Ram Gopal Varma says South industries survived by remaking Amitabh Bachchan films: ‘Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, NT Rama Rao did remakes, became demigods'
Although the film industries in the South seem to be successful curently, while Bollywood struggles to produce hit films, there was a time, particularly the '70s and '80s, when they too were making rip-offs of films from other languages. God forbid a filmmaker came up with a fresh idea in any language, even English, and the film turned out to be successful; their counterparts immediately jumped on it and churned out remakes, making a fortune at the expense of others. As a result, movies with original ideas were a rarity back then. Interestingly, while Bollywood is now often criticised for its fixation on remakes, the Southern film industries too once followed a similar path. Recently, legendary filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) commented on this trend, noting how several South Indian superstars, including Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi, rose to fame by largely remaking films originally headlined by Amitabh Bachchan. RGV said during a chat with IndiaTV Showbiz, 'In the beginning, the entire South, all four languages, were remaking Amitabh Bachchan films. Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, NT Rama Rao and Rajkumar were making remakes of Bachchan's films of the '70s and '80s. Then, in the '90s, Mr Bachchan took a long five-year break. At the same time, coincidentally, the music companies entered the scene. They made films just to sell their music. That's when movies like Maine Pyar Kiya came out. But the South never stopped making the so-called masala films, which they picked up from Bachchan. That's how those stars became big demigods. It continues to date.' Meanwhile, he said, the then-young Bollywood directors began gaining more exposure to foreign cinema, largely due to their knowledge of English and their upbringing in urban areas. 'If you observe, most commercial directors in the South are very less exposed to cinema. They can't talk about cinema like we do. They're very close to the ground root,' RGV added. RGV further went on to recall the reaction of a producer, whom he did not wish to name, to director Sukumar's Pushpa: The Rise, starring Allu Arjun in the titular role. 'Upon seeing the movie about three or four days before the release of the movie, he said the audience would puke on Pushpa. He was not referring to the actor. He was simply turned off by the character. They are so used to good-looking six-pack heroes on staple diets that they can't comprehend a hero chewing paan at all. They are not watching the film; they are watching the film as what they perceive the audience would watch,' he pointed out.

Aamir Khan talks about Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan not getting credit as much as him, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan: ' Everyone have given hits...'
Aamir Khan, in a recent interview, humbly downplayed the 'top three Khans' label, advocating for wider recognition of Bollywood stars. He emphasized that actors like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, and Hrithik Roshan, who debuted around the same time, have made equally significant contributions to the industry with decades of hard work and numerous hits. Actor Aamir Khan recently addressed the much-talked-about 'top three Khans' label—often used to group him with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan . In a candid chat with Raj Shamani, Aamir humbly pushed back against the tag, saying stars like Akshay Kumar , Ajay Devgn , and Hrithik Roshan also deserve just as much recognition in Bollywood's top tier. Aamir Khan expressed that while he appreciates being mentioned alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, he finds it unfair that other long-standing stars like Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Hrithik Roshan are often left out of the conversation. He shared that it genuinely bothers him when the contributions of these equally hardworking actors are overlooked. Aamir emphasized that credit should be shared among all actors who began their careers in the late 1980s. He pointed out that the generation of actors from that era isn't limited to just Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and himself. Many others have been working for 30 to 35 years, which is no small feat. He highlighted that all of them have delivered major hits and achieved significant success, and he wanted to set the record straight about their contributions. When asked why they are often called the top three Khans, Aamir suggested it might be because their films broke box office records or performed exceptionally well commercially. He made his lead acting debut with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) alongside Juhi Chawla , while Salman Khan's Hindi film debut came with Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) opposite Bhagyashree. Akshay Kumar made his Bollywood debut in 1991 with Saugandh, starring opposite Raakhee and Shantipriya. Ajay Devgn also entered the Hindi film industry that year with Phool Aur Kaante, alongside Madhoo and Aruna Irani. Shah Rukh Khan followed shortly after, debuting in 1992 with the musical romance Deewana opposite Divya Bharti . Aamir Khan Feels Ajay, Akshay, Hrithik Deserve Equal Credit As Khans: ‘Taqleef Deti...'
