"Sports infrastructure of our state has become better than many major states": Uttarakhand CM Dhami

Nainital (Uttarakhand) [India], June 6 (ANI): Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami underscored various steps taken in the sports sector in Uttarakhand to encourage and motivate the state's athletes on Friday. CM Dhami revealed that a policy has been implemented under which 'out of turn' government jobs are being provided to medal-winning players at the national and international level to encourage athletes in the state. He also assured that the government is working to encourage the emerging young players of the state through different programs. 'With the aim of encouraging sports persons, a new sports policy has been implemented in the state. Under this, out-of-turn government jobs are being provided to national and international medal-winning players,' CM Dhami said. 'Work is also being done to encourage emerging players of the state through programmes like Chief Minister Sports Development Fund, Chief Minister Player Incentive Scheme, Chief Minister Emerging Player Scheme and Sports Kit Scheme,' he added. Various steps are being implemented to improve sports infrastructure in Uttarakhand. At the beginning of last month, Dhami inaugurated the renovated ice rink at Maharana Pratap Sports College, Raipur, Dehradun. 'Today, the sports infrastructure of our state has become better than many major states of the country in many aspects, and now not only national but also international-level sports competitions have started being organised in our state,' he said. Uttarakhand also hosted the 38th National Games earlier this year. Throughout the tournament, cultural programs showcasing the traditions of different states were organised, giving participants a taste of the state's rich heritage. Local volunteers and sports coordinators actively assisted teams, ensuring they had everything they needed. 'In the 38th National Games held in our state this year, while our players performed excellently, the games were also organised in a very divine and grand manner,' he added. Earlier on Friday, Dhami also attended the three-day Shaurya Mahotsav organised in Chamoli, paying tribute to Ashok Chakra winner Shaheed Bhawani Dutt Joshi. The festival drew large crowds of local people who gathered to listen to the Uttarakhand CM. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including MLAs and ministers, party officials and workers, the District president and other local leaders, and family members of Shaheed Bhawani Dutt Joshi. The lamp lighting ritual was performed as a prayer to Agni Dev, seeking blessings for the successful conduct of the program. (ANI)

Uttarakhand govt's decision to rename sports complexes sparks outrage in Bengali community

Rudrapur: The Uttarakhand govt's decision to assign collective names to major sports facilities across four cities has sparked significant criticism, especially from Bengali community in Udham Singh Nagar district. Protesters have accused the state govt of undermining the legacy of sportspersons from their community and attempting to eras.e their contributions. The controversy arose following a govt order, approved by the Governor, which announced new titles for various integrated sports facilities on Tuesday. According to the order, all sports infrastructure in Raipur and Dehradun, including Maharana Pratap Sports College and Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, will now be collectively known as 'Silver Jubilee Sports Complex.' Similarly, facilities in Gaulapar, Haldwani, will be named Manaskhand Sports Complex, those in Haridwar will be named Yogasthal Sports Complex, and all sports infrastructure in Rudrapur, including Manoj Sarkar Stadium , will be grouped under Shivalik Sports Complex. However, the decision has not been well received by residents in Bengali-dominated areas of Rudrapur, Dineshpur, Shaktifarm, Sitarganj, and Gadarpur. Protests erupted in Rudrapur, where members of the Bengali community burned effigies of the govt, accusing it of cultural discrimination. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Changing the identity of the complex undermines not just him but the entire Bengali community." Subrata Kumar Biswas echoed similar sentiments and said, "This is yet another example of how the BJP govt continues to marginalise Bengalis in Uttarakhand. Manoj Sarkar is a symbol of pride for us, and this move feels like a deliberate insult." Minati Das from Shaktifarm said, "Although the govt hasn't officially erased the name, the decision to rename the entire complex diminishes Manoj's legacy in the public eye." Ratan Chakraborty of Sitarganj said, "If this isn't a name change, why didn't they just retain the new complex name as Manoj Sarkar Sports Complex? Why was it necessary to assign a new identity?" In response to the backlash, sports minister Rekha Arya clarified the govt's stand. "I want to make it clear that no existing names are being changed. The name of Manoj Sarkar Stadium will remain as it is. We have simply grouped multiple facilities under a single complex name to streamline infrastructure for future events," she said.
