maintained its double-digit lead. Morgan got a technical foul late in the third quarter for a hard foul on Doogan.
