CM pledges to revive Delhi women's panel

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday launched a five-day Mahila Maha Jansunwai (public hearing) in Delhi to fast-track resolution of nearly 1,500 pending complaints by women. The event saw participation from Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, who assured 'full administrative support' to the initiative and pledged to reconstitute the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), which has been non-functional for nearly a year. 'All the pending cases will be taken up for immediate action. The entire police and administrative setup will be present here, and continuous hearings will take place. Maximum cases will be resolved, and the affected women will get justice,' CM Gupta said at the event. She called the initiative a 'good beginning' and promised that the Delhi government would act as a collaborator to ensure no woman in the capital faces injustice. The Delhi government, she added, is also taking broader steps to enhance women's safety. These include setting up 11 one-stop centres, installing thousands of CCTV cameras, eliminating dark spots through better lighting and connectivity, opening 500 crèches for working women, and providing ₹2,500 in monthly financial assistance to economically disadvantaged women. Gupta confirmed that the DCW—whose chairperson, member secretary, and three nominated members completed their tenure in July 2023—will be reconstituted soon. 'We have taken cognisance, and the Delhi Commission for Women would be constituted soon so that complaints from women can be heard more effectively,' she said. To be sure, the DCW functions like a civil court and runs several programmes such as sahyogini, mahila panchayats, a rape crisis cell, a mobile helpline, and pre-marital counselling. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar urged women complainants to attend the Jansunwai and raise their grievances directly before authorities. Officials said priority will be given to existing complaints, but walk-in cases will also be addressed on the spot, where possible. According to NCW data, Delhi ranks second after Uttar Pradesh in complaints received this year, with 253 cases of domestic violence topping the list.

Delhi Commission for Women to be revived soon to address concerns of women, says CM Gupta

New Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said the Delhi Commission for Women , which has been inactive for some time, will be revived soon to address the concerns of women in distress, with around 1,500 such cases currently pending. Speaking at the 'Rashtriya Mahila Aayog Aapke Ghar Jan Sunwai' programme, Gupta said women often turn to the government for support, and efforts are underway to ensure timely redressal of their grievances. 'That's why the Delhi Commission for Women will be reactivated and begin functioning again,' she said. The National Commission for Women , under the leadership of its chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, on Monday inaugurated a five-day 'Mahila Maha Jansunwai' at its office in Jasola, aiming to provide doorstep solutions to women's issues. Sharing a recent complaint, Gupta said during a public hearing at her residence, a parent alleged that some boys were harassing their daughters despite a police complaint. 'Such people may continue to make mistakes, but it is our responsibility to take action against them,' she said. To enhance women's safety, the Delhi government will install 50,000 CCTV cameras at dark spots across the city. Gupta explained that these spots are not just poorly lit areas but also those with weak network connectivity. The chief minister also reiterated that support for working women remains a priority, with plans to set up 500 crèche facilities and provide financial assistance of ₹2,500 to eligible beneficiaries. In a post on X, Gupta said, 'Today, I participated in the 'Rashtriya Mahila Aayog Aapke Ghar' Mahila Maha-Jansunwai programme organised in Jasola area of Delhi where a large number of women came and shared their social, legal and personal problems with an open mind.' During the event, the NCW directed concerned officials to take prompt action on all pending cases. Rahatkar said the aim of the special public hearing is to give women a direct platform to voice their issues and be part of the decision-making process. The Delhi government is committed to resolving women's issues, and the police and administration will fully support the Commission during this initiative, Gupta said. Rahatkar added that if a woman is unable to register her complaint at the DCW, the Commission would reach out to her with a solution. 'Our aim is to resolve all pending cases related to women during this hearing and close them,' she said. The NCW also launched its fortnightly magazine Jagriti, which features stories of women achievers, relevant Supreme Court rulings, government initiatives, and other topics of interest.

NCW launches five-day Maha Jansunwai in Delhi; CM Gupta assures swift action in 1500 pending cases

New Delhi, The National Commission for Women on Monday launched a five-day Mahila Maha Jansunwai in Delhi to fast-track the resolution of women's complaints, with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assuring full administrative support to clear a backlog of about 1500 pending cases. Gupta, who was present on the opening day of the special public hearing, said the initiative marks a major step towards ensuring timely justice for women in the capital. "All the pending cases will be taken up for immediate action. The entire police and administrative setup will be present here, and continuous hearings will take place," she said. Gupta further said the government will soon reconstitute the Delhi Commission for Women . "We want women to be heard more effectively, and that requires the DCW to be fully functional as soon as possible," she noted. The Mahila Maha Jansunwai, scheduled for this week, aims to prioritise complaints previously registered with the commission as well as provide on-the-spot resolution for walk-in grievances. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, commission members, and senior officials from various departments are attending the sessions. Calling the initiative a "good beginning," Gupta said it offers hope to countless women who have been waiting for justice. She also underlined the Delhi government's commitment to supporting the commission's efforts. "We will act as collaborators and ensure that no woman in Delhi faces injustice at any level. They will receive complete support from the administration," she said. Rahatkar appealed to all women complainants to participate in the 'Jansunwai' so that they could present their issues directly before the authorities concerned. According to NCW officials, the hearings will give priority to previously submitted complaints, but walk-in cases will also be addressed with equal urgency, with efforts made to resolve them on-the-spot, wherever possible. According to official data, Delhi has the second highest number of complaints registered in NCW after Uttar Pradesh this year, with the highest number of complaints relating to domestic violence at 253.