Last Updated: Aamir Khan said that while he, Shah Rukh, Salman are called 'top three Khans,' actors like Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, and Akshay Kumar have also been in the industry just as long. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently responded to a question about being one of the 'top three Khans' in the film industry, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, by raising his objection with the label. In an interview with Raj Shamani, Aamir said that actors like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, and Hrithik Roshan have also been in the industry for the same number of years and have delivered multiple hits, and that they deserve equal credit for their contributions. Aamir Khan said it upsets him when people only take his, Shah Rukh and Salman's names. While he has no problem with the tag, he feels bad that actors like Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, who have been in the industry for just as long, don't get equal credit. 'Mujhe jo cheeze taqleef deti hai ki log Shah Rukh, Salman aur mera naam lete hai. Hum teeno ka naam lete hai, acchi baat hai, galat baat nahi hai. Lekin mujhe bura lagta hai ki humare saath saath Ajay Devgn bhi itne hi saal chale hai, Akshay Kumar bhi itne hi saal chale hai, Hrithik bhi itne hi saal chale hai (What hurts me is that people take my, Shah Rukh, Salman's names. They take our names, it's good, it isn't wrong. But what I feel bad that along with us, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Hrithik Roshan were also there)," he said. Aamir further stated that they all started working in films in the 1980s, and deserve due credit. He explained that their generation includes many successful actors who have been consistently working for 30-35 years and have delivered numerous hits. 'Woh generation sirf Salman, Shah Rukh aur main nahi. Hum mein se kayi log hai jo 30-35 saal se kaam kar rahe hain, jo normal nahi hai. Sabne badi hits di aur sab bohut kamyaab hai. Toh main yeh correct karna chahta hu. (That generation isn't just Salman, Shah Rukh and me. There are many of us who worked for 30-35 years, it's not normal. Everyone has given hits and all of them are successful. So I want to correct it)," he added. When asked why their names are considered as the 'top three Khans', Aamir suggested that it might be due to their films breaking box office records or performing well commercially. Aamir debuted as a lead actor in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) with Juhi Chawla, while Salman debuted in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) with Bhagyashree. Akshay's first Bollywood film was Saugandh (1991) with Raakhee and Shantipriya. Ajay debuted in Phool Aur Kaante (1991) with Madhoo and Aruna Irani. Shah Rukh made his debut in the musical romance Deewana (1991) with Divya Bharti. Meanwhile, Aamir is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. Directed by R. S. Prasanna, the film will be released in theatres on 20th June, 2025.

Aamir Khan says he used to compete with Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan in the '90s, but not any longer: ‘It was always healthy at my end'
The three Khans — Aamir, Shah Rukh, and Salman — started their careers around the same time, which is why they're always pitted against each other. But Aamir Khan, the most experienced of the three, maintains that they no longer compete with each other. He claimed the competition was always healthy, at least from his end. 'At one time, we used to compete, in the '90s, on who's more successful. Every person feels they should be most successful and appreciated, and that's a good thing. From my side, I never indulged in any negativity. I just can't get myself to. From my end, the competition has always been healthy,' said Aamir on Raj Shamani's podcast. He continued, 'If someone does good work, I feel like I should do too. I get inspired by others' work. But their success only makes me happier. We've been in the industry for 30-35 years, not just me, Shah Rukh, and Salman, but all other actors and actresses. There's a lot of warmth and respect between us. I wasn't competing with anyone actually. I only competed with myself.' Aamir Khan quoted the example of Aditya Chopra's 1995 blockbuster romantic drama Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, starring Shah Rukh and Kajol. 'I never thought I should make a big romantic film like that because I love watching it. Shah Rukh has done great work in it. So I'm not competing with him,' added Aamir. Shah Rukh, who was planning to buy the latest laptop then, also got another one for Aamir. However, being technologically handicapped, Aamir never ended up using it. 'My manager asked me four years later if he can use my laptop for work. I forgot about the laptop. When he showed it to me, I realized I haven't used it. Then I asked my manager to use it instead. You won't believe it just didn't switch on because it was just lying there for four years (laughs),' Aamir said. Aamir also confessed he feels hurt by the fact that only the three Khans are celebrated, instead of their other contemporaries who also enjoy the same longevity in the film industry. 'I feel bad because Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Hrithik Roshan, and a host of others from our generation who have worked for 30-35 years and are very successful. So I want to correct that,' Aamir reasoned. While Aamir Khan made his debut as an adult actor with Ketan Mehta's Holi in 1984, he became a regular actor only with Mansoor Khan's 1988 blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Salman Khan made his acting debut with Biwi Ho Toh Aisi (1988), but played the lead for the first time in Sooraj Barjatya's 1989 hit directorial debut Maine Pyar Kiya. Shah Rukh Khan became a TV actor with Fauji in 1988, and made his Bollywood debut with Raj Kanwar's Deewana in 1992. Ajay Devgn entered the industry a year earlier with Kuku Kohli's 1991 blockbuster Phool Aur Kaante. Akshay Kumar, who had a brief appearance in Mahesh Bhatt's Aaj in 1987, made his debut as a lead in Raj Sippy's 1991 action romance Saugandh. Meanwhile, Hrithik Roshan, 51, the youngest of them all, made his debut as a child actor in J Om Prakash's 1986 action film Bhagwaan Dada. After working as an assistant director on four of his father Rakesh Roshan's directorials for a decade, he made his debut as a lead in Rakesh' 2000 blockbuster romance Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai.
